Haven't found this one in the catalogue.
When you start a thread, you should dump a few photos to start it off.
Was there an anon who was working on identifying the age of pieces based on their tags? I recently got an ap headbow with an older tag. I'm not too bothered about knowing its age but it would be useful to have some sort of resource on tags.
Can anyone help me find some worn teddy gobelin photos? It's weirdly hard to find oldschool classic coords
Do you mean this teddy gobelin, anon? This is all I have
Ok to use for old school or too ita? What do you think?
Ita. So many ugly details (that waist bow, for one). It's not oldschool just because it's BxW. Just buy second hand brand, sick of people wearing ugly bodyline as 'oldschool', it's not even cheaper.
>sick of people wearing ugly bodyline as 'oldschool'
ugh this so much
It's actually really nice in black without the stupid waist bow, makes for nice, simple oldschool kuro. I agree though that it may be worth saving your funds for the second hand market unless bl is having another mega sale.
In some ways, I miss it when music notes were a cute and common sweet lolita motif, but at the same time, I don't because they always remind me of shitty Hot Topic apparel.
guess I'll keep the dump train going. I wasn't sure what I have at first; next time I'll put old school files into their own folder.
btw is anyone selling any long bloomers or white OTK socks with lace tops?
Idk if I want to shell on the rachel lace ones from Meta or pick a pair off lacemarket though those options are limited.
aww, I miss this ad. Whatever happened of the model?
eh, figured I'd share the last of the article.
Man, I miss Nana Kitade. I miss seeing the number and kinds of lolita fashion related artists and musicians from years before. It feels less like a sub-culture with them falling out of lolita.
wow, I'm dumb. Didn't see the cover of this article at first. I wish I still had the physical copy of this issue.
I was wrong, sorry my dudes. For some reason I thought this would be much older but it's actually pretty recent
I dunno I just keep seeing interesting pieces that look oldschool come up on auction and wondered how to coordinate them.
It gets boring seeing the same pieces and styles posted over and over in these threads. I'd love to see old shots of coordinates with J et J and IW
oh Lordt. I'm glad people don't do the sitting dolly pose anymore. It's always sounds like a good idea, but never in practice.
last one for tonight. I'll dump more tomorrow.
I would say it is with old school goth if you are aiming to a more erotic look. Think Mana and old street snaps with shorter skirts. Any other style no.
Fanplusfriend have honestly good bloomers. I added lace to mine but I atleast they used to have longer ones with nice cotton lace. Lolitabutiken has nice lace topped otks, but they don't have the ribbon Baby's socks have so when the elastic is dead they won't stay up.
Oh gosh, the thumbnail startled the fuck out of me. I thought she had a broad shoulders and a little ass head.
good to know. I was actually on F+F before I saw your reply and I was sorely disappointed that they don't have their long bloomers anymore, but at least they stepped up their game elsewhere?
Damn. I really should have bought a pair from BL back when the B-day started, but that shipping was a bitch. I don't have time to order anywhere for an upcoming old school meetup, so I guess I'll just make a pair of long bloomers or lace cuffs. I'll keep these in mind though.
Alright. Back to dumping. Sorry it took so long. Internet was taking a long shit.
aww. This makes me miss Avant Gauche and seeing the handmade lolita sections from old GLBs.
I got my bloomers few years ago already so I'm not really aware if they still carry them. But damn I was going to get those long ones! My next option will probably be Cloudberry Lady, will see if I can get a nice apron from her.
I figured this was most suited for the old school thread but if not ill take it to a help thread. Anyhow, has anyone tried "curlformers" as a way to get the oldschool sausage curl look? I'm thinking of buying them as they seem easy and i'm one of those people that really hates using heat to style hair (as well as being quite awful at it)
So if you've tried them, do they work?
I haven't tried them as I usually heat style mine. I was going to try the straw curling method or buy some rollers as I remember getting really good ringlets from my grandmother putting my hair in rollers as a small child.
