Itabag FAQ and Beginners Guide v. 2.1
>https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nzzfTUCq5O0KHA3eqC1Spk0Q9ZxQmZOs4ckHVy4ZIGk
Read the document first before asking basic questions that have been answered time and time again like "is making a bag for ___ ok?" and "where do i get the heart bags??".

Hope this isn't too stupid of a question, but it's not in the FAQ so: how do you put stickers in your ita bags? Double sided tape or do you actually just use it as a sticker to stick it on there somewhere?
>>
>>9369981
some people use blank buttons, plastic, anything hard you can stick them to

>bags with eye masks in them
I've been meaning to look for them being used, since my near-merchless husbando got one recently. Thanks anon!
>>
>>9369981
Depending on the size of the sticker wouldn't those hard top loaders for trading cards work?
>>
>>9370043
Toploaders are pretty big and can be difficult to pin in a bag, I wouldn't recommend them for anything but cards.
>>
I hate being this bitter, but I'm so ready for Yuri on Ice to die out. I think the bags I've seen are cute, especially the ones with the fairy lights, but I'm tired of getting constant notifications from the sales group for the same box sets three or four times. It's been just as bad as Osomatsu-san was when it was hyped
>>
>>9370177
I feel bad as I'm one of the many that posts YOI sales. I was wondering if there should be a group dedicated to just selling that series merch so it doesn't clog the sales group?
>>
Weird question but I'm getting a transfer at work to Korea. Would it be weird to use my Itabags there?
>>
>>9370177
Disable your notifications? I'm in the group but I've just stopped getting notifications so I can ignore everything for days at a time.

>>

I definitely think turning off my notifications would be the best bet, mostly because there's no reason to have a separate group just for them. I just hope that the people making these bags actually keep them, since there's already so many people selling all of their Osomatsu merch.
>>
>>9370352
I think YOI might have a little more staying power since it's getting a second season. But like every big hyped anime, the only ones who'll keep their bags are the ones who genuinely loved the show and not bandwagoners

I'm planning on making a Ryouma bag, and also a general Getter bag, but sadly plans and some merch are all I have for 'em right now. I want to do a custom bag for one or both with a window shaped like Getter 1's head, but I'm worried about how well it'll organization-wise for merch.

>>
>>9371272
Does anyone else think badge covers inside a window are a bit redundant? Like, the only damage that's likely to happen to things in a windowed bag is wear from rubbing up against the vinyl. And with buttons, they've already got clear plastic around them, so it really shouldn't affect them much.
I also think they look kinda tacky, but different strokes and all that.
>>
>>9371208
Someone's selling wigs? Why?
>>
>>9371366
It's common to layer badges on top of one another and even though it might seem like it's okay, the edges do scratch the surface after awhile. It also is just an extra protection in case of bad weather, any pin/badge coming undone that might damage the rest in the bag while you're walking around oblivously and for any spillage that might happen from inside the bag. Just a collector's mentality i guess. Also the fact that some badges can be worth TONS so a little bit more protection wouldn't hurt
>>
>>9371366
Metal can badges jiggling against acrylic straps can and do cause scratches on the acrylic. I also think they look kind of tacky, but I understand people being wary of damaging merchandise, especially for items expensive or hard to get. I've got my eye on a set of badges where scalper price is putting each individual badge at $45 USD, and you bet your ass I'm protecting those if I cave and actually buy them.
>>
I finally got my husbando's keychain! It took less than two weeks to get it delivered through SAL, which really surprised me. I can't wait to start making more polished shrink plastic charms so I can start actually assembling the itabag.

I'm more buttmad that local artists have stopped printing things for fandoms that were popular half a year ago. I'm trying to find ita bag merch for a pretty recent, popular show and it's boggling my mind how many items are now out of print in favor of even more YOI keychains.
>>
>>9371858
I don't really blame them. If you're making merch and putting your money into making it, you have to keep on trend to afford the costs. Most artists I see do trendy stuff with half of their merch and then the other half is dedicated to either their favorite fandoms or original art, whichever is their true passion. Neither of those sell as well as the hot new thing so catering to trends is what pays for the rest of it.
>>
>>9371858
What show? Artists probably still have stock of stuff from half a year ago, plus it has a good chance of being discounted.
>>
>>9371858
it's the same for physical stores

makoto itabags anon here. I love the look of the cute heart windows on mine but i also wish that there's more space to see more merch so i've always had urges to get this version of the bag too. Is that a backing and is it possible to insert a backing that fits the shape accurately? the heart ones are a bit of a squeeze but when inserted there's a bit of space on each side.
>>
>>9371858
as an artist, you should try messaging them to see if they have leftover stock they haven't sold. i often have one or two leftovers of a design i don't bother to bring to cons, that was set aside for maybe a tiny scratch on the back or simply misplaced.

