This fashion may be dead but in my heart it will live on.

Or rather, how do we create productive gyaru threads for those of us trashy gulls still into this?

Looking around at some other small fashion threads (like the fairy kei one and the mori girl one), I feel that gyaru generals would be better if we had more content links/guides/hauls/selfposts?

While Gyaru isn't nearly as big as lolita is in terms of online presence, gyaru brands far outnumber other street style brands in terms of stores and accessibility. There's definitely an audience for this style still, even if it's changed from it's core (more simplified, and lots of onee/himekaji).
>>
>>9347788
It feels so weird when people say that it is dead. It's just not a trend anymore. There are still many gyaru out there in Japan, wearing heavier styles, there are even gyaru in korea and other Asian countries.
>>
>>9347788
Thing I don't get about "Gyaru is dead, mourn the passing of Gyaru, it is lost to us now" is that... To me, at least, as an outsider looking in, Gyaru seems to be more about how you coordinate jfashion pieces then having specific "Gyaru" pieces. The style is still possible to recreate with currently available clothing, if that's what you want to wear.
>>
I agree with >>9347811 that in order to keep conversation alive there has to be new content.

As a baby gal, I'd like to help but I feel like I can't provide much at
the moment. I'll try to post hauls and reviews when I get them (I've been into Jfashion and western designers for years so I can at least judge quality).

Question for more experienced gyaru: where are you shopping these days? it seems like a lot of the old mainstays are out of business or switching to larme/normie fashion.
>>
>>9347816
>>9347828
Well, it's not dead-dead, that's why I also wrote >>9347811. Gyaru isn't dead as a fashion but in western social media I see very little of it. Nowadays there are people into jfashion who don't know LIZ Lisa which seemed to be the most popular gyaru brand in the west.

>>9347855
Dang, nice haul anon. Especially loving those rings!
>>
I love lurking these threads, but I end up wearing himekaji because I can't do the make. I need more practice, but I still love all the tutorials. Any that anons have to drop would be appreciated.
>>
>>9347915
I mean there's nothing stopping you from buying gyaru coordinates and wearing them with normie make-up. I wouldn't call it gyaru or tag it as such, but no one is going to run up to you in the street and call you out for being a bad gal. that being said, gyaru makeup can be a lot easier to put on and wear than expected once you get a lot of practice in. I'd give it a try!!! just love what you love anon.
>>
>>9347915
Gyaru makeup really isn't all that difficult, there are two important steps:
1- getting your eyeshape right
2- having decent lashes (and you really can't go wrong with the popular diamond lash lines like glamorous eye and angel eye)

Invest in the former and then practise the latter until you git gud.
>>
>>9347915
>i end up wearing himekaji since I can't do the make.

Then it's not himekaji? But just you wearing liz lisa (most likely) clothes.
Himekaji refers not only to the 'casual princess clothes', but also to the makeup? Which is supposed to still be heavy but in a more decent way than hime?
>>
>>9347942
I thought himekaji was a lighter make? Is that not true?
>>
>>9347955
Himekaji has different makeup, but it's definitely not normie or even "light." it's more casual and girly in appearance, but I'd still say it requires false lashes and a gyaru shape.
>>
>>9347990
I see. Feel free to post some examples, I was always under the impression it was Liz Lisa's current makeup trend.
>>
>>9347997
If you couldn't tell over the frequent cunt-offs over Liz Lisa in previous thread, it's not really a gyaru thing anymore.
>>
>>9347997
>>9348061
This isn't helpful, anon. OP: Liz Lisa, and even himekaji has kind of broken away from what people consider gyaru. LL makeup these days is more toned down, and this season straight up Larme.

I'll post pics and tutorials when I get home. I'm on mobile and don't have my inspo folder.
>>
>>9348064
Right, I understood that LL was moving away from gyaru, that's why I thought it was himekaji make. I definitely appreciate any references you have though anon. The makeup is where I struggle.

I agree with this. Even back before the so-called "death" of gyaru, I really had issues finding help with the fashion for newcomers. I think the style could easily live on for westerners, but there does need to be more links and help. I think an updated gyaru store list would be the best of all.

