How well do these things actually work? My oven is currently broken and my parents are coming over on Christmas. Is it worth the 40-50 bucks?

I did not find the one I got for my cabin the least bit satisfying. No ability to brown anything, and whatever I cooked in it came out tasting like whatever the thing is coated with - a weird chemical taste way worse than what you get with cheap nonstick cookware.
Can't recommend these things.

Did you get upset when the encyclopedias you bought failed to make you any smarter too?

i was given a couple for thanksgiving this year. We cooked a turkey in one and the other turkey was done in the oven. The one in the oven was better, but they're not a bad substitute if you don't have an oven. I never had any issues like >>7184184
Also, my ex's mom used to use one all the time. It worked reasonably well for her.

did you clean it before using?

Of course I cleaned it. The smell seems to come from whatever material the metal is coated with heating up. Like I said, it stinks worse than a cheap nonstick pan.
