Milky Ange is great sure but some of the Bodyline maid costumes are genuinely decent. What I like to do with them is make minor alterations which give them a higher end look, such as adding little bows (or removing existing ones and replacing with high quality ones) and adding piping details etc.

costume655 is amazing for the money (just get rid of the terrible center bow, as is costume452 and pic related.

What would be a good occasion to wear one of these? Besides other uses, I was thinking of popping one on and doing a Touhru from maid dragon but I'm not sure if it's better to just buy a custom costume.

I own one from bodyline (and it's pretty safe to say that some Japanese maid cafes use them too) and it's decent. The lace is horrible, but easily to remove.

In the end, a maiddress is even more of a costume than eg a school uniform, so even if you spend like 100+$ on it for a normy (and everyone else as well) it'll look like a costume. So unless you need it for work or some really serious cosplay whatever idk get the ones from bodyline. The quality x price is just perfect and they come in various sizes. Just don't get the obviously most cheap looking dress and you'll be fine. They even have space for a decent amount of petticoats underneath

Honestly, aside from some particularly rare scenarios/specific outfits most maid outfits look like costumes any way.

The reason to go with a shop like Bodyline or Milky Ange is for the quality, at least both you have enough people who own stuff from both shops to tell you what to look for and what to avoid. A random costume maker from China with stolen photos may send you any kind of quality at all, from shiny satin things that look bad to stuff that looks good but falls apart as soon as you wash it.

I have this one along with 5 other of Candyfruit costumes. It's velvet so you'll need to put something over it in storage to keep due away.

You'll be spending 250+ for pretty much all there stuff (I say plus because buying the shoes, aprons and such are extra).Their quality is great and their lace is gorgeous. They do commissions as well.
They have pretty much every style but I personally wouldn't go to them for the long maid costumes, Milky Ange is a better option.

Bodyline is like the japanese Leg Avenue for me, it's like those high end halloween costumes. They aren't great but they sell a few knock off styles of Candyfruit pieces so if you can't afford the 200 dollar mark like you stated than Bodyline is probably you're best option.

You can honestly find resold costumes from all of these if you can't opt to buy it new for half the price, if you can moonspeak just be nice to the seller and they can cut you a deal. I would post other places but they are outside of you budget as is.

There sizing is pretty accurate but sometime the styles manipulate the size you should get (I ran into that issue in the past)

There's size charts at the bottom of each costume so you can figure out where you're at. It's the same rule for most japanese brands, go a size up. So if you're an xs in us than a jp small will fit you perfectly.

Sounds like you're a small but check their bust sizes as well to best figure out what you need.

Go with Bodyline. The fabric is this polyester fabric that washes easier. Knee socks are fucking everywhere and just use flats if you need your balls crushed.

Have any of you Milky Ange anons bought their BJD items? I wouldn't ever wear one of the maid costumes myself, but I'd considered getting one of the doll sized ones for my MSD and wondered how well made they are compared to the human clothes? Candyfruit is worth if if you're going for the cute short maid look in my personal opinion. They've been adding a lot of long/pass the knee maid costumes and they look nice but I don't like there's as much as my Milky Ange.

The quality will be just as great as the short ones but it just comes down to if you like the style they offer for the longer lengths. I don't own any of their longer lengths so I can't give you personal feedback

You can probably find a generic commercial bodice pattern with poofy sleeves (if you want specific features, like a bib or pintucks, make sure to look for it) and then add a circle skirt of the appropriate length on the bottom. A gathered rectangle skirt is fine too.

Idk if there's cosplay magazines with patterns, but you could search Otome no Sewing/GLB etc. for lolita patterns as many OPs have similar features. I think I made have seen an apron patern in one OnS as well.

I used a dorothy costume pattern for my camo maid outfit, and it turned out pretty well. I made some changes, like not having the apron attached to the dress itself, and I added a circle skirt rather than the rectangular box skirt the pattern called for.