More merch arrived today and more is on its way, so far I'm quite happy with my cushion! I think I'm going to purchase a big clear bag someday and put it in together with my plushies, so the whole world can witness my itaness...
>>
>>9372122
Yes, it is a backing made with stiff interfacing and then covered with fabric. Yes, it is possible to make a backing that fits precisely in the clear window bags. I know the problem you're speaking of with heart bags. Thankfully, you won't have that issue with these bags.

The reason there is some of the original bag showing through on mine is that some of my items are layered and 3D, so it pushes the backing back into the body of the bag. With my other bags, this isn't a problem as I only have flat items, so an accurate fit is possible. So, just something to keep in mind when making your own, to account for the depth of the merch you're putting in.

Here's a picture of someone's bag that has an accurate fit. IIRC, they used stiff felt and just cut it to shape.

>>9372206
Thank you! Yes, Sousuke merch is harder to find, but all of his items are so cute! I can't stop buying them either ha
>>
I know some of you will hate me for this but I'm looking for cute fanmade YoI charms (already preordere the cute official ones, the rest is either bland or ugly) except every artist I come across has already sold out everything. Any recs on artists that are restocking/have preorders open/still have cute Victuuri stuff left?
>>
Is there any etiquette to making custom buttons or other custom items? A lot of merchandise I want is unavailable by now because it's been some years and though I'm not into bagging so much as general merchandise, I'd like to have a bunch of buttons made with images I really like. However, I don't want to just rip images to satisfy my need to collect.
>>
>>9372515
use common sense and don't go around stealing art?
>>
>>9372515
Honestly, as long as you use official art you're fine.
>>
>>9372515
I asked this question a few threads ago and the consensus was don't use fanart without asking for permission first, but images from doujins you own are ok
>>
>>9372520
>images from doujins you own
Seeing how doujinkas don't want their work uploaded or even sold overseas usually I don't think that's a good idea.
>>
>>9372500
At the top of my head are these:

http://say0ran.tictail.com/product/yuri-on-ice-2-glitter-acrylic-charms

http://flanpu.tictail.com/

minorujoeling.com

http://nobledemons.tictail.com/

http://rachelhuey.tictail.com/

Try searching 'yuri on ice tictail' via google and 'yuri on ice' on etsy?
>>
>>9372528
But they do that for fear of repercussions from IP owners if the doujins spread too much. What if one were to directly cut out pictures from the doujin (not that I'd do something like that) ?
>>
>>9372549
I've had my own art passed around the Internet like hot potatoes. It's funny that people make money from fanworks without permission from the original companies by capitalizing on popular characters with what is, save for actual doujinshi books, mostly low-effort grabs for sweaty weeb dollars, then foam at the mouth. It's their work, but the subject matter isn't.

I wouldn't challenge someone to a blood duel over it, but that's just me. You do you. Cutting up a printed book is a horrifying thought.
>>
>>9372487
>Atsu bag with tiger backing
This is too cute for me to function
>>
>>9372557
Yeah, I'd never actually cut them up, I love them way too much for that (plus some were damn hard to find). What got me thinking was when I bought a doujin on BOOTH that was only available as a digital version. I got these pictures legally, and I'm not going to distribute them, so is it wrong to print a head shot of a character and make buttons out of it ? That's a bit of a dilemma
>>
>>9372596
You paid for the doujin. You're not printing it and making them into buttons with any intent to sell so that's perfectly reasonable. Don't overthink it.
>>
im asking again sorry i always miss the answers. but has anyone here ita'd there laptop. like on a shell that goes over it?

What are the biggest base bags available out there? As in, with the most space for merchandise? I seem to have gathered a whole lot of shit and I'd rather get to pile it all on one single glorious canvas than spread it across multiple bags.

