Soba.
Just buy some soba, boil for 4-6 minutes, then rinse with ice cold water.
That's it. Serve it cold.
Eat with a dipping sauce (mentsuyu) which you can make yourself. Top the soba with a bit of shredded nori and minced green onions.
Done.
It's pretty simple, both in preparation and taste. But my god it keeps me coming back.

Miso soup is really fucking easy. Dashi powder, miso paste, tofu, kelp, green onions, water. Add dashi powder to hot water, then mix in miso slowly, add tofu, add kelp and green onions last, serve. Don't boil it, just let it simmer. Usually dashi packets make about 4 cups, use about 1 tablespoon of miso per cup.

Buy short grain, buy a rice cooker with a locking lid that cost atleast 100 dollars. There will be some Alton Brown dick suckers complaining about unitaskers, but rice cookers actually do cook rice better than a pot.
Rinse your rice until the water is clear and it'll be the same
>>7278551
Why don't you get an actual steam rice cooker and korean/japanese rice instead of relying on minute rice all the time?
Really, minute rice is disgusting.
>>7278551
the most important part of good rice is the rice itself
buy some good short grain rice, calrose should be available plenty in the us
rice cookers are very convenient, especially if you cook rice at least 3 times a week but not necessary. you can make great rice in a pot but it will most likely stick to the pot
anyway take the rice and rinse it under cold water until the starch is gone and the water is more or less clear
then take an amount of water about equal to the rice (I use a tiny bit more, think 100g rice to 110ml water or so), put it in the pot with the rice and let it soak for half an hour
then turn the heat up to full and observe it until the water just starts to boil, then turn the heat to the lowest and let it finish itself without touching the lid. if you time it right you shouldn't need to open the lid
when all the water is gone the rice should be finished.

First, thanks guys, most of these pics are cool as hell.
Could anyone tell me how to eat half of the things that I'm staring at? Like a block of tofu, do you just pick it up with your fingers and take bites of it? Do you just dump the veggies in the noodles and eat the whole thing as one? Or do you take tiny little bites of each thing with chopsticks?
I assume one just drinks the soups from the bowl, but some of these have got to be sauces.
If I ever manage to travel through Japan I'm 100% certain that people will stop to watch me eat and take pictures of the event (me, a large hairy barbarian type guy eating fancy Japanese cuisine like a drunken toddler).
Is there any hope that I could go eat at restaurants in Japan and not look like some kind of weird monster?

Chopsticks are customary for the tofu and most solid foods.
You can mix the dishes but most are meant to be eaten separately.
Some foods can be eaten with your fingers, i.e. nigiri sushi.
They use spoons for liquids like everyone else, although drinking soup from the bowl is not as frowned on as in other countries.
Most places that serve Western food will have forks and knives.
People are going to look at a large foreigner anyway, in tourist heavy areas people won't really care.
There are Japanese etiquette guides online, perhaps you could benefit from one of those.
>>7280563
People say that you can eat nigiri sushi with your hands, I ask Japanese people and they say its ok But literally no one ever does
>>7280596
They're just used to using chopsticks for everything. It's not like it's forbidden to use hands for nigiri.
>>7280303
It's probably a raw egg, and the bowl is to crack it into, so it can be used as a dipping sauce.

>how is Japanese food even remotely bland? Have you ever watched cooking with dog?
Anon might have been responding to some of the pictures posted in this thread. Some dishes did look bland. Unless Japan devised a tomato devoid of color or other Western tell-tale signs of ripeness and flavor, the tomatoes in the earlier part of the thread look abominable, like Subway-quality bad. And bare iceberg lettuce doesn't add zing to a dish either. (See:
>>7252547
>>7252513 )
Big hunks of tofu or a mound of bare cabbage like in OP's photo look tedious too, though perhaps the things on top of them are more flavorful than they appear, or you're supposed to mix things from the various dishes together or something. I'm not suggesting all Japanese food is bland, not by a longshot, but it seems like there's no shortage of bland dishes (or "subtly flavored" if you want to be a foodie about it) either.
>>7285562
looks like tomato sauce to me but I'm sure they often put ketchup on it instead
