Let's get a general going. What are you drinking today, /ck/? It was hot as balls today, so I got some wheat beers to unwind with.
>>
>>7745392
Wheat beers are the shit, what's your opinion on Hoegaarden?
>>
>>7745411
>it ain't drinkable starts playing

I'm sorry, I don't drink horsepiss 'enpai
>>
>>7745392
I got a variety 12 pack of New Belgium and it's not bad for $13. I had 2 Lagunitas Sucks left over in the fridge. I've been drunk for the past 30 hours.

Another excellent beer from surly. Similar to abrasive but way more crushable. This brewery kills it on the regular

Only problem is the price point (like abrasive as well) but it was worth trying
>>
Surprised to see my local Vons carrying Oskar Blues but got a pack of Pinner and a 22oz of 805 and a 22oz of a Marshmellow milk stout from Garage Brewing. Also got some Luponic Distortion and Easy Jack in my fridge. How's everyones day?
>>
>>7745503

Gotta work tomorrow but i have a few bottles of lunch by maine beer waiting in the fridge for me so its all good>>7745503
>>
>>7745411
Haven't tried anything by them before. Always down to try a new wheat beer though. What would you recommend from their line?
>>
>>7745503
Going good man. Think my amber ale finally hit fg today, so I should be good to bottle in on sunday. Had some stouts conditioning for a few weeks, so they should be almost ready.
>>
>>7745546
>amber ale
nice m8. I've been itching to brew something. Especially since its been hot. I was thinking a saison or an IPA. What hops did you use?
>>
>>7745535

its basically just hoegaarden regular...i don't know anything else they make.

my preferred wheat beers are hacker pschorr or weiheinstephaner though. weihenstephaner hefeweiss is the absolute top tier wheat beer
>>
>>7745568
Do the saison dude, that's gonna be my next brew. I used cascade for the amber ale. It's nothing fancy, just a basic brew from a kit I've had sitting around for a while.
>>
>>7745586
how many barrels on your system?
>>
>>7745577
>weihenstephaner hefeweiss
I'll be looking for this on my next beer run. Thanks man!
>>
>>7745594
No barrels atm. My set up is pretty basic man. Really just got into brewing. I use a 5 gallon fermenter for my primary, and rack straight to the bottles.
>>
>>7745610
you using extract or grain?
>>
>>7745625
Extract brews so far, but I want to go all grain for my next batch. Thinking biab will be the best way to ease into it.

Tried that last week. Seriously good stuff man.
>>
>>7745632
>I want to go all grain for my next batch.

It's not as much of a pain in the ass as it may have sounded at first, anon.

Just download a good brewing program, input your data, and it'll hook you up with all the info you need to make a great brew.
>>
>>7745392

I'm drinking Weihenstephaner's Pilsner along with the few Narragansett's I have left.

I don't know what else to talk about. I like Weihenstephaner for what it is despite it being imported. What's the general opinion of Weihenstephaner here?
>>
>>7745653
I'm sure it's not bad. Been using beersmith for my first few brews, so I feel comfortable with the software. I'll definitely give it a go come next brew day.
>>
>>7745632
BIAB? ive never heard of that method. I use a 10 gallon barrel for the boil and 10 gallon cooler for mash. Pretty easy set up.

what >>7745653 said. Check out BeerSmith2 been using it for a while now.
>>
>>7745657

i've only had the hefe and the dunkel, both are excellent
>>
Im so happy. One of my favorite beers, Prima Pils is now being sold as a 12 pack. Now I dont have to feel like an alcoholic every time I buy some.

I actually saw that in the store too next to the sriracha one.

>>
>>7745811
It's not bad, one of the better chocolate stouts I've tried. Malt comes through with pretty strong roasted coffee, and you kind of get hit with the chocolate right after.
>>
>>7745822
Currently my favorite chocolate stout is the one from Samuel Smith

I can definitely recommend that one
>>

>>
>>7745843
It's a curse.
It's probably because I'm from a place where the only way of getting craft beer is ordering it online, which is really fucking expensive and not worth it, so i tricked myself into liking piss.

First time i had an chance to get them at all so i felt compelled to buy two bottles, the coffee one i had tonight and a Elijah Craig 12yo that will probably sit in the cellar for a awhile just to forget what i payed for it.

