Can't decide if I should keep getting those old sweet dresses or go for the newer ones with the same feel. The older ones are amazing but some are approaching 7 or more years of secondhand wear, and I'm nervous about the declining quality while the price is still above $100 on them.

But dream dresses are fruits parlor and wonder cookie..

Not very old but, I got milky planet and sugar carnival last year, milky planet is still in pretty much perfect condition, while sugary carnival is definitely a little faded, both I got for less than $100.

they were actually both from us sellers strangely enough, though I do get most of my stuff from Japanese sellers. So definitely keep an eye out in multiple places for dresses you're looking for.

you could find both of those prints on japanese secondhand for 100 or less if you really kept your eyes peeled for a deal

the only dress I have that's faded is fantasic dolly, and that's only because my friend who has the same print wore it at the same time I did so I could compare vibrancy. Sill not very noticeable, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Not that anon but perhaps I can help.

It all depends on the cuts/colors, really.

For Sugary Carnival: The lavender jsk seems to be the most popular color and cut. The jsk and headbow still goes for around 200. Blue is a close second. Pink and black seem to be in the 150-200 range. It is completely different with OPs though, those seem to be in the 100-150 range.

For milky planet, yellow is still pretty sought after, more so in the JSK ver. (250-300) as opposed to the OP (200-250). The older blue, pink, and black go for more than the newer release, ranging in the 200/200/150-200 price ranges for both cuts. The newer mp release goes for 150-200 with navy being the most popular. The salopettes I have seen for 120-180.

This is all the western market, mind you. If you can find them from Japan they will be a bit cheaper but not by much once you factor in SS fees and shipping.

there's a navy milky planet jsk for 13,000 yen that keeps lowering in price, if anyone wants it or wants to track it. Will probably go down to 12,000 if no one bids, it started at 15,000 a couple weeks ago.

Anyone else feeling serious pangs of sadness looking at this thread and the last? I just miss the cheerful, vibrant charm of 2010 era sweet so much. Somehow it all looks less childish and trite than current sweet. There was a clownishness to it that seems to have been replaced with, idk, pageantry? Sorry for the long winded bitterfagness, I just really love the old sweet. Sorry I have a more OTT pic for this blog post.

Is it just me, or does anyone else kind of feel like circle lenses are really needed to completely round out an OTT sweet coord?

I know this will never happen in a million years but I wish AP would re-release the sugary carnival tokyo colorway. It's the only Sugary Carnival that I like.

Completely agree. Old OTT Sweet has an air of fun to it. Pageantry is like the best word to describe the current OTT Classic trend. Everyone tries to outdo each other and pretend to be a fucking princess, wearing borederline costumes, while OTT Sweet is like "i just love this shit, let me put it all on my head, and take pics with my best friend who is also a pastel vomit blob".

Totally with you guys. I'm a gothic Lolita myself, but I love looking at OTT sweet pictures because it's all so whimsical and fun. Everyone wearing it looks so happy to be a cotton candy fluff! Because it was so in your face it felt like girls wore it because they liked it instead of for the likes, it takes a lot of balls to be a pastel billboard walking down the street.

Does anyone have a criteria for what makes a coordinate OTT sweet? For me most OTT sweet coordinates usually must feature unnatural colored hair or wigs. Emphasis on the unatural colored hair. Except in >>9330679, but the abundance of accessories, the cotton candy prop, candy wrapper on her head and extra apron made it OTT.

Maintain popularity? She's still considered popular? IMO she looked way better in sweet. Her best coords were ott sweet. In classic she looks old and tired. If anything I think she would maintain popularity by going back since it's a style that a lot of people love, but don't wear often, and don't see. It would be nice at least IMO to see someone putting out new ott coords instead of us just rehashing the same old ones over and over

it's not the hair so much. ott sweet is the polar opposite of casual sweet. very embellieshed, tons of accessories and several different colors used to build the coord.
some of the photos posted are of just regular sweet, but I don't want to shit this thread up by bitching about it, cuz they're still cute coords.
ott sweet is playful and dramatic excess.
it certainly requires more than one hair accessory, and if not, there'd better be colorful make-up and face jewels!!

I really wanna get into more OTT sweet (it was what I loved back when I got into lolita around 2009) but I feel like my face isn't cute enough for it. I have a long skinny face (kinda like a more attractive Lor) and I'm wondering if anyone has tips to help make it look more sweet? Or am I just doomed to be butterface OTT sweet lolita?

OTT sweet didn't completely die out, it just changed. Brown/chocolate came into style, and with it darker pastels, and slowly jewel tones.

A lot of people stilll wear OTT sweet but in a more modern way, and I still see a lot of people wearing the older dresses. It's just that not everyone likes to post on CoF, and for the very big events people like to go super princessy.

Why did it change? Mostly because of what the brands release. They can't keep making the same stuff, the designers get new inspirations, and people fall in love with the new creations.

A lot of people also take coord inspirations from the brand fashion shows which go super ott

Also you can still see hints of the older OTT sweet styling in the newer AP fashion shows.

i am happy that lolita is a subculture that thrives and changes, if not then it would have died out. i think the different "trends" during the years only added to the richness of the fashion, and you can choose your style/influence by yourself. wether oldschool sweet, OTT sweet or todays more classic mature sweet. it's nice to have this variety to be insipred from!

the reason fashion changes? well, there is of course many causes but i think the main reason is what the customers buy, because it will affect what brands release. if ap notices that their more chiffony or chocolatey pieces sell more than their super sweet pastel ones, they will of course follow this because they are a company. then of course, who decides the trends? the companies or the consumers? it works in a dynamic way and both affect each other, i guess.

A couple things killed OTT Sweet

>People grew out of it/got bored with it
Sae and her friends were the OTT sweet lolita idols of many, and when she stopped posting so much, that signaled an end to the style

>It became overtaken by newbies
Because OTT is so noticable and flashy, it brought a ton of new people into the fashion, who were young, and weebish, who could only afford replicas and shitty GLW twintail wigs. They cheapened the look. There was a time when everyones first coordinate was a pink and lavender twintail wig and a Bodyline carousel dress.

When prints were immediately replicated the moment they came out, that made them lose the prestige they once had.

Gothic Lolita Wigs had their "muse" contests, and when the Lolita community migrated from Livejournal to Tumblr and Facebook everyone was a lot more concerned with being internet famous and promoting themselves.

We probably won't see OTT Sweet as it was in 2009 come back. Angelic Pretty just doesn't make prints like that anymore (does Maki even make prints anymore? Her work ended up being the staples of OTT), and it seems like the Larme and toned down trend is affecting all j-fashions and not just Lolita. We might see a small revival, but it will look different than it did back then.
