Update on my bag! Got some badges and a couple of other charms. I'm wondering if I should change anything, like the placement of the badges? I'm also wondering if I should add more decoration but I'm not too sure what I would add.

I've already seen two or three on the FB group. I like them if not for the cat ears and lack of colors.

>>
>>9539808
Searching Cat Ear Transparent Backpack brings up a dozen listings.

And they're really nice, actually! Or at least the one I got from Taobao is. A lot nicer than the knock off Wegos, just sturdier materials all the way around. You'll definitely want a backing board though, the lining to pin on in this one is a synthetic kind of plasticy fabric that won't self heal the way a natural fabric would.

nayrt but here!! its been on my wishlist for a while and went on sale
>>
>>9539808
I just got this bag in the other day. The quality is pretty nice, but the material of the faux leather feels kind of sticky-ish. Window needs a back board, but I prefer using boards. The zippers on the clear window scared me because for a moment I thought they were broken, but both zippers do indeed zip in both directions. The straps of the backpack might feel uncomfortable since the underside has the typical backpack strap material on the underside. It has two small pockets inside big enough to put your phone or wallet in. Oh and it also doesn't smell bad when you take it out of the packaging.
I was going to put the link, but someone beat me.

>>9539840
I'm assuming when you say backing board, you mean something like a cardboard insert? I'm still trying to figure out if that would work okay for my Tsuyu bag, all the stuff is too heavy and pulls down the fabric insert, even with velcro.
>>
>>9540175
I want to believe this bag doesn't need something like cardboard since it's well structured unlike most knock off heart bags. Cardboard and maybe a long strip of velcro along the top might help if you're really hellbent on keeping your bag together/from drooping inwards.
>>
how do you attach things like ribbon or other trimmings to your bags? I have a knockoff-heart backpack and was wondering if hotglue etc would be ok bcs I know for sure that If I start sewing things on the faux leather will start slowly ripping open from the needleholes.

True love is being able to make something out of nothing for your husbando/waifu.

In all seriousness, a handful of anons here have bags dedicated to characters with little to no merchandise. Try looking into making buttons/rosettes or resin-doming stickers. You can do it, anon!
>>

>>

>ugly button bags
So do you think button bags are ugly in general or are their bags just unfortunate
>>
>>9544795
When anons in this thread say "button bags" they're typically referring to random buttons thrown in a heart bag, not a bag filled with buttons of something specific.
>>
>>9544804
It's evolved. It used to be just any bag covered with a ton of buttons, usually associated with conventions or weeb girls. Now it has evolved to include heart bags and others meant for more cohesive themed itabags.

So many heart bags at Fanime. Worse knowing that most probably came from the dealers room where they ere $40-50 and definitely not Wego.
>>
>>9544433
Oooh fuck. Western stuff and especially live action stuff is a pain in the ass I feel.

On eBay it seems like there were some comics based on the series. Perhaps you could buy one and scan pages to make buttons or cut out pieces, laminate, and pin them on?

There's a few buttons of quotes, but I feel like you could design nicer ones. There's also some homemade plushes, but they're a it ugly. Someone in the FB group makes custom plushie heads which look kinda cute (not sure if they're a reliable seller tho).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Hitchhikers-Guid-to-the-Galaxy-PROMO-Postcard-ZAPHOD-BEEBLEBROX-/382144555641?hash=item58f9972a79:g:wEMAAOSw3YNXa5cE

This postcard is actually really cute I think! And the size would work fine for a bag.

Good luck, gull!
>>
>>9544815
I don't understand your reply because you essentially just repeated what I said lol

Anyway I can't feel bad for ppl who get their bags from the dealer's room because there are several facebook groups that include the old FAQ and this thread with the new one, all of which tell you where to buy them.
>>
>>9544815
I've seen so many bad heart bags lately that I've kinda started to hate mine :/ I got it because I wanted something "subtle" but right now I just want to go all out like >>9537561
>>
>>9544844
I always thought of heart bags as beginner's bags in the sense that they don't have a ton of room that needs to be filled and have a shape that can be considered easier to show case things. Larger bags, bags with a different shape altogether and shoulder bag style bags I would consider more dedicated since they require A LOT more merch and usually some kind of design/color sense if you don't want to just do symmetrical displays.

