I personally never get a really good night's rest with diphenhydramine. Always get restless halfway through the night and groggy in the morning.

A good dose of melatonin does the trick. You don't get forced to sleep, but when you lie down, you aren't just wide awake for an hour.

Ah yes, this will happen if you dont fall asleep right away. It's best with booze though, after a few beers....couple drylskies, its very nice