Washed the bad feelings of overpaying away with some homebrewed New England style IPA. Soon 3 weeks in the keg and this sample was the one yet so it does keep improving for awhile for sure!
>>
Last night I drank some beers and felt awful. I had some pilsners and some IPAs. Could it have anything to do with mixing these two types of beers? Or did I just get unlucky?
>>
>>7747724
What should I do before I start drinking again? Same thing happened to me, but not in a car. I'm all shaky and sweaty and feel very anxious. Worried I won't keep it down if I drink so soon.
>>
>>7747752
Vomiting always makes me feel better. I'm actually not even that hungover, just a lightweight and didn't have dinner last night.

Try and drink water, your body needs hydration, if you throw it up then wait a bit. Your feelings of anxiousness probably come from still being drunk and not getting good sleep. If you feel like shit, get a wet-towel on the forehead, or take a shower if you're capable. It will pass with time, watch a movie, smoke some weed, just rest.
>>
>>7747752
>>7747764
I also had a sandwich from the store I vomited outside of. Food will make it easier to digest whatever leftover alchy is still in the system.

>>
>>7747805
Not alot of stuff i have tried that use Nelson. I had a bag of slightly older hops of that variant once. The beer i made with it got screwed up in all sorts of ways sadly though so it was an mess.

Nelson and Galaxy is an combo i have read should work good.

Some lagunitas are very mediocre for me. But it was also one of my entry beers that led me into craft years ago so ill always have a soft spot for them.

Just had this the other day. Lucky to buy an original print too.
>>
>>7745657
First of all: I've never had it fresh in Germany so I'm only able to review what has been standing a while on the shelves here in Finland. And in my very humble opinion they're hit and miss.

I expected more from their hefe. It was true to the style but a bit insipid. Their Pilsner was very discreet (but that's how German pilsners come across to me so yet again it seemed to be true to the style).
Their weizenbock Vitus was absolutely great though. One of the best wheat beers I've ever had. Highly recommended.
>>
>>7747883
Always liked Mikkeller. They have made some awesome beers, lately though i have started to pick up some problems with beers produced by de proef. Not just Mikkellers stuff made there but also other breweries contracted beers, i shy away from most stuff made by that contractor theses days.
Sad as i know they made great stuff for alot of phantom brewers earlier.

Best Mikkeller i ever had was the Vanilla Shake! Insane stout!

I've had it. It's not terrible. It taste like an average stout and finishes a little spicy. The spiciness doesn't linger like hot sauce and that was kinda weird. It would make a pretty dank red beer, I think. It's like 20 bucks a bottle so it isn't worth the price.

Perhaps Sour is the word I was looking for. Regardless, this is my preference for Gose, but I still buy the Otra Vez often.
>>
>>7752638
They shouldn't be sour either. Salty/slight tart is what a gose should go for, with a nice straw/wheat like finish. Obviously the fruit addition will change it, but that's at least what I look for in a gose. If I want sour I'll get a sour.

Then I have clearly been drinking Bastard-Gose ales. I'll have to seek out some unflavored, or just non-fruity ones.

They have a more unflavored one, it definitely has the salt and tart going for it (pic related). The Blood Orange one is fucking delicious and refreshing, and I still highly recommend it, though.

Yeah the fruit ones are a little more tart and acidic. Regular ones are more of that saltiness that I personally love.

10/10 duck dodgers there

I'm having incarnation by 4 hands. It's pretty good. Not too sweet, shop it has more of that astringent quality I like in an ipa. I like making my green tea with too many leaves and will even nibble at the softened leaves and stems, so this kind of beer speaks to me.

Recently had dogfish head 120 minute as well. Now that was good. Just like my super flavored green tea concoctions, this had a great plant flavor that was edging on floral. The alcohol was prominent. It was quite sweet though, so it was easy to drink, dangerously so. The perfect beer after a day of geology field work.

If it's not tired it's very hop forward for a Belgian ale in tandem with the usual yeastiness. A good strong taste intensity. Flowery vegetativeness that transitions into lemon and orange peels vegetables and spices. A doughy good yeastiness comes last. Buy a big bottle and let yourself float away. But beware you need to like IPAs at least to some extent otherwise it probably won't be your cup of tea.

Guinness pours in quite a special way because of the nitro widget (the ball inside the can). Buy an ordinary carbonic acid beer next and it will behave much differently.

Well things can evolve. Do you think Chinese food in China today is the same as it was 200 years ago? Or german beer today is the same as it was then?

