Another thought on the matter is probably that all the better skilled cosplayers have long since moved on to more challenging projects. There's only really so much you can do with Homestuck before it gets to shitty crossovers and fancytier.

You tell me. I guess for me personally, I just have friends in HS in a way I don't in other fandoms. I have a love for the characters I'm having a difficulty finding in other places.

Also worth noting is that once you're far enough down the rabbit hole, you start comparing everything else to these unreachable standards that HS set up for you.

Also there's just SO MUCH material like you could cosplay one Homestuck character a month and be set for literal years. It's easy sticking to it.

With that said, branching out is very rewarding. You never realize how mych bile people have for HS until you cosplay from another fandom and people don't give you the stinkeye.

But yeah, this is my home now, I guess.

I never do anything in small amounts, so i've just, never left Homestuck. And I have responsibilities in this fandom, I guess. I still write fic, I still herd around a gaggle of nerds at just about any Ontario con.

I think quality has dropped so much partially because of the older fandom members moving on to other fandoms and using what they've learned elsewhere. Hell, even CBC is hardly cosplaying homestuck anymore, and look how incredible their new cosplays are for other fandoms.

There are less people who are good nowdays because there are less people overall. It was so much easier to pick out the godtier level cosplayers in a line of great cosplayers, when that line was 20 people long at every shoot. Now, when you're comparing 'Pretty Good' to 'Babby's First Grey', the pretty good is kind of disappointing because there's still only a handful up there, and you're mostly just happy to see clean cosplay and nice makeup.

It's the Homestuck Bell Curve, of sorts. There are a lot of people in fandom who have been in a few years now, and are past their awful unsealed greypaint and buckets phase. They're learning and steadily improving, and that's been nice to see.

The lack of drama has been nice, but I feel part of that is because there hasn't been as many people around to report it. I mean, there are a few bad eggs now- we've seen them. But not nearly the heaps of garbage personalities that we had in the past.

hey guys. sorry for not being homestuck related, but i'd like to ask some horn advice since you're the pros. What material should I go for pic related? I was thinking probably model magic, since it has got to be light to stick to my forehead, but what should I coat it in to make sure the spirit gum doesn't dissolve it? Also, since the trident seems to be made of the same material would using model magic for that too be a bad idea?

Model magic is too heavy if you don't have a headband. Get insulation foam and cover with a lightweight clay such as paperclay. OR, since you'll be attaching it straight to your skin, cover it in latex.

I'd say Freeform Air clay, it's definitely the lightest of all the clays I've ever used for horns. May be able to just get away with sealing it (modge podge or wood glue) for spirit gum, brush on latex is hard to smooth.

Barstuck is hard to miss- there's a good sized bar right below the gazebo. You can see it when you walk past gaylords reception area. You can't miss it. It'll be super crowded come Friday night, but we tend to take over a little area. And we're easy to spot because gray paint.

There is definitely a drawmeet and photoshoot locations post going around. Orangelemonart is hosting, so they've got that up on tumblr.

As a Homestuck in my 20s I would really like to experience a barstuck, but most people in my community are below drinking age, and the ones who aren't are against alcohol/doesn't care for it. While I get that you can't force anyone to do something they don't want to, it gets kind of frustrating that the only people who seem to be into the whole thing live a 15-20-something hours by plane from here.

This weekend actually had quite a few good cosplays. There were a handful that were incredible, like that godtier tavros with the fancy wings, but most of the cosplays were well done.
Lots of nice details and creative ideas- I can't find a decent picture yet but one of the Tavros cosplayers had a fiduspawn kigu that was pretty cute. And ghostbusters Roxy was adorable.

While we're sharing names, I wanted to take a moment to bid my adieus from this trip.

It's been very clear these past threads that the list has probably served it's purpose - threads run slowly and with smaller numbers of participants. Homestuck cosplay has found different forums and shapes than it had three years ago. It was also just not a lot of fun crunching through this time. Even if there was a lot of fun new names that came up (which was a delight to see), it just felt more like a chore, especially when I didn't feel justified adding my own thoughts and commentary.

Most of you seemed to appreciate Instaanons reports more this year, for which I don't blame you at all! And I definitely think there's a place for presenting new names to follow.

(Though I would recommend that Instaanon look a bit more carefully at dates and try and present a better overview; Shiftinghide barely cosplayed Homestuck at all in 2016 and judging by their account they're rapidly moving towards anime exclusively. This was also something I noted when I crunched your first round of names so keep an eye on that.)

The list is only useful insofar as it sparks discussion. This years' list didn't. Crunchys presence in these threads in general has been pure poison as of late, and while there was a time it was very useful it currently isn't. We can recommend and discuss cosplayers without ranking them and making a whole thing about it. Threads move slower and recommendations won't get lost as quickly.

Insta anon here. I could step up, but I also don't want my word to be law, type thing. Crunchy had some good crit for me, and I know I tossed some at them a ways back about missing cosplays and not knowing when cosplays were first worn vs when they were posted to instagram.

I'd like to have a chance to really look at both instagram and tumblr for each cosplayer and actually talk about them for more than a 3 line summary. There are still a steady 30 something posters in here on a regular basis. That's enough to get discussion, and hold it.

nah, it's not bad. if you feel comfy putting some fakes in, or even just stuffing a friend's bra that you put on, that's fine.

If I can try my hardest to bind my 36Gs, you can put some cookies (are they still even called that?) in a bra and go for it. Vriska's in a tshirt anyway, no ones going to see you don't have real tits under there.

There's a vriska in my local comm who gives themselves some boobs when they wear her. Looks great- they're prolly the best vriska in the group of us.

