Is there a reliable way to get decent food reviews?

Yelp extorts money out of businesses to get higher ratings, not to mention it is full of plebs who have no concept of value
Is Zagat still a thing? Doesn't matter because they aren't in my city
Are Google reviews any good?
The local paper keeps touting old establishments even though they almost all suck now or are too expensive
My friends would rather eat at Taco Bell than anywhere else so I don't have good word of mouth.

How do you guys find new restaurants to check out?

Pic related I want to go to Flavortown
>>
If you don't mind waiting forever, Michelin Tires periodically releases travel guides to great cities. These guides include recommendations to various local restaurants by price and quality of dining, and they are quite strict at the highest echelons.

Unfortunately, these travel guides are rather slow to release, so only major cities have them at this time.

Google or Trip Advisor.

Google reviews tend to be more...sane? And relevant to what you actually want to know about a restaurant.

And they have common sense about service at 6:30pm on Friday night vs 5pm on a Tuesday, so the ratings aren't as skewed.

how do you think google compares to yelp?

Find a critic whose opinions more or less line up with your own, then read them on a regular basis. That's what worked for me. Fortunately this guy lives in the same city as me.

good meme
>>
>>7210058
I think this is best but my city is only like 250k people so while it is big enough to support a lot of restaurants it's not big enough to support multiple full time food writers
>>
>>7210059
Non-meme. The Michelin Travel guides have been providing high-end guidance to destination-level restaurants for years.

In fact, their awards to the best destination restaurants (the Michelin stars) are highly sought after in the restaurant world.

Not to mention, it mostly covers Europe. The states has a very small amount of restaurants in the guide, and there's like 1 in Canada.

I live in Jacksonville, the largest city in Florida. There are over 800 thousand people here and we dont have a Zagat either

Fuck off back to your hugbox, you spastic.

This is a pretty good idea. Some people do do it for free, after all

True, and while many are likely to be no more knowledgeable than the average yelper you may strike gold and find a couple worth reading.
>>

It isn't perfect, but it's a lot better. Less bitchy middle aged cougars that leave reviews only when pissed off.

Ah, you've never been to Florida.

I'm not from Jacksonville, nor have I ever lived in Florida. But I've been to the state plenty of times for business and recreation. Only one of those trips ever was to Disney world.

>how do you find good restaurants?
here's a novel idea op, you could actually try places and decide for yourself
>>
>>7210142
Lol European I'm guessing?

I have been to the panhandle alone for vacation and wonderful food plenty of times. Pensacola and Destin alone have top notch restaurants.
>>
>>7210184
>actually try places and decide for yourself
Except that OP mentions that his friends would rather eat at Taco Bell. From this we can guess OP is young, not particularly wealthy and doesn't have a steady dining companion in the form of a wife/steady gf. It makes perfect sense that someone in that position would be looking for a way to filter out restaurants that would be a waste of his time and money, while finding out about good new places. That's a legit desire.
>>
>>7210142
Jacksonville is as large as Palermo, Genoa, or Dresden
>>
>>7210241
Zagat preferentially targets travel destinations, that doesn't make a place insignificant if it doesn't have one. Venice has one and it is only 250k people, Zagat is targeted to out of towners who don't know what the fuck is going on and eat all their meals out. Don't be obtuse
>>
>>7210302
It is most profitable in tourist destinations, that doesn't mean they are writing the reviews ya dingus
>>
>>7210351
Is that why all the international reviews are written in English? To appeal to locals???
>>
>>7210035
Have you tried Dojo, OP? I used it a few times and it's pretty decent, not as bad as Yelp at least.
>>
>>7210365
no I dont know what that is. Is it an app or something?