In a way.
It's going against the Japanese beauty standards -- being free, showing off your body, dyeing your hair and sometimes tanning. In a way, yes, that's unjapanese, but you can even apply it to our culture where women are either seen as sex symbols or just trashy whores for doing so. Gyaru is, essentially, a very feminist fashion, as it's just a big 'fuck you' to men.
>>
>>9348750
For me it seems more like a big 'fuck me' to men.
>>
>>9348754
Depends on how the gal herself decides to use it, but you have to look at it as that in Japan, a girl being 'slutty,' and open about her sexuality is greatly frowned upon (and here too)
>>
>>9348754
Gyaru have quite a reputation of "bitches" and are generally too wild seeming or party girls for most Japanese men. A "fuck me" to Japanese men would be to pander to them with black hair, pale skin, and the stereotypical innocent schoolgirl look.
>>
>>9348754
in some cases. you have 2 types of gal mottos "get wild, be sexy" is one of them, where it is all about having fun, so yeah, also fun with guys

the other is more of a "lets go crazy" where, fuck society, fuck men, fuck all these expectations, I will do whatever the fuck i want
>>
>>9348691
I check in with her now and again. She seems to post less often, and it's less gyaru specific but I'm amazed she's still there. Her and lizziebee just keep trucking on, it's impressive.
>>
>>9348758
As a queer gyaru, I can attest to the second one. It's less of a "be sexy for men!!" thing for me and more of a "fuck you I'm going to take up space and be showy and steal your girl" kind of thing.

people love to say that western society sexualizes women, but they typically get very fussy when girls choose to wear "sexy" clothes themselves.
>>
>>9348735
>>9348750
>>9348769
Let's not forget that like other j-fashions it started as more of a movement, but it evolved into a clear cut style. It has a certain aesthetic and isn't necessarily about being half naked and bitchy.

Right? It sounds.. pretty childish, but it's like, both empowering and funny to me. I regularly go out with my 2000s-era thong peaking out of my D.I.A shorts and crop top and shit, and people flip their lids. It's so funny how their first response is basically
>have some respect for yourself
Yeah? I went through years and years of hating myself. Expressing myself with sexy clothes is fun for me. I go to school and work like any other normal person, I just choose to have fun in my own way.

I used to really like the sexier styles for that same reason, but now I'm really enjoying how much attention I don't get when I go out in my comfy amekaji jeans and sneakers. Walking around London in tsuyome is enough to make you want to put men in concentration camps, they're fucking disgusting. Once I nearly got in a fight during a meet because this Italian retard wouldn't leave a >>>>>sixteen year old<<<<<< attendee alone because she was wearing d.i.a.

>>
Can someone do an updated list on the sub-fashions of gyaru and a small summary? Also, what is even most in fashion right now? Is there any trends to note?
>>
>>9349854
Quick list of fashions that are still active in some way either in japan or internationally:

>onee
>himekaji
>amekaji
>tsuyome/kuro/96gal
>rokku
>goshikku
>agejo
>bohemian/saike
>oraora
>kogal

Dead styles:
>bgal
>manba/banba/ganguro/all that
>hime

The most popular right now is definitely onee gal, brands such as Delyle Noir, Datura, Emilia Wiz etc put out clothes that are popular with both gals and trendy/glamorous Japanese women in general. Floral hem prints, fluffy coats and fluffy knits continue to be a big deal. It's been a big deal since 2014 or so and it's pretty boring by now but nothing new seems to be taking its place yet.
>>
>>9349866
>hime is dead
How are brands like Jesus Diamante doing then? I always thought hime was such an interesting style. What was the sort of "subculture" behind hime, anyway? Wasn't it being kind of like a rich girl?
Like the other posts have mentioned here, it wasn't sort of wild and carefree quite like normal gyaru was.

Also, is himekaji still strong? I feel like brands like Liz Lisa have opted to ride the Larme wave a bit instead.
>>
>>9349854
tokyo is very onee, osaka is pretty much oraora as far as I know, rokku and himekaji type styles are more bangya? (correct me if im wrong)
>>
>>9349866
Manba is still around, especially among the gals which flock around BD and Vstyle it has a small reneissance.

