Questionable fabric choices edition
>>
I'm working on Eros right now, seems like everyone either gets the fabric right, or the crystals right, or the hair/makeup right but never all three and usually just one.

Pic related; perfect face/hair/body, good fabric choices, shitty crystals.
>>
>>9431955
Pic also related; from what I can tell the crystals and wig/makeup are acceptable, but not a fan of the fabric. I think the context of the show makes it really obvious that it's black mesh and yet I've seen the vast majority of cosplayers do shiny silver fabric.
>>
Gonna do a small dump of side characters. If anyone has seen cosplays of the side character performance outfits, please post.

Give it to me straight lads. is it alright to buy a yurio wig off ebay?

cause i honeslty have no idea what cgls deal with ebay wigs are.

its like a mixed review of them please reply asap
>>
>>9431974
who??
>>
>>9432355
Some are great, most are shitty. Genetally not worth the money, even if super cheap. Especually for characters in a show as realistic a setting as YoI, a bad wig will stand out as ESPECIALLY shitty. Get something in a good color blend, with proper length bangs for styling, and worth it.
>>
>>9431974

>>
I think this one is good on every aspects.
>>
Selfposting, can I get some concrit on (what you can see oops) of my cosplay? Crystals are still to be made and I didn't bind for this pic. I saw someone do a rhinestone gradient for Yuri's skirt and liked the idea a lot, not sure about my execution though. Figured it would be better than a shitty painted gradient. I don't have many pictures but I can take more.

>>9431964
Imo a lot of people do that because most yoi cosplayers are female and it's infinitely easier to bind without having to show skin. And solid fabric is easier to sew than mesh I guess. I find my mesh looks pretty weird, especially on the raised boob areas.

>>9432355
Extreme hit and miss, usually on the miss side. If you want to gamble with cheap prices, go for it but last time I tried to ebay a plain black wig it was basically child sized and barely fit around my head...

>>9431955

>>
>>9432461
Tbqh if you bind properly this is one of the best I've seen. Maybe consider doing a line of rhinestones around the seams of the solid black as well to hide the edges of the panels?
>>
>>9432377
It's my favorite I've seen so far, but still not a fan of the crystals (which you can see better here) just being groupings of smaller rhinestones though I definitely appreciate what was being gone for and personal preference is not absolute statement of quality.
>>
>>9432461
i think the mesh you chose is a little too wide gapped but otherwise the construction is on point

>>
>>9432951
I'd find a local theatre costumes shop and check out the wigs there. Same general price range as arda but usually a big more realiatic in design, Yuri's hairstyle REALLY makes wigs suffer from a sort of anime fakeness and ya gotta work to counteract that.
>>
Space Invader just finished an Eros commission, thoughts?
>Here he is! Yuri's "Eros" costume from Yuri on Ice. Stretch velvet, glittery fishnet, and black powermesh. The torso is lined in nude spandex, and the skirt piece is lined with cherry red stretch silk charmeuse. The rhinestones are a mix of high quality acrylic, Czech crystal and Swarovski crystal

Guys, I need an opinion.
I'm planning on making Yurio's long program costume and for the Red/Magenta parts I bought these fabrics
https://www.spandexworld.com/c3/catalog/product/5009
https://www.spandexworld.com/c3/catalog/product/4251
because they were the closest to the fabric swatch that Chacott used. But now that I got have them in person the dots to me just look off. Should I use it or should I try to find a different fabric?
>>
>>9434230
I think the bigger issue is that the velvet, especially with all of the lining, just looks too heavy and bulky to be a real skating costume.
>>
>>9433775
>>9434230
>>9434414
This costume is velvet but I have to agree after comparing the two, the velvet looks too thick on the Ero's costume. I really like the crystals though.
>>
>>9434414
and velvet usually does not photograph well (unless used in things like dresses) because of the pile and how it reflects light and the juxtaposition of thin mesh to thick velvet looks a little strange?
but yeah it looks like someone wanted to find a way to wear a velour tracksuit to a bdsm bar to me wwwww

So nice to see more of the lesser seen characters.

>>
>>9436246
At least that gives him an "easy" skating costume for people who don't want to do the bland casual outfits every can just order but not have to make a custom bodysuit with tricky fabrics that translate badly to real life.

(My salt is real because I started on Eros Yuuri before episode 12 came out and he got matching costumes with Victor man that would have been soooo much easier)

Instead of eBay, I'd suggest using AliExpress. It's the same stuff, but people can post reviews with pictures of items, so you can get an actual idea of how something will look or fit.

Has good reviews, a lot of orders, and some pictures. I also think it's worth paying for ePacket shipping. Rather than 2-3 months, it should get to you in 2-3 weeks.

