Anybody into kimono fashion? Do's and don'ts? Sources? I'm really inspired by all the New Years outfits in Japan right now.
>>9307802
Kimono is really easy to get wrong. People don't understand how many components go into an outfit and end up buying cheap polyester bathrobe 'kimonos'. I recommend reading through Immortal Geisha forums for those interested in order to avoid looking like an ita.
>>9307802
When I had a twitter account I used to follow a lot of Japanese people, and every time they busted out Yukata/Kimono it was always their Grandma's and passed down from generation to generation. Doesn't really seem like something that one can get into without a lot of money.
>>9307867
You can actually get used kimono for cheap on yahoo Japan and even eBay. Buying anything new will cost you an arm and a leg though.
>>9307867
>>9307875
Yeah! I really recommend auctions on eBay, I think the most expensive item in my kimono wardrobe is $30! I've won really cute pieces on sou, all though I only have komon so far. I've also seen furisode go for $50-100 which is a great deal! (I'm talking second hand btw! New is usually really pricey, though I've seen some cute yukata for cheap on rakuten)
Asked in another thread but I'm gonna ask here too since no one replied.
Where is a good source for kimono accessories like nagajuban, collars, and silk cords? I found some kimonos I like but having a hard time finding the accessories I would need to wear one. Found only one seller of undergarments on etsy, and one seller on y!J. Not sure where to look or what search terms I need to put together a proper kimono set.
>>9308050
Rakuten is where you can get them. Quite a few kimono sellers from Japan will ship internationally and quite a few take paypal as payment.
My local community has a few Japanese festivals each year and I'd love to wear traditional Japanese clothing. Problem is I'm afraid I'll do it wrong or offend someone. I have a few questions.
Are hakama really only appropriate for graduation ceremonies? Would it be awkward if I wore a furisode at 25? Can you wear a yukata earlier in the year or are they really only for summer? Barring thickness of materials, of course. I'm asking if it's culturally okay.
I just want to do it right if I'm going to do it at all.
>>9308060
IMO it's fine to wear furisode or yukata as long as you're not being an actual racist about it and you wear it properly. Unfortunately the nisei community has pulled stunts like this http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-33450391 and obviously has little to no awareness of what traditional dress actually means. People at festivals (vs internet commenters) will probably be delighted that you're sharing in their cultural traditions. The only people who may be upset at you wearing a real furisode/yukata are nisei/american haffu who have a complex about melting pot identity and whatnot and you should just ignore them. Don't let them ruin beautiful clothing and experiences for you.
Does anyone have recommendations for more modern print kimono and yukata? My search on y!a hasn't turned up any bold and modern looking ones
pic related is the look I'm going for
>>9308283
"モダン" doesn't help narrow results?
Hiroko Takahashi has some amazing work.

Modern Antenna also has some really cool looking pieces.

Yukata Lab has a few fun modern designs available.

Call me crazy, but I love these. Well, not sure about the outfit on the right but I love seeing kimono worn creatively.

This is the sort of thing I want to go for. Especially the first 2
>>9308920
Me too. I love really bold looks inspired by the Taisho era. It's interesting to see that modern, yet retro, look and how different people incorporate it into their look.
>>9308922
>>9308218
I question how much of that protest was nisei. Most of the quotes from protesters in the news stories are from Chinese, Korean, and Indian/south Asian "activists".
I adore this so much.
I've worn this to a US based Japanese Culture Festival and had three Japanese ladies come up to me to compliment how I was wearing it. I was so proud I tied that obi by myself. I would think it they were just being polite but then why would they have approached me. I tend towards vintage second hand silk and brocade kimono. I might be basic but at least I wasn't offensive. Yay?
>if Lisa Frank designed a kimono
I'm not into this kind of Gyaru, don't even remember what it is called, but I have deep respect for this lady. I love when people incorporate their personal style with traditional clothing.
>>9308995
Sorry if this is a noob question but are there any guides to yukata or furisode styles? I'm in love with these them but want to know key differences since I want to be respectful about it.
>>9308932
That's stunning! Where did you find it?
>>9309047
Random google search. It appears its from Liz Lisa, released in 2014.