Any gulls know where to get clunky old school style Mary Jane's that aren't shit quality (preferably leather)? I like the TUK ones but they don't have plain, non brogue black ones. I'm having a helluva time finding that wide, boxy toe style in modern shoes.
I have Demonia boots rather than shoes, but the ones I have are solid. The pleather is tough, hard wearing, and the soles are solid. Ive had mine for several years and have driven in them, gone to gigs in them, all sorts.
I personally love an enamel shoe because of the kitschy vibe. I think it really depends on what sort of old school look you're going for - a shoe doesn't become objectively more old school if it happens to be shiny/not
I got demonias boots secondhand and laced them up too roughly and ripped out one of the metal rivets (they had the fast lace style eyelets). I don't know how I'm going to fix it or what those eyelets are called
I have "air rollers", those foam sticks. I usually roll my hair when it's still damp and after I have applied mousse and let them be over night. Am I doing something wrong because the curls are... not as curly as I would like? My hair is naturally curly and doesn't hold curls very well generally. I'm not looking to get sausage curls that way, but I would like to but I'm afraid they won't last at all.
You could do the other technique then where instead of doing it damp after a shower you take hairspray and let it "wet" the hair and then roll it up. Might help with the frizz and set the curl more. Or you can try this version of rag curls (sausage curls really) and see if it's more effective https://beyondbluestockings.wordpress.com/2012/04/30/hear-ye-hear-ye-or-dead-easy-rag-curls/
I also have naturally curly hair and when I want defined ringlets I add coconut oil then braid it for anywhere between half an hour and overnight then let it out and it goes into nice spirals with less frizz
Finally got my hands on the Alice Doll magazine. Anyone interested in better scans or has someone done it already?
Here it is! Sorry it's kinda messy and some photos repeat. I put comments on a lot of the photos, listing brand info or any other useful info. If a picture doesn't have a comment, I either didn't have anything to say about it or it's part of a set and just one photo in the set has the info. It should be pretty easy to figure out though, since the photos will look similar.
For fucks sake satan take my soul already and dump this glorious pile of lace, appliques and knitted berries on my house, please. Thank you anon for this huge source of inspiration!
This came to my mind as I was thinking my own wardrobe and if I could do coordinates similar to those in precious Anon's album. Do any of you gyus ever get a feeling that your coordinates are pseudo-old school? I can't describe the feeling very well but I sometimes feel my coordinates are so far from "true" old school and I look ridiculous. I have certainly become better in coordinating in general because I have a bigger wardrobe but I still get that feel often and it's just so annoying.
It is Crown Label, a sister brand from Metamorphose. I recieved a black meta blouse as well. But the lightning was really weird when I tried to take a detail pic. I swear it is black irl.
I am such a sucker for peter pan collars.
Yeah, me too anon. Especially the ridiculously large ones. I have a Baby blouse which have gorgerous cherry eyelet lace all over it, super large collar and those wide sleeves and I absolutely love it. Shame it's ivory and I only have an old Babydoll jsk in ivory, but I have Baby's Velveteen Overskirt jsk in beige on it's way so maybe it will match.
Recent purchases, anyone? I have Angelic Pretty's Dressy Bunny-chan Curduroy jsk and Girls Mode jsk. Starting to like my collection, allthough these are not that old.
I hope you don't mind if I add some of these to my imgur album?
It's a bit messy atm, I need to put all the new additions into their correct places. Though now imgur has changed the layout of albums I might focus on putting them all on the tumblr I started.
I have Abbey-03 and Gothika-09, both for several years, wearing them maybe once every two months. Mine are holding up well construction-wise, I've worn them to concerts and am not especially careful with them. The Abbey are actually quite ok for walking a lot, since they have a higher platform.
Questionable hat. I like how she matched it with her lipstick.
Do you prefer straight or curly hair in old school? I have a meetup today and was planing on sleeping with rags in my hair to ro a rag curls but I fell asleep before I could do anything and I dont have a curling iron. So im trying to figure out what exactly I want to do with my hair...