Quick question, does anybody in the group host a Zakkamart group order? They have this new vinyl tote bag that I want but iirc they don't take international card
>>
>>9372759
I guess you could sticker the cover up with a fandom, pairing, or character? Most people won't go to the extent of hardcore deco with charms because you're lugging it around more frequently
>>
>>9373360
I'm the group order anon on the FB group! I'm not currently hosting one but I DO have a personal order going on through FJ right now so if you want to join in on that you're welcome to. I'll cover most of the shipping since it's mostly my stuff. Just send me a PM on FB if you're interested!
>>
Final update on my T2-bag before I finally move my ass to Japan (if anyone still remembers me, haha. Hit me up if yall coming to visit Chiba/Tokyo-area).
There's still some minor things to do like getting rid of wrinkles in the vinyl. I will fill the emptier side with new stuff while in Japan. The gloves turned out to be my favorite part but the vinyl is still wrinkly as all fuck on that side, so they don't really get to shine yet. Why can't T2 have engagement-rings too instead of cycling gloves.

kind of stupid question... but how do I explain itabag to my bf who may think is sad to have a husbando while being with him
spoiler alert, husbando is a real person (kpop trash)
>>
So I have this little glass treble clef.. thing. I think it's supposed to be a pendant but it doesn't have any sort of clasp.
It fits the character that I'm making an ita bag for, and I want to attach it to the outside of the bag, but I can't think of how. Without hotglueing it, I guess that's last resort.
>>
>>9373575
Probably not ideal to flaunt that in front of him, to be honest.
>>
>>9373575
For one I wouldn't use the term husbando. Just say that you really enjoy his music and want to support him as a fan. Most guys have female idols and actresses they love too.
>>
>>9373557
this layout is great! It doesnt feel extremely busy and this works best for acylic keychains imo
>>
>>9373575
Don't make itabags out of real people. It's fucking creepy and weird.
>>
>>9373589
Well he has mentioned jokingly that he finds I spend too much time fangirling, so maybe the itabag would be seen as the cherry on the cake.
We are moving in together so is going to be even more difficult to have fan merch.
>>
>>9373557
You could try putting some sort of border around the gloves to highlight them, since dark gray on black isn't the most visible.

>>9373579
Does it have holes where the loops of the clef are, or is it completely solid? Because if it's got holes and you can get a jump ring or something through them like that, you can pin it down with those
>>
>>9373621
It has holes but the clef itself is pretty thick.
I'm gonna try to fit a jump ring on there. Thanks for the suggestion.
>>
I think it would help to have drawn, not realistic pictures, of your husbando like this >>9369855 or this >>9369855 rather than actual pictures >>9369846. It doesn't change that they're real people, but having it stylized like a "cartoon" can help it seem less worship-y.

As for your bf finding it sad, well, there isn't much you can do other than relate it to something he really likes? Is he a weeb or a normie? If he's a weeb, he should easily understand. Assuming he's a normie, relate it to being a big fan and supporting them, like groupies tend to do (but not as drastic). >>9373589 said it well.

>>9373618
Also, I find is disheartening that you feel like you should have to limit your fanmerch. I know this isn't a relationship thread, but what you're doing is harmless, other than your wallet, and a serious partner should be supportive. Maybe not crazy about it, but happy that you're happy.
>>
>>9373557
Are the little mocha plushes safe and secure there? I've lost so many things due to ball chains that I don't trust them anymore. Don't want the cute little T2's to go missing.
It always makes me happy to see your bag so thanks for posting again, anon.
>>
>>9373575
Don't frame it as a mark of your extreme devotion to a husbando - talk about it like a collection hobby. You like to collect k-pop merchandise the same way other people collect baseball cards or model trains. Itabags just have the added bonus of being functional, so you get to use all this stuff you spent money on instead of just locking it away in a box somewhere.

And I'm seconding the opinions elsewhere that if you're serious e about this guy enough to be moving in together, then he really should be able to appreciate the joy you get from hobbies even if he doesn't understand them.
>>
>>9373755
He is very supportive, but I can notice some sadness when I'm in fan mode.
I will consider the collectionism aspect. Maybe start with a more general fandom and then it will be more natural. As others say, maybe not real people.
>>
>>9373715
Thank you for your concern and compliments anon! It really makes my day.
I'm confident that the ball chains will hold, since I always put hot glue inside the chain's "lock". It may seem weird, but it essentially just prevents the chain from opening accidentally. Hot glue is easy to pick out with a needle or a toothpick if the chain needs to be opened later. I've been doing this for years with keychains and have never lost anything! Pic related.

>>9373591
>>9373621
Thanks anons! I might try putting the gloves on a different background to make them stand out more, thanks for suggesting that.