I can't be too angry or even disgusted by heart bags since idk they're very "babbies first ita bag uwu". Only heart bags that are full blown/extra af are usually what I see as an exception to the rule since usually the bag owner is showing their power level.
>>
>>9544707
I've tried but they complain about the price of most straps. They think anything over $5 is a lot.

>>9544795
What >>9544804 said. But most button bags are pretty ugly imho unless they look like >>9537562 or pic related.
>>
>>9544844
Yeah I feel the same. I still like my heart bag for occasional everyday use but for cons I feel I need to go all out.
>>
>>9544844
>>9544852
I think heart bags are good as babby's first bag because sometimes people get into the hobby and don't quite realize how much money your average bag costs to fill. They're a way to test the water instead of just diving right on in and blowing a bunch of money on something that you'll regret later on.

I sort of regretted my heart bag at first too, but now I have it for that extra merch that doesn't fit in my main bag.

Bag's ordered, and I'm starting to put together merch while I wait for it to arrive! Not a lot out there for Garrus, but I'm trying. It feels weird putting other artists' art on buttons, but I'm not sure what else to do. I guess it's not like I'm selling it...
>>
>>9545316
I really hope you asked their permission first.
>>
>>9542102
On a sort of related note, Japanese are stepping up their itabag-game even more. I visited Yowapeda-event over the weekend at Sky Tree and saw elementary-age kids with itabags. Those were really good bags too, but to be fair the kids were usually with their mothers, so the moms probably helped. Some of the moms looked straight-up fujos too. Either way, it was my first time seeing anyone younger than a teenager have an itabag. Kinda fucks you up when you see a nine-year old girl with a god-tier bag full on Midosuji.

>tfw no daughter to poison with itabags and help her put together a cute child-sized bag.
>>
>>9545385
Should I? I haven't done anything with them yet, I could always just toss them in the trash if they don't want me to use them
>>
>>9545431
You should have asked before you even got them pressed/ordered, anon. At best, that's very rude.
>>
>>9545436
I have a button machine, I just printed some out and pressed them. I guess because I just printed them, I didn't even think about it. I'll definitely get permission before I use them
>>
>>9545436
I checked to see if the artists had merch for sale, even of the images, before I printed them if it helps. I would have bought them if I could have
>>
>>9545478
Even if it's just for personal use it's always better to ask, especially since you're planning on posting your bag online and chances are the artist will see it or someone will show it to them, even if it's slim. You don't have to explain anything to me but definitely ask the artist/s. Another option is commissioning them for custom button designs to press yourself which is something I've done in the past for my own bags.
>>
>>9545481
Custom commissions are a really good way to get art for buttons! It also makes sure the button will fit your theme/color scheme.

My favorite artist stopped taking commissions just as I saved up enough to comfortably ask for stuff. Augh.
>>
lol
>>
>>9545488
>professional itabag decorator
Sure, but idk who would even consider hiring them lol
>>
>>9545488
> can i just become a professional itabag decorator?
>>
>>9545486
This is true. In addition to the character references I also included a color swatch to all the artists I commissioned so the art at least looked similar in theme/tone.
>>
>>9545488
This person can't be older than 15.

