This is my first time shooting at a con. Did a bit of research before hand:
- First I asked for permission to take a shoot and tell them to pose for me.
- Politely thanked them afterward.
- A few asked me for the pictures, we exchanged email and I send them via Onedrive.
- Then we go our ways.

Most of the cosplayers here are super friendly. I noticed a few arrogant ones, probably the more "famous" ones but it didn't bother me. Entry cost 4 bucks (80,000 VND). Ask me anything you want to know.

I think they are happy with the results but I can use some criticism here.

This is my first time going to a con. Before this, I only took landscape picture. I'm fairly shy around strangers so asking them to pose for me was a bit awkward at first but I managed to get by.

My experience is overwhelmingly positive. The cosplayers are super friendly and nice, even thanked me for taking their pictures. I think one them gave me a candy bar too, which made me kinda happy. There were not much merchandise being sold but I did buy a couple of manga.

I also read about photographer harrassing cosplayers and try to take advantage of the girls so also did my best not to step out of my boundaries. Ask, shoot and move on.

Anon, you sound like a quality person. I appreciate that you took the time to research how shooting at cons would be different from landscape photography, and that you were super respectful to the cosplayers the whole time! The photos look nice, too - if you continue going to conventions, you should consider getting an Flickr account or some other photosharing method - I'm sure that a wider audience would be interested in seeing your photos.

Really liking these op, would be great for you to take some full body shots too so we can see the whole cosplay next time though, either way they're enjoyable to look at

Thanks for these photos, anon. Could you tell us more about the com? Does it have a Cosplay contest? Or anime exhibition? What kind of attractions you saw there?

About the photos, maybe try looking at Japanese or Brazilian con photos. There are usually very crowded conventions in these places, but people manage to make nice pics.

A lot of these photos are more like headshots. Nothing wrong with shooting a few cosplay photos in this style, but you'll want to try to shoot as much of the costume as you can fit in the frame. At the very least try to aim from head to waist if possible.

Your bokeh in general is very nice. As a huge bokeh whore, I can appreciate what you're going for here. What kind of lens are you using? Judging by the shallow depth of field and how much of the subjects you're actually getting inside the frame I would think it's something pretty ridiculous like a 200mm. You might have an easier time shooting at a shorter focal length like 50mm at a convention. Plus you can get more of their costumes in the frame.

You've got some really great stuff OP. A lot of my comments are just nitpicking, but I wanted you to at least get a few constructive comments in this thread. Also, I would highly suggest for you to get a social media account going. I suggest Instagram or Facebook because it's what the general public uses. As much as I love Flickr, you're basically showing off your work to a bunch of jaded photographers who only care about their own work. Instagram is more normie friendly.

I know that feel ;_; My first few cons I was so shy I could only work up the courage to ask for like 5 - 10 photos on my shitty point and shoot camera. That's like 10 photos the entire con, so you're way ahead of me in that department. Even today I'm still sort of a spastic when I approach people at conventions, but my desire to get a really good shot usually overrides my spastic nature. My suggestion is to look through your photos, figure out those little changes you could have done to make your photos perfect. Then next time you're shooting just ask yourself, would you rather feel awkward and ask the subject to make a few minor changes so that you can get a perfect photo, or would you rather just stay quiet and end up with a flawed photo and end up regretting it? Best of luck OP, hope to see more from you in the future.

Can I just say that I love how these aren't too clean-looking, they feel very natural.

If you do get your page up and running, print some namecards so that people know where to look for your photos afterwards. Also, nice work on the con photos! Sounds like Vietnamese cons are quite similar to the ones in Sg as well

I can retouch the picture to soften their skin and remove blemishes easily but I'm not sure how the cosplayers want to do them. Most pictures I've seen felt like their skin was melted by sandpaper and honestly I think it's horrible.

And yes, DSLR are fairly popular here but 90% of them are crop sensor body with small kit lens.

To be honest, you are better than 80% of the photographers in my local cosplay scene. Some have even been doing it for years and still look like shit.