Why tho. The gradiant looks blothcy and not actually gradiated. The rrst of the putfit looks fine from this angle and I like the Yurio minus the wig, which they both had more fitting shoes but photo is cute and they look like they're having fun
>>
>>9439715
Your Victor looks find (but could benefit from some eyebrow coloring and SUBTLE crossplay contouring,) that Yuri wig needs some drastic intervention. Try washing and restyling without as much gel or spray so it doesn't look as gooey or plasticy? Costumes look bought and are fine, but you really gotta nail it with the hair and makeup if you're gonna go that route.
>>
>>9431964
I did a mesh over silver fabric, essentially because of what >>9432459 said. I put my costume on hold tho bc I can't figure out what to do about those damn crystals, and now it's summer and I'll die.

I was thinking of maybe 3d printing the crystals, but I'm worrie dthat I won't be able to get a nice finish on them.

>>9433832
Velvet is honestly probably the best material to use in terms of realism for this type of costume, it's just a matter of choosing the right type. The stuff they used there is definitely too thick. Velour / velvet are really commonly used in skate costumes tho.

>>9439715
Yo I don't wanna be mean, but Yuri needs to tuck those ears in the hair. also don't have the hair inside the glasses frames, nobody who wears glasses does that. It's uncomfortable and annoying.

Cast them in resin.
It's not terribly hard and you'll get exactly the size and shapes you need. Plus you can sell off extras to other Yuri cosplayers as a set.

-or-

You can go the big gemstone route and piece together something that looks close.

Hey dudes, I'm working on a Viktor for myself, an interpretation of the 'Stay Close To Me' program outfit that was in the Shingeki No Bahamut videogame collaboration. I don't want to do chiffon or a sheer fabric since it doesn't seem to be depicted as translucent at all in this artwork, nor does it have a gradient, I also want to line it. However, I'm not sure if I sure how to add some dimension to the fabric, and deal with the fact that the back is literally a colorblocked black panel with no transition. There's a semi matte poly fabric called 'peachskin silk' that has a really nice slinky fit and doesn't look really cheap in light, nor does it have a grain like dupioni or faux 'dupione', but I didn't know if going flat color blocking would lose a lot of character/dimensionality of the garment? I'm going to be using metal brass stampings, brass rose buttons, gold rope chains(even for the epaulets), doing gold bias taping, etc, so I'm ~thinking~ it should be okay as far as level of detail?

Also, Arda's greys are so harsh and flat, so I opted for their Victory Blonde which is a platinum/grey blend to hopefully compliment my skin a bit better, but we shall see. Don't know if any other Victor's used it yet to compare (wig delivers tomorrow)
>>
>>9440461
>sell extras
I like the way you think.

I was just worried about resin maybe being too heavy? I don't really have any experience with it.
>>
>>9436128
I saw them at Sakura-Con over the weekend! The cosplays are pretty good even if the stitch lines on the yellow puffy jacket don't match up. So much better than the sea of Taobao'ed and low-effort YOI cosplays at the con. I saw men running around in nothing but briefs and a Canada medal and crown, and girls who threw on a BATHROBE and wig and called it Victor.
>>
>>9441272
This is what I'm banking on with my Eros cosplay- a billion people doing low to no effort YoI cosplays so that I'll still get some attention even with an only 6-7/10 skating outfit.

I don't even know why but I hate that shit when it's more than 3 people.
JFC robe Victors, make his green resort yukata

JJs better have that underwear down pat, be not a pasty bitch, no gut. Extra touch would be an actual Canada print bathrobe to cover up in.

If you are gonna be eye rolling shitty version of something then at least do it right.
>>
>>9441801
Agree so much. If you're gonna do whats functionsally a closet cosplay in terms of clothes they better be perfectly accurate clothes, or you better knock it out of the part with appearence/makeup/wig styling

Yes, you get me.

If you are going to slack on the costume then turn it up elsewhere.

Anyone find any decent YOI Shingeki no Bahamut cosplays? I vaguely remember seeing a pretty decent one on the Cosplay Amino but now I can't find it for the life of me.

A few posts above I posted the Viktor alternate from SNB that I'm doing by June(I'm starting on pattern drafting Sunday while I'm ordering my fabrics and such). Other than that I haven't seen anyone do any of them yet. I liked the sleeves/drape on the version I'm doing better, and also don't want to die in Texas heat in that version. I'm still planning on doing an ice wand to fit the RPG mage aesthetic, but slightly larger scale.
>>
>>9432461
Sorry for the dumb question but your work looks so nice and clean, I figured I'd ask. Did you stitch the black parts over a mess base or are they all separate pieces sewn together? Cant see that well on my phone, it looks like the black parts have sort of a satin stitch over the edges? Sorry if I'm not making sense, my english is garbage today.
Asking because I really wanted to attempt making Eros as well but I can never figure how to make it look so crisp and clean like yours!