Also the idea of someone else doing your bag just... defeats the purpose of the bags I feel.
>>
>>9545517
It absolutely does. You don't love your waifu/husbando if you can't even be assed to do the bag yourself. Maybe this is gatekeeping, but if I ever heard of someone doing that I would definitely consider them a fake stan.
>>
>>9545481
Not original anon but this is why I'm sticking to official images of my husbando for my bag. Only got a friend to make me some art in a trade to use for a button. There's a lot of nice art out there but so is a steep language barrier. Which sort of sucks because I do want prints of some fanart out there but even getting something custom printed without permission, even if just to put on my wall, feels (and most likely is) wrong. I can understand though as an artist.
>>
>>9545478
It's still extremely rude, and you can easily find official art to print and make into buttons. If you didn't want all official art, commissioning exists.
>>
>>9545478
Also, as a fellow fem!Shepard/Garrus shipper, I suggest if you have a way to take screenshots of the game, to totally make buttons of those. There's some iconic scenes with them, like the dancing one, that would look great on your itabag! Also Garrus makes some adorable faces ingame that could be made into buttons. Just a suggestion!
>>
>>9545431
If you have to ask "should i?" that should answer your question. Worst case scenario if you went on without ever asking and one of the artists saw this, they could have no idea your intentions and blast you for stealing/selling/etc. So yes, as a precautionary always ask. Also as stated before, it's just polite.

I asked that same question when making my own itabag and the consensus was "don't use random art without permission".
>>
Anyone have friends who jumped on to the itabag bandwagon but like... have no will to put their own bag together? Like they buy the bag and the merch but won't put it together themselves?

> Like I've had one friend who has arthritis in her hands, so she asked me for help
> She told me what she wanted and I just pined where she said, worked out well
>It did open the flood gate other people to put together their bags
>one friend asked me because she 'didn't know what she was doing'
>she bought me merch for my husbando for me showing her how to pin shit to a bag?
> Was a weird day
> another person didn't even ask and just thru all the supplies at me and whined for hours on a plane till I gave up and pined it all.

It seems to defeat the purpose of the itabag because while there is a concentration on the merch, there is also the whole aspect of spending time designing your own bag. Like my main itabag took me hours to get everything pined in just the right way not saying everyone needs to spend hours designing their bags but it should be something you do on your own and not get your friends to make it so you can join the bandwagon.
>>
>>9546059
Yeah wtf. Apart from the first friend the others seem kinda lazy. At least the second one payed you in merch?
>>
Does Japonicamarket send out any kind of confirmation that they got your order or something? I didn't get anything and I'm worried, other Proxys I've used have always sent something.
>>
>>9546064
I suppose, like she was way nicer about it then person number 3?

I suspect 3 just wanted to show of and brag about her merch but no one gave a damn about her mess of a bag. She is a proven attention whore bandwagon jumper. It was a Touken Ranbu series bag, at one point she got pissed because people asked to take pics of my bag but said nothing about hers.
>>
Okay so i just got enough merch to make my bag. I have made an insert in 3mm foam and covered it in fabric. Do you prefer to pin with safety pins or sewing your merch onto the insert?
>>
>>9546142
Why the hell would you sew it's actually better to use safety pins, threads can't hold the weight of plastic.
>>
>>9546082
Yes they do! They send you one to confirm the order. Another to say it's placed and a third to say it's arrived.
>>
>>9546082
When I've used them they always tell me when my items have arrived and if I want my final invoice
>>

My friend sews her onto the insert when she's done designing it. If you sew them well they hold up really good and you won't see any ugly safety pins.
>>
>>9545895
>>9545965
Is this a thing going on? I've got a package from China and one from Japan and both have been in the wind since they left their respective countries June 14th/June 15th. That'll be three weeks each in two days.
>>
>>9546148
You're a dumbass who has obviously never sewn anything. Using safety pins creates metal bar lines everywhere and allows the charms more movement to slide out of place. Sewing is more secure, more subtle, and you can even use clear thread if you're picky about colors.
>>
>>9546152
Ugh they have not messaged me anything, but the things I wanted are sold now... And I'm sure I gave the right email... Welp, maybe I'll wait another 24h and if then there's still nothing, I'll message them...
>>
>>9546148
My merch is sewn in? And it stays fine? Don't be a bitch if you don't even know what your're talking about.
>>
Itabag newbie here. How important is it to make a foam backing board for your bag? I read the google doc and the previous forum and it seems to be mentioned only occasionally. My first bag is going to be with the To Alice heart bag if that helps knowing in order to answer my question.
>>
>>9545618
I appreciate your kindness. I wasn't trying to be rude. I've definitely gotten some good advice here
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhyJ6nr3fTA
>>
>>9546148
Safety pins are more likely to pop rather than thread. If you're worried about weight, there's button thread. Mine are sewn down onto my insert for this exact reason.
>>
>>9546476
It isn't necessary but a lot of people like to use them. When it comes to any bag with a shaped window, people often use them so the fabric that's "supposed" to hold all of your stuff doesn't sag (and it absolutely will if you have just 5 items sometimes). The sagging can usually be counter acted by stuffing the bag itself with a pillow/sweater or something else. Shoulder style base bags don't usually have a sagging issue but usually need to be stuffed as well.
>>
>>9546476
It honestly just comes down to preference and the type of base bag you use.
>>
>>9546476
I like them for ease of use, and also because I use the same bag for a couple of different characters and just change out the backing boards with the merch.
>>

