I made split pea soup according to a recipe a fellow co/ck/ shared. It came out wonderful. Great taste, the ham falling off the hock. It was delightful. I don't know if anon is around, but thank you.
Sweet blog
Here is the recipe. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to try.

Can this be made without ham, or any pork product? I suppose not.

Anything you want to add?

You can make it without pork but it won't quite taste the same since the ham hocks add a nice meaty, smoky flavor. Maybe try using a smoked turkey leg or something like that? I've never done it personally but I'm sure it would be reasonably good for adding that smoky flavor.

Soak your split peas overnight.
I made the mistake of not doing so, and it took about 7 hours simmering for them to finally break up into mush. I was actually cooking for my dad since he was coming into town to visit, and the soup simply would not be ready so we had to get lunch elsewhere. But it's fantastic now.