>>
>>9444443

Don't worry Anon, I'm happy to answer! The main part where the mesh meets the black are separate pieces sewn like a normal seam with the extra fabric topstitched to stay under the black part. All the black detailing is just pieces of fabric with the raw edges tucked under and topstitched downq. No fancy stitching or anything, sewing really isn't my forte and my machine is a cheap Walmart sale piece of shit. It's a miracle it turned out this neat desu. Hope that made sense!
>>
>>9446188
I'm glad to see pics of this looking nice, I had wanted to sew my pieces together into one solid piece and then make the shirt out of it but it was just too much for my skillset, so i went with the same method. I'm like 80% done and haven't sewn on the pieces yet, but yours looks really good so I'm hopeful.
>>
Wondering if anyone can give me a pointer on how to fix this... I sewed the collar onto my Eros costume, and then realized I'd forgotten the little opening/v-shaped bit in the front. Is there a way to save it without having to rip it off completely and re-do it?
>>
>>9447702
You could maybe get away with taking if off only round the front, pulling through, sewing the V in, clipping the curves, turning it back through and putting the seam back in but irl it's probably less heartache to take the collar off altogether to fix it.

You could do it by hand if you're neat though and gently roll the fabric inwards to hide the raw edges?
>>
>>9446188
That made lots of sense, thank you so much for replying!! Your costume looks so well made, you did a wonderful job.
>>

Yeah I looked at men's obis and found a black one and some appropriate mens clogs. I know men's yukata and women's yukata are slightly different but you think anyone will notice? I think the only difference I read was the bottoms of the sleeves were shaped differently and women's yukata have cuts under the armpit for more movement?

Just gotta hope my last minute budgeting comes through once I pay May's bills but I really want to do this.

It arrived so I tossed it on real quick for photos. The fabric is super sturdy and surprisingly warm? Wig is still a WIP so ignore how shitty it is, styling is not my thing and I've not trimmed the bangs yet.

Your obi is too high up on your waist and too thick. Fold it in half and wear it lower if you want it to look proper for a male character.

Bless, anon. It was that width when I pulled it out of the packaging and I thought it looked odd but I couldn't figure out why they'd give me one so thick if it wasn't supposed to be that way. It's incredibly long but I'll figure something out along the way.

Should I go for styling like the grey in grey where the yukata is looser up top or more like the guy in yours with a tighter top? I'm not really familiar with which is the more common styling since I see just about everything in pics I find.

This is gonna be so fun in pics. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Go for the tighter top. It will look less sloppy. Yurio isn't a slob. Set your obi lower and narrow like >>9473486 said and you are set.

Take pics with any cool Otabeks you find.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it since I'm a little out of my depth cosplaying Yuri. I'm a bit old for him and adding in the yukata aspect is just another new experience since I've only worn yukata/kimono a handful of times and then I had a friend dressing me who owned them.

I'll definitely do a tighter top and work on the obi! I'll look up some more men's obi tutorials and have another go at the wig and then post again when I think I've got it all set for another round of critique before con.

Seriously, thank you guys for helping me! I really want to get this right.

This anon here, I finally finished the costume and added the crystals! Got a dress form too so I can actually take pictures of things now. I'm really happy with the end result!

In case anyone is wondering, it's three pieces. Leotard with crotch flap, belt and pants that snap together so I can actually pee and no giant zipper necessary.

>so I can actually pee
You're a genius. You'd be surprised how many people forget that's a thing you have to do in costume.

It looks really good and I like the crystals!
>>
>>9480272
Won't the leotard crotch part pull at the pants and make them bunch up at the crotch?
>>
>>9480725
It sounds to me like the leotard goes under the pants and the belt hides the join.
>>
>>9480272
Looks great anon! The leotard is pretty fucking smart

Don't these people ever get tired of policing shit, it's just a stupid meetup circled around an anime about dudes ice skating. They're fictional for christ's sake

Fucks sakes Yuri isn't even a minor. That's what pisses me off about the American fandom is that they apply American laws to foreign material. Yuri's old enough to drink alcohol legally if he wanted to, he just can't purchase it on his own. Yuri was also legal for sex at age 14 according to Russia's laws and hell, even under America's laws he and Otabek would be legal because they're only 2 years apart in age.
>>
>>9482711

That's what gets me about this stuff. It's incredibly inept and childish to not consider the world's laws.