I think hime got mixed with agejo and living doll style as there a lot of girls going full plastic surgery and wearing mars and lizmelo or old la pafait pieces

>>
>>9350078
i guess its pretty much tsuyome? dia did a lot of that 2 years ago?
>>
>>9349876
Himekaji was eaten alive by larme, imo. LL was the last holdout and even they are starting to jump ship. Old himekaji brands like Amavel, Ank Rouge, DreamV etc are all larme staples at this point
>>
>>9349876
http://neojaponisme.com/2012/02/28/the-history-of-the-gyaru-part-one/

Read these posts, they're a great summary of gyaru culture and how different styles fit into it. The hime gals are from the same branch as the original kogals, genuinely rich stylish girls who like blowing money on expensive clothes and handbags, whereas your 'trashy' styles like manba, tsuyome etc come from the later branch of less affluent highschool girls who were emulating the rich girls. Gyaru very much has a split history like that, which is why there is so much argument about what is and isn't gyaru.

Has anyone bought bulk / hauls from Y!Japan or the like? I'm looking at some "selling my closet" type hauls that are listed with 3-5 60 size boxes--which from what I understand are like 20x20x20 cm boxes. How much is that going to cost me in shipping?? And traditionally do these include what in the photo or just random stuff? I've never used bought jfashion in bulk before, but this seems to be a common thing on jauction sites. Thought it might be a good way to pick up a gyaru closet?
>>
>>9350238
shipping is gonna eat you alive
>>
>>9350238

You need to read the description carefully. Sometimes it'll include everything in photos, but sometimes it'll also say "this is just a sample, minimum will include a dress and jsk", in which case you should price your bid knowing you may be getting rather crappy items.

The one you want to be wary of is when the seller says "pictures are just a sample" and doesn't a set a minimum of what the lot contains, some lolita once received a handful of secondhand normie clothing and a half-used bottle of nail polish. They can get away with it because they didn't set a minimum for what will be delivered.

You should also be prepared that the boxes may contain things that are ripped or stained beyond repair; a lot of bulk used kimonos are only 50% useable, the other 50% is generally too stained, worn or ripped for any kind of repair at all-- the seller generally knows it's going to be tough getting rid of that 50%, that's why they're selling it as a lot together with the decent stuff and leave it to you to figure it out.

tl;dr: they're a good deal, but caveat emptor. And yes, shipping will eat you alive even if you SAL it.

Repeating that shipping is going to eat you alive. Tenso/Buyee's shipping calculator is fairly accurate (even if they're not the shoping service you use). Carefully comb through the description and the seller's feedback, and to get a basic idea of weight, I use emiii-chan's "past tenso orders" page (they won't let me link but you can google it). She posts weight/fees/shipping costs per order so you can use that to get an estimate of how heavy your package will be.

It's pretty similar to himekaji, so you're going to want Liz Lisa and Ankh Rouge I think. Lots of nice stuff on yumetenbo in the past too, though I don't know what their current stock is like.

Yeah mostly.
It's a much more casual looking hime, like easily daily wearable, and as the name may imply it's very girly, lots of soft colours, florals, roses, and such.
It's still going pretty strong although it seems most girls who dress as such don't classify it as Roma guard anymore and just think of it as normal casual wear.- from what I've seen personally at least

So how is everyone dealing with the fact that there aren't many gyaru-trends anymore, but gyaru used to be such a trend based fashion? Are you just giving up on trends are wearing what suits you or are you looking elsewhere for trends to work into gyaru?

I personally am trying to do the later more. Pic related: I want to give subtle pastel hair a try
>>
>>9353870
I'm really just making shit up and combining my own ideas with what I see in Soul Sister and Egg (old mags ofc). I'm not super adventurous but it works and doesn't feel like I'm sticking to the old trend religiously. I don't knock people who do that because they tend to look great, but I don't think that way of doing things offers much future for the style.
>>
>>9353968
I keep meaning to add this to the end of my posts- anyone feel like posting their most recent codes? I don't mind posting if others will, would be cool to see what people wear on here- with the caveat hat gyaru is a small community so if you're active online you will probably be recognised

It gets their peepee hard because they can't get any girl probably.