So do you usually use itabags as just regular bags or do you just stuff them with pillows or something and have another bag for your things?
>>
>>9546930
Depends on the person, but personally I entered this hobby specifically because I wanted to get practical use out of merchandise I was going to buy either way, so I use mine as normal bags, and wear them while running errands etc in addition to at conventions.
>>
>>9546930
I have one itabag I use for casual/daily things and one meant for cons/events, primarily because the one for cons is really loud and attention grabbing while my casual itabag is more toned down. I use a shitty ebay heart bag for my day to day since I don't mind that getting dinged up.

Has anyone purchased this bag? It's cute in comes in a few colours, but it looks like the front heart window isn't actually a window - despite clearly having transparent plastic and a different coloured liner. I'm wondering how easy it'd be to mod.

I have one I've been using as my everyday bag for the last few months and a smaller one I'm about to use for weekends and when I don't want to carry around my big one. My third one is still a WIP and will be for carrying bigger items and/or showing off at cons. In the future I want to be able to have more bags and will probably use them depending on my purse needs for the day, outfit, or mood. I like crossbody or large shoulder bags though.

I use mine for quick trips like seeing friends and cons. I brought my shitty wego knockoff Kylo Ren bag to Disney and it held up surprisingly well, considering I was carrying a ton of shit like umbrellas and popcorn buckets in there, so I might use some of them more often. But no, I don't currently use one as an "everyday" bag.

I don't have a base bag yet but i've collected 15 pieces of merch and looking at it all together is. horrifying. when making you first bag or ever now, have you ever gotten to a point where you're like 'what have i done??' because. i feel that right now. in fact, i wanted to get a heart bag because its less space to fill but 15 pieces of merch is probably too much, considering the size of some of these keychains and buttons...

I'm tempted to make an ita bag but the character I love is so basic and common, I might feel bad wearing it in public. Any ideas for cute bag design stuff I could wear in jfash at cons or stuff without looking over the top or stupid? On the plus side, tons of official merch though.

How do you get through that initial anxiety of wearing or buying up for a bag?
>>
>>9550157

Usually people just make collage shirts or if they want something more subtle they add little symbols the characters has or some other type of reference. I don't know why you'd feel stupid just because a character you love is common? People make Naruto and Inuyasha bags.

I think the only thing that might work and go with the character is something holographic, sparkly or girly themed so pearly beads and some star beads mixed in (and/or maybe those crystal type beads) sounds like a good idea or maybe some sort of glitter confetti if you could find some way of securing it into just the sections behind the character so it doesn't float around and cover her.

