I have a "friend" that has been doing photoshoots with his phone the past few months. He had a camera but it broke and only started working recently to try and afford a camera. It honestly baffles me that he went to so many cons and gatherings with just a phone when he could've been saving that money towards a camera. Not hard if you can take pretty photos. Be nice and offer free shoots to pretty girls in pretty cosplay to start off, people hardly ever say no to free shit. Take page names and make sure to get credited. Helps to know people already for the promos but if not, it'll just take longer. Being female gets you a lot more trust with boudoir/hotel/isolated shoots and stuff imo but there's always going to be the crazy man-hating if one male photographer is scum they all must be scum types. Gotta keep a good rep and stay professional and drama free. Don't shoot more than you can handle however tempting the extra money is.

It's both easier AND harder to be a female photag in the con circuit. Yes, female cosplayers trust you more, but the dudes on the scene are shit. I'm a pretty average lady and I do photography at cons sparingly because A) the money is weak and I can make 10xs cosplay money at a wedding or local event and B) I had bad experiences.

Unfortunately, it's very much a "boys club" and I genuinely got bullied and physically assaulted at a con I was working. I got called in by the con runner to do some media work since he knew I was reliable + he has had issues with his media team not actually shooting the con events. I ran into a ton of issues with the other "media professionals". Aside from general shittiness in attitudes, some fatass local photographer was shooting the rave with me and he kicked me in the back of the knees, "accidentally" elbowed me in the face while shooting overhead, and was constantly stepping in front of my camera for crowd shots. I told the con runner about it and I'm fairly certain he's banned but I don't do con work anymore. I'll shoot for my friends when I'm at a con for fun, but otherwise? No, it's not worth the stress. These "cosplay photographer" assholes wouldn't know professionalism if it bit them in the ass.

Before someone brings it up: I wasn't a dick to these dudes. I was friendly and professional because I approached it like I would any job. I was the only woman on the team + being the "new kid" so I can only guess that's why. The irony is that I have a better photography resume than any of the jackoffs I met that weekend.

Could have specified. Take a look at the pages of cosplay photographers people actually like but basically just make them look pretty. Nice lighting, nice framing, creative angles and poses, nice locations. Personally I like when my photographer suggests poses or adjustments they think would make a photo look nice, and it does.
Green screen with CG and random effects rarely ever looks good imho. You have to really know what you're doing or else it looks like someone got copy/pasted into a fantasy background in mspaint.

In fact, i'm not into cosplay photo. I was informing myself about how things are in cons, for a future project.
But everything i read on this topic grind my gear.

All the pics on this topic are bad : it's just casual photos with an obvious lack of basics. Compositing, lighting, post-treatment, scenarisation... and also actor skill of the models (and the fault of the photographer to not give instructions)

And this is just the technical side of my cringe.

My advice about how to verify the skill of the photographer?
Simple : check his photobook, and check his nature, portraits, animals, plants, or sport photos. His photobook doesn't contain any of this kind? Move on, he's not a photographer.
His photobook contains some? Nice, let's appreciate them : can you see a part of life in its photos? A movement? Some photos can bring you feelings?

Very few cosplay photographers shoot outside of cosplay, because for most photography isn't a career for them, just a hobby they've decided to exploit.