Omg gal mamas , feeling so nostalgic.
Did anybody else used to read the gal mama magazines just to see the cute pics of stylish moms and daughters/sons?
Sometimes there would be the jackpot and it would be whole gal family, husband and all!
I'm not even a parent myself and kinda don't want kids but those pics would kill me with how adorable and stylish they were.
>>
>>9356132
They make me feel so much better about being 24 (where the Lolitas make me feel practically dead)
>>
>>9356231
Elaborate more? What was the idea behind gal mamas, other than just being gals that wanted to be moms? Was it about growing older in gal?

I also agree it's sad lolita has nothing like that.
>>
>>9356243
Not that anon but:
There were specific magazines tailored to gyaru moms in Japan, where there would be street snaps and instead of just gyaru girls it was gyaru girls and their kids / families and they would always dress their kids up to be similar styles or even matching and it was adorable.
A lot of the articles mixed in parenting type things and gyaru related things so it's like the best of both worlds, in a way showed you didn't have to change yourself jus because you had a child ( sometimes more than one I loved the snaps of girls and their twins or 2 children all coordinated together as a family)
I think that's what anon meant, it was very inclusive and didn't just pretend moms who were into gal didn't exist and instead gave them their own spotlight not making you feel like "guess I should get out of the style now that I am older and/or have a kid" .
>>
>>9356267
Gal moms mostly aren't even old. In Japan birth control is still something very special. So especially among gals, who are mostly drop outs (school and so with society wise) the teenage mom rate was or still IS very high. It's not very uncommon in Japan that there's a 14yo single mom
>>
>>9356267
I'm >>9356231 and you pretty much got it. Even though all the girls featured might not literally be my age, it's nice to see a magazine that doesn't pretend like you can only be pretty when you are young and single and have no responsibilities. You can still dress cute and "adult"... it's not mutually exclusive.

on a more superficial note, they also remind me of western wine moms in the early 2000s who still worked out and wore makeup and sexy clothes. women with a kinda desperate housewives type vibe. I just like knowing you can be interesting at all stages in life.

I'm also curious as to how brands like La Pafait are doing. I browse their webshop every so often, and so many of their dresses are about the same price as Angelic Pretty or BTSSB. Surely they'll need to lower their prices/liquidate pretty soon, because they haven't adapted to larme. Or maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part, because I've been thirsty AF for some La Pafait but can't justify the price

That's why I added the "just becauE I had a kid/ am too old" as I realized those are not always together but one or the other as far as referring to how the other anon explained the gal mamas made them feel more confident.
I'm aware gals were very likely to have babies early and desu thank god in a way at least that caused some births in Japan vs if gals weren't having babies. they could use a lot more gals having babies with the current state of things there what with the aging population and all.
>>
>>9358799
I'm sorry, I see it now. I guess I overread it since English isn't my first language, I sometimes miss important parts.

The low birthrate in Japan goes hand in hand with them enforcing women to work and stand up for themselves. Sure that usually is not a cause for someone to not have children, but as we all know working in Japan is a little more tough than in the rest of the world. Also, children are really expensive in Japan. A mom can't easily send her child to a daycare, it's super expensive, so usually it's cheaper for her to just stay at home and many girls don't want that anymore.

But seriously, I love gal mamas, there's this one on instagram with the three little girls. Forgot her @ maybe someone here knows it, but her kids and her look so sweet!

>>
>>9359085
Thank you! Yeah I struggle to keep them styled even with a fuck tonne of strong hold hair spray, maybe I have a damp forehead. Anyone got any tips for keeping a fringe in check?

I'm sorry you don't like the split colour but I personally love my tacky ass fringe
>>

Yeah, I thought you must love them, why else would you go through the hassle of maintaining them. They definitely give you a personal touch. I guess it's just me not liking them too much. But as said before, your make and styling got so good, I enjoy to look at your updates.

Maybe it's possible to get your bangs done at a hairstylist? I know some people who have natural curls who get their hair done 'permanently' straight once in a while.

And you also make me feel more confident about myself. I think we have very similar thighs but I often feel too uncomfortable to show myself in shorts, but you give me confidence like it does look amazing on you, so it can also look amazing on me if I just do it.
>>
>>9359156
Really? I don't feel like my body's changed all that much, I think I probably just started dressing better for it. It's a sweet thing to say though, so thanks!

All the hair shit I do is SUPER easy, I'm used to doing cosplay wigs so I suck at doing actual hair. If there's a specific thing I've done that you'd like explained, I'm happy to do so.

