I have "air rollers", those foam sticks. I usually roll my hair when it's still damp and after I have applied mousse and let them be over night. Am I doing something wrong because the curls are... not as curly as I would like? My hair is naturally curly and doesn't hold curls very well generally. You could do the other technique then where instead of doing it damp after a shower you take hairspray and let it "wet" the hair and then roll it up. Might help with the frizz and set the curl more. This came to my mind as I was thinking my own wardrobe and if I could do coordinates similar to those in precious Anon's album. Do any of you gyus ever get a feeling that your coordinates are pseudo-old school? I can't describe the feeling very well but I sometimes feel my coordinates are so far from "true" old school and I look ridiculous. I have certainly become better in coordinating in general because I have a bigger wardrobe but I still get that feel often and it's just so annoying.

I have a Baby blouse which have gorgerous cherry eyelet lace all over it, super large collar and those wide sleeves and I absolutely love it. Shame it's ivory and I only have an old Babydoll jsk in ivory, but I have Baby's Velveteen Overskirt jsk in beige on it's way so maybe it will match.

I think both can work with old school, really, depends on what you do with your hair. Imo if you have bangs then you don't need to fuss around too much.
As far as styling goes, another thing you can do is tease your hair to add volume to it, that can look very cute too, but honestly whatever you do just make sure your hair looks nice and pick a good hair accessory to go with it.

what are you guy's thoughts on newer old school coords in general?

I like that people are still wearing old school, and some of the people who do have great coords. They have the attitude down and their coords are nice, but more in the "what you see in a brand ad and not the street snaps" way? Like, yes, old school is more casual than modern, but these modern coords feel more formal than they would be if they were actually created in, say, 2003.

Sometimes I look at "new old school" and feel like it's just completely missed the mark. A coord can have all the well-known elements of old school like the lacy knee highs, platform shoes, solid colours/simple patterns, etc. but lack that old school... spirit, I guess. Gives me the feeling like it's just an emulation. The scowls, handmade pieces, teddy bears, weird haircuts, low quality photography, and straight-up "what?" outfits are gone, and I miss that. I guess I miss when lolita was still in the experimental stages. It's become so formulaic.

Well I sturggle with this a lot with my old school coords but it gets better over the time. The feel you described makes me want to quit wearing it sometimes but afterall it's "the" style for me. However I'm not strictly old school and sometimes I wear more modern dresses in a old schoolish way. I like the aesthetic of brand ads and to be matchy matchy but I think it kinda works with 2005-2006 era? I don't know if it matters but I don't get heavily inspired by streetsnaps and always try to put the coord together by myself without weeks of planning and well I'm a daily lolita so that would be impossible. I think it just takes time to grasp "that thing" in old school because we are not influenced by it constantly anymore. Atleast I have my frumpy face to help to get the spirit of streetsnaps.

New old school is very specific elements from old school. It's not truly as experimental nor does it have the same feeling as actual old school. Newer lolitas who don't actually remember the old school snaps (post 2012 generally, I think in the OTT era when Avant Gauche and livejournal were still in their heyday people still saw a bit of that aesthetic) shit on stuff that was actually popular in the old school era because they have this specific idea of what it should look like.

That's probably it, at least partially.

The makeup was more natural looking back then and it wasn't really considered an important part of the look, so nobody really cared how a Lolita's face looked.
Now with Photoshop and Instagram and stuff like fake eyelashes, it's easier to cover up what's not considered "pretty" so that people think they naturally look that way.

And with the whole stay-anonymous-on-the-internet thing, lots of people, attractive or not, hide their face behind their phone when they take pictures.

I have the Dolly-01 in the shiny patent. To be fair they are not comfortable for long periods of time as the strap/shoe itself is pretty inflexible so you basically end up clunking around, but I've worn them to go out to town (on my feet lots dancing, less walking) so have actually used them rather than kept them to look at. I have seen some reviews of them that say the strap breaks quickly, but mine have not had any issues.