Finally put together a bag for my waifu, after having casually collected merch for a while. Problem is, it looks like shit, and I can't figure out why. Is the solution really just more merch?
Never buying a Salus bag again, either, the quality is shit. Any other small cross-body bags available in black? Either I'm blind or there aren't any available right now.
>>
>>9551853
I was interested in a Salus bag for a while, do you mind giving a review? Also I know there's some crossbody bags that are very similar to the Salus design but are a different brand/cheaper version that anon linked here >>9549544

There seems to be a lot of empty space, so maybe consider filling it with embellishments/accents? Flowers or rhinestones or things like that.
>>
>>9551857
Don't really know how much I can help, I'm afraid. For me, the material seems flimsy, and the bag needs to be overstuffed, or it'll sag. The adjustable strap is nice, and it comes with an extra short strap, if you want to carry it over your arm. It seems cheaper, overall, than other bags I've had, including Zakkamart, Movic, and whatever brand that bag is that's called Mise tote on Ami2.

I was afraid I'd have to fill it a bit more. I'll try to think of something, if not, great excuse to buy more merch. Thanks!
>>
>>9551859
Thanks a lot for your review! I was hoping the canvas would be pretty thick but I guess that doesn't seem to be the case. I prefer not to stuff my bag but I really do like cross body bags... I may end up caving and just getting some kind of backpack style.

If there's any corresponding colors your waifu has, I think making the little details those colors would look really nice! I would definitely suggest any type of ribbon or flowers, or even try making some of the buttons a rosette since that tends to make bags look more full!

When you have a big badge like that yellow one; I suggest making it the center of the bag. Meaning try placing it exactly in the middle and then working around it.

Try using the rest of the badges as a border and fill the middle around the yellow badge with the rubber charms.

Just something that you might consider.

Dunno if anyone ever wondered about the crossbody Wego heart bags, but I got one a few months ago. It's study feeling and nice, I carry this bag as my regular purse and it's held up super well (even the satin lining is doing good). It's way nicer than my knockoff eBay heart backpack that I ended up giving to a friend, but it is definitely small. Like, I have too much merch for this bag and Nick is not a popular character with a ton of merch at all.

(It has the same pocket-window situation as the Wego backpack, I just used a piece of felt from the craft store trimmed to make my backing.)

I preordered some merch for the Radiant Historia reboot coming out. I'm excited because I loved the DS game, but there are some stylistic choices I don't care for like giving Eruca long hair/moe face.

What! I had no idea. I've had the original on my backlog for ages, but wow, I feel weirdly hyped for the reboot, solely because of all of the acclaim I heard. It must be really great to get a reboot and new merch!

Clear thread around the neck should hold it subtly, as long as the thread is tight enough and the shoulders aren't too narrow/sloped. You might also want to put some up through the crotch to the armpit (over the leg) for security, as long as it doesn't look too lewd (unless you're okay with lewding your mini-figs).
>>
>>9552925
hopefully that works. husbando has big hair. so might be a little bit difficult to secure through the neck. i'll keep you updated
>>
>>9552863
Gilgamesh from the Fate franchise. Straps average about $20-30 each due to popularity/old/exclusives. Have already gotten most of everything from places like amiami. Even saved a bit by finding nice fanmerch on booth/tictail (got a friend to mail me stuff from an artist alley from a con she went to). It's not bad but it adds up and I wouldn't pay those prices if I didn't love his character lol

Once I get my bag, I'll probably make custom buttons off of official artwork.

At least your waifu isn't Saber. Though might actually be easier due to the sheer amount of merch she gets, I'm not super into Fate but I don't think Gil (or really most characters) get merched quite as heavily as she does.

Also seconding >>9553055. Deck it all out, red velvet drapery and gold chains hanging on the bag, etc.
>>
>>9553080
Do you want someone to color the manga scan? Like either directly add color or trace the lines and then color? Because I wouldn't mind doing that, if it's going on a button I'm assuming it's a small image.

I want a messenger styled bag and the only one I've found is the heart one from toalice, which is too small for all my straps/buttons. I want a smaller bag to use sometimes, so I'm going to order it for the sake of it being gold and cutely small.

>>9553112
Saber's merch is abundant yeah, so it's relatively cheap. Except her figure aftermarket...

