I don't live in the US, so when I hear "a fifth" I always think it means 20% of a full bottle.

I found out it's actually about the quantity in a full bottle of spirits long ago, but it still takes a moment to parse correctly.

It has nothing to do with being a lightweight or not; downing that much in that short of a period of time is just asking for trouble regardless of your tolerance.

That's how I feel about the time I drank three bottles of night train back to back out of a beer bong.

Also the time I bought a bottle of the cheapest vodka I could find. It smelled and tasted like rubbing alcohol but I drank the whole thing anyway.

Half a fifth is around 8 shots.

I drink more than double that almost every night, but that other guy was talking about doing 8 shots in 10 minutes.

Anyone *can* do it, but I'd probably be throwing up soon after, and I haven't thrown up from drinking in close to 20 years. The fact that OP thought it was worth starting a thread about means that he is not used to drinking that much.