I don't think there was anything "legal" about it

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/6718706/Japanese-man-marries-computer-game-character.html

It says a priest ran the ceremony but there's a lot of places in Japan that are just tiny chapels for couples to take western style wedding photos with a white guy 'priest' and the real marriage is just a civil town hall thing. Family registries, or koseki, are very serious business in Japan and no one would ever let that kind of thing fly.

tldr; The wedding and reception were a niconico event so it was just for entertainment

If you saw someone with a bunch of shota merch on their ita bag, would you get creeped out? None of the images are sexual, but the characters are underaged and have that shota appeal.
>>
>>9374749
Not at all. If there are no sexual images I'll just assume the person with the bag really likes their favourite Ra*bits boy or thinks Killua is super neat. Are you planning a bag for a shota character yourself and feeling insecure? Just go for it, if you like a character enough to make an itabag, don't let the small handful of people who are going to judge them for being young stop you.
>>
>>9374749
It's just drawings of cartoon characters, ain't that gonna hurt anyone. Nothing bad about shota (or loli for that matter) as long as people know the difference between fiction and reality.

The guide ain't very well located on the group page to be fair. It really should have a pinned post with big bold text saying to read it.

Speaking of the FB group guide, am I the only one who doesn't like that it's just ours? I wouldn't mind if it didn't have the board name on it, but I don't really like throwing 4chan stuff out into regular ol social media space.

These are button-bags (or con-bags) that were popular in the 2000's with congoers. If anything they're like the earliest generation of itabags in the West but they're not actually itabags.

>>

So I'm hosting an Itabag panel at a con coming up, any advice? What kinds of topics would you reccommend other then just the basics? (I.e different Itabags, where to buy stuff, how to use a shipping service, how to tell bootleg from legit, and etc....)

>>9377376
Some ideas/methods for handmade merch would probably be good for people who like things without a ton of it. Touching on how making your bags/ covers for existing bags is an option too would be another good thing to inclus in my opinion. I get the impression most people don't know that you can buy clear vinyl to use in sewing projects aside from hardcore crafters.

I've got a pass case on the Den-O (left) one and the keyring was on the longer side but I wanted to have it hang vertically so I put some thread through the back of it (through the hole that you slide your card in with your finger) and safety pinned the thread loop. Mostly on taobao, though I think most of what I have is already sold out since they go pretty quickly. You can search 假面骑士鎧武 plus one of the following: 挂件 (strap) 亚克力 (acrylic) 钥匙扣 (keyring) for some good stuff.

I visit these shops the most:
https://daodaohetao.taobao.com/
https://kufufufu.taobao.com/

Some of the charms are still available here: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z0k.7386009.0.0.CGNvfu&id=521372888501&_u=410du4oj2e05
http://scorpionstar.storenvy.com/products/11449563-sale-kamen-rider-gaim-keychains

Searching 仮面ライダー鎧武 なりきり on surugaya/mandarake/etc for mini belts and weapons could also work. Also, mercari/yja also has some badges/coasters from the Kamen Rider Diner (I find that mercari tends to have more listings for them).

I reckon you could make a bag with lockseeds and fake vines though that would be pretty cool. You could also use Sengoku Driver face plates?

Hopefully this helps. Sorry the post got a bit long haha.

It's a medium sized con? I suspect maybe 40-50 people will be there. But oh good idea to include some of the more diy aspects of itabagging~

I personally have never done some of them but I can point people in the right direction and I do sew othersize so I wouldn't be hard to fake it ether.

ANON MY BOY. SOME GOOD SHIT HERE AND PEAK TASTE.
If you were ever to get a backpack in future, Id suggest a black one. Amazing though, I've seen a few Precure bags, now Kamen Rider, we're only missing Sentai and Super Hero Time is prepped.
>>
My paycheck came in, so I preordered more charms. I'm so fucked, I have no where left to put these on my base bag. But if I miss buying them I know I'll regret it.
>>
>>9377861
>But if I miss buying them I know I'll regret it.
I hate this so much about this hobby. When rare merch pops up for a good price, you just have to buy it then. If you miss it, not only will there be regret, but you'll have to pay a higher price later. But damn is itabagging fun.

This came up in another thread but I totally loved the idea of making an ita bag for a celebrity from within a show to go with a cosplay. For example a Mable cosplayer carrying a Sev'ral Timez ita bag.

Is it just me, or is this getting close to "who should I cosplay?" territory. Just make a bag of things you love enough to have a portable shrine of and wanting to dump a shitton of money into.

It wouldn't bother me if she had a list of characters and needed help narrowing it down or if she wanted advice on which ones had the best/most merch. As it is it really rubs me the wrong way.

Do people sell already made bags? Or like... take commissions on bags? I would actually like to have one (or two or three) for stuff I love, but I've found myself really stuck with the design aspect; I'm just not that creative.
>>
>>9378178
Like already decked out with the merch? I've seen a few for auction on Yahoo Japan..