I do plan on decking my bag out in gold chains and gold in general since my base bag is red (attached: an inspo but without the straps on the outside because hot damn just why). Yellow didn't fit because it blends too much with his merch and red is his secondary color which everyone uses. I was thinking of jumping bandwagon on battery-powered lights to give it a "glowing" effect like how his armor tends to do. idk I just want my bag to be obnoxious like he is
>>
>>9553195
Godspeed anon, I hope your chains are very jingly and make it nice and obnoxious. I'd worry that lights would make the merch too comparatively dark or otherwise draw attention away from it, but I don't know how intense/widespread you're planning on making them. How about arranging small LEDs in the shape of Tokiomi's or Kotomine's command spell, or in a pattern based on his armor/tattoos? Also I like how that bag mostly uses rubber straps, I've never really liked the look of acrylic.

I have that same one in purple and I love it, but do wish it was just a bit bigger. I got it for my Christophe bag and quickly realized it's not at all gonna fit all my charms. At least I was just doing it to use up my extras from all these full sets I'm buying for my Victuri bags.
>>
>>9554147
Honestly, just use them if you want. While I'd normally not recommend bootlegs, if it were me I'd rather have them on my bag as a reminder of my friend's kindness than ~*omg gotta leave them off to protect my bagging rep!*~. (it's highly unlikely that anyone looking at it will care that much anyway)
>>
>>9554147
My boyfriend accidentally bought me bootlegs because I told him how rare and exclusive these rubber straps were. Bless his heart. I put it on my phone instead since my bag was pretty full at the time.

I don't usually encourage bootlegs, but if it's just one or two that was gifted, it should be okay. Shouldn't be too obvious if it's hiding among a bunch of other official merch anyways.

Different anon with a Salus bag here, and I quite like it a lot but the design has some issues. The canvas itself is high quality and thick, but the bag has no interfacing at all and is very floppy because of it, I have a small bag so I don't have to stuff it (it's stuffed enough with my personal items) but I could easily see a large Salus bag being much too floppy without something to hold it up.

My big issue with it though is that the way the clear window is forced to fold over itself combined with this lack of interfacing means the plastic is constantly bending, and has developed quite a few minor tears, rips, and cracks along the edge where it folds over because of this.

Photo of the rips, they're not big but it's annoying and they get worse over time. This is after using the bag fairly regularly for daily use over about 10 months.

>>
>>9554149
How did you get the alpha channel so clean? I'm a traditional scrub so I'm curious how you got out all the white.
>>
>>9554917
I just put the scan in a Multiply layer (most digital programs have this option, I use Krita) and colored in a normal layer under it. That way the white didn't show and I didn't have to disturb the lines to erase it. So the only erasing & redrawing I did was to remove the corner of the speech bubble.

Usually the only way to repair these types of things is to replace the entire vinyl window or to use a patch, which isn't particularly great as shown in the pic. Replacing vinyl altogether isn't difficult it's just annoying and not something you want to have to do when you drop $20-30 on the bag before SS/proxy fees and shipping. All I could suggest is trying to patch it and then hide the patching with outside decoration.

What's shown is a patch from Tear‑Aid Vinyl Repair Kit Type B.

the thing I've found with the salus bag is you need to pin it to the clear window to give it some support. I can't promise this will fix the problem long term as I've only owned my bag for a short while.
>>
>>9555264
Dif anon with a Salus bag. I did this >>9555337 with mine for support and I'm not sure if that's a contributing factor or what, but after some use it tore in one spot. Going down the side of one of the top corners where the seam is (so not straight into the plastic, just along the zig-zag stitch). I moved my stuff to the opposite side of the bag and carried it that way and the same thing happened.
Unfortunately I don't have any solutions for repair. I ended up removing everything for my ita-tree around Christmas and waited for a new bag to arrive. It's currently sitting in a box.

>>
>>9555363
It's a design flaw that can't really be helped given the style of bag. They would have to completely abandon the design and make a completely new bag, but they figure "Why" mostly because it's a unique bag and people buy them. It's not really any different than any of the other base bag's and their faults that don't make them functional or defeat the purpose of the entire thing. No bag is perfect but the vinyl tearing is a big problem.