Hips I wouldn't worry too much about. stick-thin vriska is a widely accepted headcanon, and people generally are looking there less because it's not a consistent thing across genders.

It's an odd combo of a board format made for anonymity and a fandom where most of us will recognize each other. There's like two people who regularly self post (Baddy and Torontostuck), a handful of people doing tag dumps, and the rest chiming in with the occasional commentary but without much actual discussion going on. Selfposting and asking for advice will usually at least generate conversation, but it gets dull when it's the same people over and over. With so few people left in the fandom at cgl, anonymity is getting much more difficult to maintain.

How long have people frequented this general anyway? I've been here since 2012, I just realized.

crossplayer from last thread here. did you try my suggestion about doing a half swallow? Its tough to maintain for walking around but easy to pull off with practice for photos. I also wear breastforms with a bra, although I dont cosplay anything that shows off cleavage.

What ideas do you guys have on making trickster trolls not awful? A friend is pushing doing trickster trolls at an upcoming con and I want to get some input on what's good and what's bad before I say yes to this. Said friend also wants to change the trolls' signs into the literal representations of the zodiac (like crab for cancer) but I felt it deviated away too much to really be considered trickster. Should their symbols be kept as they are or should they be changed in some way like the kids?

It's a really awkward mix of fancy and casual, though. Like, throw on some applique and borders and call it fancy-level. I recognize it's (based on) the Rumminov design which isn't great to begin with, but when you make it in super casual fabric it really just looks weird.

I took a look at my horns recently and yeah, while I prefer the aesthetic of textured horns vs smooth clay ones, they are a bit more uneven in places than i'd like. I was debating on giving them a re-make at some point when I start on my Latula, so I'm thankful for the feedback pointing me in the right direction.

Yeah, I usually wear a stud and then shoop it out from photos when going to cons or doing shoots. I'd take it out completely, but nostril piercings tend to heal up in 20-30 minutes, and I've already made that mistake before desu.

I also find that the clay horns can be a bit less robust than how I've made mine (tin foil base, string/yarn wrap, paper maché over the top, then paint). However, I'll look into combining the two processes to make something that looks a bit better and holds its ground.

Of course it's completely your choice, and you should cosplays how you want. But I've pretty much never seen yarn horns that have looked great. Same goes for textured, but I bet it's possible to do that well enough.

Toothblack... works, depending on how you smile. Both my rows of teeth are visible when I smile (my upper row is entirely exposed) so if I use tooth black it just looks weird and like I've a big gap. Most fanart that isn't realism will exaggregate the fins because stylization, it's just that people ingrain this into their interpretation and fail to realize how it'll translate into reality.

Not related to the current topic on here but a thing was brought to my attention recently regarding Hiveswap

The thought of some big name youtubers getting their hands on it and playing it, and somehow getting interested in reading Homestuck and suddenly the fandom is revived by a bunch of screaming 11 year olds coming here from whatever lets player decided to put ther gross hands on Hiveswap

Honestly their teeth aren't that bad, or that yellow. I find that painting yourself grey will, for whatever reason, REALLY make any discoloration of your teeth stand out. Her teeth are probably just "normally" discolored and it's the grey making it look absurd.

On the topic of Kanaya reinterpretations.

I feel like I rarely see Kanaya done straight; it's almost always some shortened skirt or super poofy whatever or remade shirt situation. Periodicallypapaya and Pearlgirl are the only ones which comes to mind.

anyway, it's because a lot of the people who cosplay kanaya are too lazy to get every detail down, so instead of doing her accurately they go out of their way to do some 'reinterpretation' that makes absolutely no sense. it's a shame, her base design's pretty cute

I'm still pissed he went so long without a single update for people who paid quite a long ass time ago for this thing to get made. The fandom has crescendoed and died already (not entirely sure but it's a sham of what it is) and there's still nothing out not even a demo.

I miss the fandom though. If it had ended differently (Seriously i hate the ending. So shitty. So phoned in.) i would probably still have been into it and excited but Hussie let too many people have a hand in the story. Half of them are relatively recent (up to about a year) the other half are scourged from old threads. I think quality is relatively consistent; it's just more apparent when you do long term dumps.

I mean, they weren't really allowed to talk about the issues thanks to court shit with the settlement or whatever, which is what people would have demanded anyway. The small updates I seen were usually from the few artists working on it saying 'yeah we're swamped', but nothing on official places because hussie has sort of noped out of his Internet presence.
Not that I can entirely blame him- it was to the point where he couldn't go out for fast food without your average burger joint worker recognizing him. And he's a shut-in, quiet guy who really doesn't seem all that extroverted to begin with.

Of course I don't expect Hussie to say all those things. But a monthly update with at least a picture of like "this is what we've been working on," would've been better than literally radio silence.

It was obvious the game wasn't going to come out in January when they stopped giving updates again months before that. In this case, no news is bad news.

You misread what I said. The silence during the settlement made sense. However AFTER they announced the settlement to the backers, they still continued to dip into months on end of silence before eventually revealing that due to development issues they were scrapping a bunch of work and moving to 2d. These were two unrelated issues, and the last years' worth of missing updates cannot be justified by the fact that they went to court at one point in time.

IIRC one of the development staffers tweeted a bunch of updates about why the project failed without actually naming names. The problem was that they created all of the 2d assets and artwork before even developing a 3d level to test on. And then after all that work was done they discovered the layouts and assets would not work with the engine, so they essentially had to start over. Her main point was that people with no experience in running a video game project should not be in charge of timelines.

I also know someone who used to have ties to staff, and that fits in exactly right with the type of progress he'd sometimes mention to me.
