I'm on the fence about this. It's not really fair to other contestants if she enters a cosplay competition, especially one that isn't as "serious" (for the lack of a better word) as, say, OZCC Championships. She entered Brisnova's general comp last year and won best cosplay overall iirc.
On the other hand, it really also isn't fair to be like "hey, you can only enter competitions that are on a national/international scale because it's not fair to local cosplayers". But at the end of the day, cosplay is cosplay and I remind myself she can do whatever she wants.

Another discussion topic: What are your thoughts on people competing in competitions they've previously won?

Major Sam seems nice enough, and knows her stuff, but I'm in two minds about her entering Championships again. I mean, I'm all for people entering whatever competitions they want, but on the other hand, it doesn't really seem fair that she's entering again after winning the overall worldwide contest the year before last? I imagine a lot of people who would have wanted to enter would be too intimidated by the prospect of her entering again to even try.

From what I've gathered from her social media, Major Sam can dedicate a lot more time than other people to costumes since she doesn't seem to be currently employed or studying. To further expand on my point: I'm not trying to be needlessly mean, and Major Sam's stuff IS good. But hearing that she would enter again after only 1 year made any thought of myself entering disappear because my brain automatically went to 'Well, why should I enter when the worldwide champion is going to enter again?'.

It sort of feels less sporting? The competition has only entered its third year, and it feels less like a 'Oh anyone can enter' to 'oh now they have to compete to Defend Their Title as champions'.

Honestly I agree, having the same person who won come back again the very next year seems kinda... Well. Clearly they're very good - good enough to win, of course - but it'd also be nice to have new people come in and win. Not saying nobody can beat Sam, I honestly haven't a clue who she even is, but some people might see that shes entering and immediately drop out like "welp it's obvious she's gonna beat all of us". A 1-2 year bar on the comp you've previously won seems like a great idea.

Not sure whether it'd be better to apply it to *just* the overall/best in show winners, or if everybody who takes a title should have a bar on it too. I mean, I took out a title in the cosplay active this past weekend (yes I am the Sakura and Also the person who was suggested to just cosplay satan last thread, hi), and judging by the other skits that were there on Saturday.... eeeeehhhhh. I screwed up my skit but apparently it was still better than Bought-Love-Live-Costume-Youtube-Dance-Cover-#1, Bought-Love-Live-Costume-Youtube-Dance-Cover-#1, poorly made costume but decently covered Aikatsu dance, and cute little kids doing a dance who got best group anyway. Were there any other skits?

What I'm trying to say is if all winners were barred from entering the comp (or at least taking out their category) the next year it could be better, or it could just force mediocre entrants to win in their stead. For championship type contests I feel like it should definitely be a rule though, as a way to encourage new faces to come in.

Against Sam so I really hope she gets it. But then again Sam is doing Sakizou and that's usually a 'money grab' cosplay. I can def predict more Sakizou Cosplays in competitions. I will be entering Brisbane and purposely chose to do the Armour category to have a chance IF I get to Sydney. This will be my 3rd Championships so fingers crossed! Also anyone have thoughts on entering 2/3 states of championships? I know Lumin is infamous for it. It's definitely not fair imo. Especially the fact they are taking locals spots away when they had their chance in their one state. Iunno fucking annoying imo.

I can't help but feel like competitions are for finding out who's the best. If you don't think you can beat the previous best why are you competing?
In any other competition category, sports, music, literally anything else not letting previous winners back sounds absurd.
Serious competitions aren't about having a turn, they're about whose the best, that's why people enter them and compete. Banning previous winners just seems like a lame way to make the competition easier for yourself. Which shouldn't be your goal if your serious about competing and you're not a douche.

And I'm in two minds as well about previous winners entering again. On one hand, it would be motivating to know that you have to bring your A-game to compete against a literal world champion. On the other hand, like other gulls have said, it could discourage a lot of new people from entering and so we might miss out on seeing new talent. I think a 1-2 year ban is a good compromise.

Look at recent years. Lots of people enter other rounds.
Lumin was the Brisbane winner last year, and she's from Melbourne. Wirru also entered that round, and he's from Sydney
ElizabethMaree entered Sydney last year, as well as a bunch of Canberra cosplayers since they don't have their own comp.

It's impossible to ask people not to enter in states that are not their own, as people travel, and life happens.

Sydney usually brings out lots of talent from surrounding areas, including Blue Mountains and Canberra (there were three contestants from Canberra last year in Sydney).

Now that yall are mentioning surgery - what is the general consensus on cosplayers who've had cosmetic procedures? I know a lot of people rag on cosplayers that have had it, so what exactly is the problem with getting stuff done?

Asking because I feel awful about how much I have to edit my photos in order to not hate them, so cosmetic surgery is definitely a long-term goal for me.

Which state anon? Definitely start early, allow yourself plenty of time, have a good decent skit, dont half ass backdrops or stage props, practice your skit like crazy, don't have cringe tier audio, just because it's madman doesn't mean you have to go big, sometimes smaller is smarter, having a really solid skit and costume will easily put you above someone who has ridiculous armor but a lacking skit, audience reaction does play into your skit judging, basically don't half ass anything to do with your skit, everyone entering will have impressive costumes the difference will be in your performances, hope that helps!

Facepaint is a very difficult medium to work with con wise. Straight alcohol Based is awful for your skin but will stay on for days on end. Water based will cake horribly and will possibly crack or wipe off easily. Cream facepaint is out of the question. Hybrid alcohol is probably the best to use. Still comes off. You can't be too critical with facepaint because it's difficult. It comes off and looks gross in no time.

Don't listen to them, they've obviously never used them before, I used water based, it wasn't patchy and it didn't crack, getting good quality is key and seal it well, there is also airbrushing as an option, like another anon said, her application isn't awful, the red in her eyes makes it look gross and lack of highlighting and shading

Actually, I have used them before. Water based started wrinkling and felt awful. Not sure about a brand like kryolan but I've tried many others for my full body paint and they all were awful apart from on the arms.