Does seem to defeat the purpose though.
>>
>>9378178
I have seen people selling full bags, yeah. You can just take everything off and rearrange it, I don't see the issue.
>>
>>9378181
Not really in the itabag spirit, I guess? I'm just really worried that if I put together a bag on my own it's going to be shitty and underwhelming, and I'm trying to figure out if there's an option to like... pay someone to help me, I guess. Like a personal shopper, but for itabag items

I've seen someone selling their Jyushimatsu bag on ebay. While I do think it's kinda counter-intuitive, someone could always rearrange the stuff, add their own merch/remove stuff that was on already on it, and other stuff. It basically could be treated as a big-ass starter pack.

That, and they weren't selling it for cheap, so the wallet ita was still there.

I don't think that's gonna stop them anon. I've been seeing quite a few bootleg bags lately in the group. If you have specific questions, such as, "Is the symmetry of my bag ok? Would this base bag color work with this merch? I'm looking for a tote bag that has x and y qualities", etc. versus "Where do I buy a base bag? How do I order from Japan? Is it ok if I make a bag of xyz?". I see no problem in asking questions for improvement.

What's your favorite proxy for buying multiple things off auction sites(mbok, yahoo jp auction etc)? Looking for the least fees possible.
>>
>>9379352
I used to use Buyee but I recently switched to From Japan to help curb my tendency to bid without consideration to the amount I'm spending since FJ requires an upfront deposit before bidding.
>>
>>9378178 here
First semi-dumb questions, since y'all seem genuinely okay with it: how do you find your inspiration for the design of a bag, more than just fill available space with merch; I mean like modifying/adding decorations the bag itself, or deciding to add flowers or lights. I'm particularly fond of >>9377221 but how did you even decide to do that?
Also, I'm trying to make sure I understand: from what I've read it seems like bootleg merch is considered less than ideal (I agree), but the knockoff base bags aren't considered in bad taste?
>>
>>9379564
>Also, I'm trying to make sure I understand: from what I've read it seems like bootleg merch is considered less than ideal (I agree), but the knockoff base bags aren't considered in bad taste?

I'm not thrilled about knock off bags, but imo it's because people buying fake bags is just a sign of being too cheap or dumb to use a proxy, while bootleg merch actively goes against the spirit of an itabag (showing love for something). After all, how much can you really like something if, in a hobby about spending, you try to take shortcuts?

The line is iffier if its super old stuff or if the company won't rerelease it and the prices are stupidly high for that reason (like the two hisoka anons that bought those rubber straps), but there's no excuse for say, yuri on ice.
>>
>>9379564
Knock-off bags are more accepted since it's harder to copyright a design. Like a plain coloured tote bagged in vinyl isn't exactly super original. Merch, on the other hand, features artwork. Theft is obvious when artwork is being ripped off. I would agree that the heart WEGO bags are pretty iconic though, and cheap enough that I don't understand why people buy knock-off of those.

As for how to find inspiration, well, how do you find inspiration for anything? Look at what people already did. Look at the world around you. How can you incorporate cool things you see into an itabag? Just be creative, anon.
>>
>>9379564
I think of the the knockoff bags are more like babies first itabag? They're easy to get and easy to use. They don't know any better.
>>
>>9379352
I use zenmarket, it's got the same deposit system as FJ mentioned here >>9379432 and doesn't force you to use any of their insurance plans (unlike FJ)
>>
im sure this question comes up a ton, but I've been having awful luck- does anyone know where I could find a nice selection of the MOVIC bears and such? does anyone have them in stock? and are there any alternatives behind bear/bunny (I'd really love a wolf but I haven't seen it so I doubt it.

A lot of experimenting and playing around. Sometimes there's certain elements that works and somethings that don't. I know I've played around with my own bag at least 7 times before I was finally satisfied with where it's at now

T&B anon here, my FromJapan order arrived! All the doujin made it in once piece and the only bad experience I have from all of this is the mild horror of finding three of them with stickers plastered right onto the cover. I'm hoping I can find a way to safely remove them but otherwise, everything else arrived in one piece and undamaged.

Uh.. I guess I'll go read them and if anyone happens to want scans I'll post them in /cm/ and /y/ depending on the rating. I've got a mix of beautiful artwork ones and pure 18+ crack.

hey guys, i'm a bit of an ita bag noob right now, but i'm looking to begin my first ita bag sometime soon as I purchased a lot of merch for it already! :D problem is, i don't have a base bag! i generally prefer backpacks over tote bags and the heart/star/Xshape WEGO bags don't appeal to me very much because the window is rather small and I'd like to display a decent amount of merch in my bag.