Also, you should be chill about thick thighs, a lot of japanese gals have them too, espec. in black diamond and soul sister. The way I see it, I got those thighs through years of lifting, so I'm not going to hide them away like I'm ashamed of them. Now, finding shorts that actually fit them is a bit of a bastard.

Are you gonna post too? It'd be nice to see what more people here dress like!
>>
>>9359160
For example the thing which you did woth your hair in the post above. I'm an absolute noob with getting my hair into curls and getting it into updoes. I usually keep it flat as it is or with twin tails.

I'm not yet sure if I'm going to post anytime soon, as I haven't had the time to dress gal in a while. But maybe soon?

Oh that's mad easy. The trick to the volume there is that I sleep with my hair in bantu knots (only a few tho because my hair is thin as hell) and then curl the extensions separately before I put them in- the curl texture doesn't match exactly, but you really can't tell once you've blended your extensions in, and it's a really easy way to get volume in the crown. As for the updo style itself, I did basically the same thing as this tutorial, doing the spiral around the crown thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nExGDLKTdYU

Super duper easy to do if you use extensions, even easier if you don't.

Pic related is another example of curling my own hair with bantu knots and curling my extensions separately. You could get a similar effect with 100% your own hair by putting the bits that won't really show in bantu knots, then doing nice neat wand curls over the rest and then a few at the bottom for length.

if you were into a more soft style, id love to see a blonde/coloured bang and the dark parts just a few shades lighter, or maybe even jetblack, but that must be even more of a hassle to maintain

They seem super young because by American standards they are dressed young. In America moms are expected to dress very neutral and mature.

>>9356429
There are plenty of American moms who strongly emphasize looking good and working out, but most of them are wealthy. It's a status thing. Gyaru Mama probably aren't far off from what we Americans would consider mommy bloggers.

I don't know why I am so nostalgic for the old DreamV catalog. I think to me it represents a time when Jfashion was huge. Fairy kei was popular, Deco-sweet lolita was popular, Hime gyaru was popular, and all those styles fed each other for inspiration and there was just a lot of new looks out there. Things were bright and colorful and pastel.

Now Larme is the it-style of the moment, and other styles are feeding off Larme, and everything is a lot more muted and subdued. Which is cool, if you're into that sort of thing, but I miss the sparkly, cutesy pastels of yesteryear.

Why's everyone going for amekaji these days?
>>
>>9359806
I don't know but I'm loving it, there was only Heather and Lau for ages and now there's been a boom. I would say that part of it is Georgie's influence and part of it is that a popular gyaru page on fb did a week of amekaji posts. It's great though, I do find onee gal beautiful but I get tired of seeing that and only that. It's nice to see a bit more colour.

As for me personally, I got into amekaji last year because I started playing Style Boutique and I fucking love April BonBon.

They go to a love hotel, he pushes her down and touches her then makes her suck his dick, then makes her do anal despite her complaints. Most Japanese women watch their weight regardless of their fashion style. I think I read somewhere that doctors are really strict with their pregnant patients over there and won't treat them if they gain too much weight.

Already posted this in makeup general aswell, but what are some good budget primers and concealers?

just go for it, if you love hime, they just have to deal with it. Don't change your own style for other people.
ifyou start with kogal when it isn't your ideal, it may only demotivate you, and sice you are already lolita, hime is a great choice!

no matter how much that friend "hates hime", she will love to have someone else to share her general interest with
>>
>>9366095
>hates hime
imagine having this shit taste
>>
>>9368290
Hime is shit and does not embody the essence of gyaru in the slightest. Gyaru is for hot slutty trashy girls, not weebie lolita wannabe's.
>>
>>9369341
Well, if you go back to the origins of gyaru, really it's for freeaboo schoolgirls with more money than sense who want to live like a California Girl. But you clearly know nothing about the history of the style to be posting this shite. Go do some reading, I suggest starting with either Japanese Schoolgirl Inferno or japonisme's History of the Gyaru. Then you can avoid embarrassing yourself like this somewhere identifiable in the future.
>>
Can anyone post some rokku gyaru/goshikku gyaru inspiration? Just any darker themes in gyaru in general.