I think both can work with old school, really, depends on what you do with your hair. Imo if you have bangs then you don't need to fuss around too much.
As far as styling goes, another thing you can do is tease your hair to add volume to it, that can look very cute too, but honestly whatever you do just make sure your hair looks nice and pick a good hair accessory to go with it.
Some scans I found on tumblr
Kamikaze Girls - Kera 68, May 2004
This Heart E OP from 2001 is on Fairy Angel if anyone wants it for about $65.
what are you guy's thoughts on newer old school coords in general?
I like that people are still wearing old school, and some of the people who do have great coords. They have the attitude down and their coords are nice, but more in the "what you see in a brand ad and not the street snaps" way? Like, yes, old school is more casual than modern, but these modern coords feel more formal than they would be if they were actually created in, say, 2003.
Sometimes I look at "new old school" and feel like it's just completely missed the mark. A coord can have all the well-known elements of old school like the lacy knee highs, platform shoes, solid colours/simple patterns, etc. but lack that old school... spirit, I guess. Gives me the feeling like it's just an emulation. The scowls, handmade pieces, teddy bears, weird haircuts, low quality photography, and straight-up "what?" outfits are gone, and I miss that. I guess I miss when lolita was still in the experimental stages. It's become so formulaic.
I just noticed that the person on the left isn't actually wearing the dress at all. They just have a arm and their head through the top half and the other person is holding it on them. The hem and skirt base gives it away.
Well I sturggle with this a lot with my old school coords but it gets better over the time. The feel you described makes me want to quit wearing it sometimes but afterall it's "the" style for me. However I'm not strictly old school and sometimes I wear more modern dresses in a old schoolish way. I like the aesthetic of brand ads and to be matchy matchy but I think it kinda works with 2005-2006 era? I don't know if it matters but I don't get heavily inspired by streetsnaps and always try to put the coord together by myself without weeks of planning and well I'm a daily lolita so that would be impossible. I think it just takes time to grasp "that thing" in old school because we are not influenced by it constantly anymore. Atleast I have my frumpy face to help to get the spirit of streetsnaps.
New old school is very specific elements from old school. It's not truly as experimental nor does it have the same feeling as actual old school. Newer lolitas who don't actually remember the old school snaps (post 2012 generally, I think in the OTT era when Avant Gauche and livejournal were still in their heyday people still saw a bit of that aesthetic) shit on stuff that was actually popular in the old school era because they have this specific idea of what it should look like.
Look again and follow the hem before you insult someone, you muppet. Here, have a more focused picture.
maybe you guys feel old school is lacking the "uniqueness" it once had because girls aren't ugly af anymore? like in every street snap i see its really ugly foot face looking girls and the people that more or less stick to it now are generally attractive
Not sure if the previous was pink actually.
That's probably it, at least partially.
The makeup was more natural looking back then and it wasn't really considered an important part of the look, so nobody really cared how a Lolita's face looked.
Now with Photoshop and Instagram and stuff like fake eyelashes, it's easier to cover up what's not considered "pretty" so that people think they naturally look that way.
And with the whole stay-anonymous-on-the-internet thing, lots of people, attractive or not, hide their face behind their phone when they take pictures.
Vintage AP are pretty bold here, and Maki looked almost the same as she does now, I do wonder how old she is and whether she had helped AP transition from this blocky, contrasting old school sweet to pastels, to crosses in every other print now.
not the other anon but I own two pairs of Demonias, Ranger 302 and Mega 608, bought them both new in 2013 and 2014 respectively, they're still in great condition and I wear them near enough constantly.
I have the Dolly-01 in the shiny patent. To be fair they are not comfortable for long periods of time as the strap/shoe itself is pretty inflexible so you basically end up clunking around, but I've worn them to go out to town (on my feet lots dancing, less walking) so have actually used them rather than kept them to look at. I have seen some reviews of them that say the strap breaks quickly, but mine have not had any issues.
The style rather than the shine is what does it for me. I would go with what you like best.
The air rollers might be too thick for the curl that you want. Try the straw method.