The fact is, modern German beer is in a pretty sorry state while American beer is booming. this is probably directly related to the fact that in the previous generation German beer was just barely ok enough to not inspire people to make it better while American beer was fucking bad

The average beer in germany is better and cheaper than the average beer in the US. Same goes for Czech, Poland and many other countries in europe. While in the US "small" breweries might be something hip and fresh, in the listed countries literally every second shitty village has a brewery doing "craft" beer since ages. While innovation can be good, no normal person will pay 5 times the cost for half size the bottle of a ,at worst, shitty hipster beer, at best, a slightly different version of a beer you already know and like
>>
>>7768905
>The average beer in germany is better and cheaper than the average beer in the US
How cheap is beer in geramn?

Also, the average beer? What does that mean? The average american has access to much better beer than people in any other country do
>in the listed countries literally every second shitty village has a brewery doing "craft" beer since ages
This is a ridiculous claim. making one mediocre pale lager doesn't make you on par with even the lesser of american craft brewers
>>
>>7768905
How much do you think craft beer costs?
>>
>>7768914
>Also, the average beer? What does that mean?

I'm not the guy you're replying to, but I'm guessing he's referring to the big name macrobrews. The best-selling beers in each country. Bud light in USA, Kingfisher in India, Asahi in Japan, Corona in Mexico, etc.
>>
>>7768914
>How cheap is beer in geramn?
around 80 Cent for the good ones per 0.5l bottle
>Also, the average beer? What does that mean?
referring to the major breweries and to the locally popular brands
>The average american has access to much better beer than people in any other country do
>This is a ridiculous claim. making one mediocre pale lager doesn't make you on par with even the lesser of american craft brewers
You are kinda lost americunt, you just discovered beer and think the more different beers the better, it is ridiculous to think america has the best beers, this isnt even an opinion. Its like saying you get the best coffee in america just because you have most baristas and most hipsters hipstering out over brewing methods and types of beans
>>
>>7768959
>around 80 Cent for the good ones per 0.5l bottle
American macro beer is even cheaper, and the good stuff is in the same range

You seem to have just no idea what is available elsewhere. America has more and better beer. You can buy all the beer that makes up Germany's best, plus many other styles, including styles that almost anyone would consider tastier.
Don't believe the meme that craft beer is just IPA and sriracha beer, you must just spend too much time here.
>>
>>7768959
>it is ridiculous to think america has the best beers
Pretty much fucking everyone believes this though. There really is no contest. Belgium might have it on a per capita basis, but almost all of the world's most acclaimed beer is american.

I've got a sour peach/apricot weiss I bottled about a month ago... I didn't even hit it with any whirfloc (in hindsight, a mistake), so it's almost opaque. The peach and sour are subdued, which is kind of nice, plays well with the effervescence (overcarbonated... also a mistake in hindsight - they need to be opened slowly).

Next time - whirfloc, a bit longer on the souring, more/riper peach and apricot, less sugar in the bottling

Agree. I picked up a six pack of the Watermelon Dorado and I don't know if I can even finish it. Super disappointing because the Grapefruit Sculpin is great. Pic related is a good watermelon beer.

What do you mean by per capita?

Just having a lot of IPAs with different names doesn't really mean much when
1. They all taste the same and
2. Most of them are just some fat guy with a beer kit

inb4 if you don't have the same opinion as me you are a member of ISIS
>>
>>7769176
They make good stuff. Belgian ipa is great.
>>7769215
Only melon beer ive liked
>>7769267
Just glance through any thread. The US pumps out all styles and does them great.
>>
>>7769273
All styles of course, but the overwhelming majority of beers at a bar or store are pale ales, and most of those are in turn IPAs

What you mean I guess is that you count every distinct beer label that technically exists, and divide by citizens? This is per capita?

It's like pretending we have a lot of Italian sports cars on our roads, because the Camry is one car and like, an Isotta T8 was imported once by a guy in Texas and that counts equally as the Camry
>>
>>7769267
I mean Belgium is a tiny country, so if you take the total number of great beers per person they quite possibly win, but on an absolute scale America fucking dominates

Please keep in mind though that the /ck/ meme about IPA isn't actually true, most craft beer is not IPA, the variety of top tier beer available in America is staggering. You can go to a shitty super market and usually be able to chose from many top tier beers of any kind of style from IPA, to stout to sours, even pale lagers and other lesser forms of beer

Have you never even been in America? IPA/APA is only about 1/3 of craft beer, its never tough to find stuff of other styles

Well, as you can see I have an opinion that doesn't match perfectly with yours, therefore logically it follows that not only have I never set foot here, but I also am working actively to destroy America and all that she stands for.
>>
>>7769323
Oh let's see if I can inb4 are you in the south
>>
>>7769323
>n see I have an opinion
Its not an opinion. the majority of American craft beer is factually not IPA
You are just saying incorrect things, this has nothing to do with opinions
>>
>>7769340
>the majority
As with your per capita comments, I wonder what this means

You're too busy "defending" America's honor against the boogyman to have a rational and candid discussion about beer. Where you and I differ is that I don't feel that America needs defending - it's not under attack, and if it was, it's just words.