An anon before had already mentioned Immortal Geisha forums in the first post.
>>9309066
This wedding kimono is really cute.
>>9308046
sou abandoning free shipping was a tragedy (less so for my wallet, though)
>>9308931
I guess I meant born outside of asia asians in general. Good point.
Would it be appropriate to wear ankle boots with an iromuji? It rains constantly where I live and I have weak ankles, so boots seem more practical, and I've seen them worn with other styles of kimono. I just don't want to look like an idiot.
>>9309151
Polite sage and sorry for the retard question, but what is that style of jacket called? Pic related as well. I see them worn in anime often also but don't know the proper terminology....
Posting some infographs and relevant pics to bump this out of interest
>>9308218
exactly, most real Japanese persons I have spoke to would rather other places import or value japanese culture rather than have their culture become more western. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
>>9309505
haori
>>9309555
Thank you so much!
>>9309011
Holy shit anon, did you even try googling? This is such an easy question
>>9309166
Honestly I didn't understand how they were even getting by with free shipping, they would on average pay $25 for shipping on an item I payed $10 on. 3 bucks flat for shipping isn't that bad... It just means I'm a little cranky about buying stuff that should have been really cheap like obijime aha
>>9309495
Honestly, as long as it looks good, no one cares.
>>9309514
I have no idea why furisode isn't categorized as 'very formal'. They're the most formal kimono an unmarried woman can wear (e.g. why everyone wears them to graduation ceremonies, and even to weddings).
This yukata was made out of Brazillian fabrics.
>>9310149
>>9308978
I think they might set the bar lower for non-Japanese people but the fact that they complimented you probably means you're doing something right! Both the obi and fold look neat and crisp so I say good job.
>>9308060
IIRC as time goes on, less and less people know proper kimono etiquette. So some people might not even know what's appropriate to wear in terms of colour and formality so they won't care. Also the further you get from Japan the further the rules relax and only people who are hardcore traditional would mind, generally people are okay with the rules being bent here and there. I've asked the same question in previous threads and this is pretty much the answers I got - as I am both married and about to 27 yet super in love with hakama. If you check IG, I believe kimonoseikatsu is the username, wears a lot of hakama and modern coords so I'd say you're fine.
Glad this popped up. I keep seeing these in various designs all over Taobao and I like the idea of casually wearing one at a con one day with some nice looked heeled boots but I'm not sure if it's a good idea or a bad one.
Does anyone here make their own kimono, and any pics of westerners wearing them, wondering how they sit, as bodyshapes are different.
>>9310249
I have a friend who makes her yukata, kimono, and even obi, as she is both tall and plus size with an hourglass shape. Her biggest issue is fitting into kimono height-wise. So making her own lets her make it to her measurements so that it sits the way she likes it.
So yeah, speaking of bodyshapes, she is a curvy hourglass and so she binds her chest and then pads her waist to make a more cylindrical silhouette so the kimono sits more nicely. In comparison I'm pretty flat and although I have a big butt I'm basically a rectangle shape wise. Typically I don't pad but if I was doing something really fancy I'd definitely go the extra mile.
Here's a picture of me wearing a yukata my friend made. It's actually a little bit big on me as it was made to her measurements (she's 4-5" taller than me, for comparison). She made the obi as well. I hope that helps a little.
>>9310337
And dropped my image like a doofus...
>>9310120
This picture confuses me....was this a fashion show on a train?
The decor and lack of advertisements shows it isn't a real bus (at least not in operation) and there's a photographer at the far end
>>9310200
Hakama with heeled boots looks absolutely fantastic

It really does which is why I wanted to get this one but I'm not that familiar with hakama to know whether or not the quality is alright since it's a Taobao brand.
Here's the link if anyone can toss in an opinion on how it looks.
https://world.taobao.com/item/520404130393.htm?fromSite=main
>>9310916
I wouldn't buy since cheap kimono stuff looks very obviously of bad quality. Just buy the real deal from Rakuten. You can get an entire set for $60 or so.
>>9310989
Alright, thanks for chipping in! I had only planned on wearing it casually as daywear at cons but since it is traditional wear I'd hate to be that person like with those awful silk bathrobe kimonos.
How's this?
http://kimono-yamato-furisode.com/mces/index/00948
I'm curious, where do you anons wear your kimono? Do you just use it as con wear, or for Japanese festivals in your area, or is this something you'd put on like Lolita for a day out with friends?
>>9311130
I just wear them out normally. You get a lot of stares from normies, but if you enjoy wearing them, who cares.
kimonos are really hard to put on though. It's easy to get wrong so if you can't get a shop assistant to help you wear it correctly, stick to a yukata or something since that's easier.
>>9311139
It just takes practice. There's tons of informative videos on YouTube.
I adore the fabric they used for this.
>>9309584
Wait, $3 flat for shipping? Worldwide? Holy shit, how are they even managing that?
>>9312169
The pattern is Yagasuri/Yabane. Appears to be also referred to as "fletching" and often comes up in "graduation" kimono sets.

Does anyone know where to purchase good fabric for hakamas? I'm in love with the ones >>9312169 mentioned and want to try my hand at making one for fun.
>>9312352
Thank you very much, anon. I'm wondering if it's strictly for graduations because to me, it can look fitting for a more smart-casual outfit
Dear seagulls,
What do you call it when the collar has an angle like this instead of being a straight line?
>>9313503
It's fashionable to use for gradtuations, but it's definitely not strictly for that.
There's a recent NHK video about Kimono if anyone wants to see it

Tokyo Fashion posted a Flickr album for Coming of Age Day if anyone is interested. Might find some inspiration.

Furisode is only really a bad idea if you're married from what I've been told.(or so my Mum was told when she tried to buy a kimono in Japan)
>>9316500
Yeah furisode is only for unmarried women.
>>9316500
I'm not married but I am in a long term relationship. I'll probably avoid wearing them but I do think they're the most beautiful of all kimono styles.
Some Japanese women are wearing furisode over their wedding dress like this. What do you think? It looks unusual but I think its nice and creative.
>>9317331
Oh wow that's beautiful!
gouk + SB69
>>9320873
The only 'kimono' thing about this are the sleeves.
>>9317331
I like the idea, but I feel it looks a bit awkward in the styling. Mostly the obi/belt, how thick it is, and the positioning.
>>9312058
Oops! I meant per item (on their ebay, I'm not sure about their website) but still I have no idea how their managing. But like before when they used to have free shipping I really wonder if they had some kind of deal with a shipping company to be able to offer it. Since if they were actually paying full for shipping themselves they would have been losing a lot of money off their auctions..?
>>9321107
And it was EMS shipping on top of that. My guess is that they had some kind of deal with the post or something like that. Too bad it had to come to and end, getting getas for 3$ or a kimono for 8$ shipping included was just so good.

I'm total newbie to yukata but I'm assuming the bow is just on the side as they tied it there rather than it being a seperate bow they added on after? y/n?
>>9311317
Kinda off topic but what's that texture she has in the middle of her hair called and how do I achieve it?
>>9325856
crimping ,looks like she used a medium sized one
>>9325846
Yeah you tie the obi into the bow.
>>9325647
Make me. I bet you don't even know if I'm Japanese or not do you? I bet you aren't even Japanese. Or know that they really encourage everyone to wear kimonos because the entire industry is dying out?
