So Is it seen as a bad thing to "male" up a female

People have been genderswapping male characters to female for years, I don't see how this is any different.

I guess my big concern is I see a lot of hate around for girls that take guy characters and crossplay it. I was more wondering if i'd get the same hate for doing it. I love Kancolle and they've got so many awesome ship designs, but I'm not a girl so it leaves me with very little options (faceless admiral anyone?)

I think the general hate is for the poorly done ones. The ones who do the typical "sexy" genderbent version that is obviously done because they just want to show tits and put no real work into the costume.