So can you explain your reasoning without talking to me like America's going to get handed over to the al Nusra front if you "concede" anything that you think counts as something less than breathless praise for America and hysterical rage towards Europeans?
>>
>>7769351
Per capita and majority are not obscure or ambiguous words. They are not up for interpretation

I am just correcting you when you make factually incorrect statements. Its nothing do to with defending America, were you to sincerely make similar incorrect statements on anything else I am informed about I would likewise correct you
>>

Might be one of the best stouts there is, IMO.

I dunno wtf you two are even arguing about at this point other than semantics, but the 1/3 IPA/APA comment seems about right to me based of the 3 dispensaries I frequent (I'm in New England). No other style comes to that large of a percentage though. Stouts/porters are probably up there though. The rest is well diversified.

I ignore most IPA's anyway. I have a select few I think are nice and get once in a while, like Schafly's TIPA, AleSmith's, and Bell's and a few others. The rest kinda suck.

Tried pic related and a Sierra Nevada Otra Vez tonight. Both were nice, though the stout was a bit too sweet - which seems to be common with Southern Tiers Imperial Stouts.
>>
>>7769405
I think the important part to note is that its very easy to find beer of all sorts of diverse styles, no matter how much the meme guy wants to insist America only has IPA

Are you sure you want to go with that?

Let's see:
>196 million barrels per year
>16 million are "muh craft beer"
>the majority of American beer is or resembles bud light
This just isn't looking favorable, you just handed our freedom to ISIS you terrorist

Or, do you want to reconsider whether those terms were used in a clear, specific, unambiguous way?
>>
>>7769453
per capita - literally by the head... per person.

majority - most... 51% or more.

>bud light
not an IPA by any stretch. See: American Pilsner.

Flying Dog is fucking fantastic and I hate that I can't find it or Boulevard here in TN anymore
I had pic related earlier and it was quite good. I'm new to sours. Tart and somewhat juicy/cherry-ish flavor.
Gonna finish tonight with a homebrew 7.2% Dunkelweizen
>>
>>7769453
What?
You claimed the majority was IPA, I said it wasn't. I was factually accurate, you were not
>>
>>7769305
My most legitimate complaint about IPAs is that when I go to a my regular grocery store (Food City, Kroger) there's 10 to 12 or more fucking IPAs and pale ales and never a good selection of wheats/porter/darker stuff or other less popular styles. This is mostly due to my state's shit distribution, but I really only crave an IPA maybe 1 out of every 10 beers I buy.
>>
>>7769443
Make sure you only get a single bottle, that's what I did. It's full of memes, but honestly not terrible. It does actually taste/smell quite a bit like chocolate/caramel.

ST Imperial Stout's have this weird artificial sweetness that's a bit too much too them. Not as bad in this one, but made their Choklat Oranj god awful. They also tend to be overpriced. I'd take a Old Raspy or Yeti over them any day.

>>7769453
Why are you bringing up Bud Light and macro shit when your two's argument is about craft beer tho.
>>
>>7769493
>and never a good selection of wheats/porter/darker stuff
I've literally never encountered such a situation, sure there are more IPA than any other single style but so many styles are so well represented

You said "per capita USA has better beer than anywhere else". I asked you what per capita meant and you said "literally per head" I just showed you that, by a naïve reading of your argument, the opposite is true.

Same goes for "majority" - clearly much more than 51% is shit

Then you started b-b-but I meant!

So, what did you mean?

You're really not very good at articulating your point of view. You say everything like it's plain as day, even though it's not. And when someone asks questions they must not be AMERICA because AMERICA doesn't ask questions we just have correct opinions from the womb

I like Flying Dog a lot.. I've had that one and a few others that has been imported to Finland over the years. I often wonder why they are mentioned so rarely in these kinds of threads. Don't have a pic from when I drank it yesterday but I tried Scotch Silly with a friend. Impulse buy when I saw it was a scotch ale made in Belgium.

Really sweet and fruity thanks to Belgian yeast. It drank more like a sweeter barley wine than a scotch ale. It was pretty nice stuff.

Received a case of this at my store and the box said it was brewed 3 days ago. Couldn't resist getting a bottle.
