Also, washing mushrooms ruins them as an ingredient. The worst you should ever abuse them is a gentle wiping with a damp towel, as they absorb water very easily.

I just give them a quick rinse under the tap and rub them to get rid of any growing medium.

I think the absorbing water thing is a myth.

they're not sponges and most of the time you're cooking them to draw out the water anyways.

I work in restaurants and the only time Ive ever washed mushrooms, it was some button mushrooms, they tend to get pretty dirty and we needed a shit ton. Otherwise you either wipe it clean or its not dirty at all.

i usually rinse then wipe and i've never had an issue

I just run them under the tap for a couple seconds.

Don't know if it helps anything but I've been doing it for years.

Thise store bought shit button mushrooms can be rinsed with water, wild mushrooms should be cleaned with something like a brush, rinsing them makes them lose a lot of flavor.

Last time I got food poisoning was from those pre stuffed mini Bella's from the fresh market that you just throw in the oven. I don't know if it was from the mushrooms or other ingredient though
