Anyone have patterns/tutorials for this type of skirt? I'm hoping it wont be difficult because I'm not particularly skilled at sewing. I looked into petticoat tutorials but they werent exactly what I was looking for

Also what material would be best? tool, chiffon, organza? Kind of leaning towards the latter of the two because they're softer
>>
>>9221409
It's just gathered rectangles sewed onto an elastic waistband. In that particular skirt I'd guess they went for a long pase layer of pink fabric and then layered smaller rectangles in different colours on it.
I would pick soft tulle, organza would be way to stiff and woldn't drape nicely and chiffon would just eliminate even the slightest bit of poof.

>>
>>9223882
Thank you, i will look into this.
I found this website that gives a nice step by step instruction.
http://www.emmakespatterns.com/draftabasicbodice/

Together with this site (https://opensourcestitches.wordpress.com/2011/02/17/pattern-drafting-101-the-mens-shirt-block/) I should be able to make a pattern for a shirt.
Thank you very much

What is the best way to draw a pattern like this?
Is there software to do this or is it better to do this directly on paper?

>can't easily find patterns for simple thighhighs
Also, how do I pick out a good sewing machine?
Second hand ones seem to be fairly cheap but all of them are vintage.
>>
>>9226036
Those machines work better than a shiny new one if you spend $60 to have them serviced at a shop.
Today's machines are shit and break down rather quickly compared to old models.
Also look up Mami's socks tutorail for thigh highs, it gives a good way to go about them. Though it's basically just trace leg on fabric, sew, try on and pin super tight to leg, remove leg and sew. Sew in some elastic to keep them up and done.

I learned pattern blocking from old sewing books. Best to do it on paper, newsprint works well as it's thin and can fold to body shapes.

What if I need to make socks based on legs I don't have access to?
I have a great idea for socks I could sell but it's not very useful if I can only make them to fit me, especially since I'm slightly oddly proportioned.

Also, how vintage are you talking about?
Pic related is being sold near me for the equivalent to 32.50 USD, but I can't imagine it's capable of anything fancy.

Not that I'd understand fancy, unless whether my stitches unravelled or not came down to being able to use a fancy stitch.
>>
>>9226300
I was talking 1970s-80s, but that one looks like it comes with a lot of the extra things, and has the books. That's a great deal and good for a beginner. No it's not going to do crazy style stitches like flowers and stuff, but it can still probably do a zig-zag, straight and possibly button holes with those attachments. The stuff you actually use on plushies and costumes.

But, really, they're both for different uses. Knitting is for finer garments, and the stitches are much cleaner and prettier, but it takes more time; crochet is bulky and utilitarian, but quick (which is probably why it was popular during and closely after the Great Depression).

>sage because stupid facts

>>9227463
is not that pretty much along the definition of patrician though?

her pattern is expensive since she allows people to sell ponies made with it and she's factoring in that component. if i remember right the reviews said there wasn't much documentation for the price.

if you aren't picky with the pattern, there's this free one you can use courtesy of the resident horsefuckers. it produces some nice results.
>>
how do patterns work? are they cut out and sewed together at the seams, either folder over eachother or touching?
>>
>>9235203
You cut out the pattern from the fabric and sew the parts together with right sides of the fabric together. The right side is the "nice" side. The pattern will have indicators of where the pieces line up (see the same coloured letters on the pony pattern above, and the tic marks - although I've never seen that many on a pattern before). Patterns have seam allowance usually included so it comes out smaller than it looks on paper.
>>
Any good half bonnet patterns or tutorials?
>>
>>9235217
just a warning about patterns you find free on the internet, they usually don't have seam allowance. if they do, it usually says.

Honestly, a good pattern is usually pretty easy to put together with no instruction and basic knowledge of plush construction. I honestly think that expecting a pattern, that isn't meant for beginners to hold you hand all the way is pretty shit.

the thing is I'm new to both patterning and sewing clothes, I've made stuff like purses before, and small plush items with simple patterns.
>>
>>9235887
check out some thrift stores for sewing patterns, lots of older patterns have stuff like that. Like 70s and 80s. Though I lucked out and got a ton of vintage patterns from my elderly aunt.

Depends on the brand, price range, and the place you intend to buy it from.

>brother innov-is 955

A (4 x 4 inch) embroidery field is okay, but I would recommend something with a larger field if you plan to make lolita or custom clothing, quilts, bags, or large plush items with embroidered parts. A (5 x 7 inch) would probably be better if you can swing it. A ton of embroidery designs sold online are designed for a (5 x 7 inch) hoop or field; it's very frustrating having a (4 x 4 inch) field and not being able to utilize those designs. Most designs also look better the larger they are. Urban Threads usually carries (4 x 4 inch) embroidery designs, but they don't look as great as the (5 x 7 inch) or larger designs.

If you need a new sewing machine, I would look into buying that first and then shop around for an an embroidery only machine. The reason I suggest this is because I've found switching between attachments has gotten annoying and some embroidery designs can take hours to finish. I can't sew anything while it's doing the embroidery, so my projects are stacking up. Another reason is my SE400 has a (4 x 4 inch) field and it has become too small for the custom designs I create. Re-hooping and splitting designs has become troublesome and time/resource consuming. (I'm hemorrhaging money on stabilizer.) I've been looking into buying an embroidery only machine with a (6 x 10 inch) field through a local Brother dealer and would suggest you try the same before buying a machine. They might even carry sewing machines or sergers you can get a deal on.

I've included a list of benefits for buying from a dealership vs online. I'll gladly add to it if anyone has suggestions for the list. I'd like to include more benefits for the online section. It'd also be nice if we could get a resource going for sewing/embroidery machines since people are always unsure of what to buy and asking about them.

I'm noticing now there are several entries from people who run an Etsy or take plush commissions. Next time, I hope Laura filters out the professionals from amateurs.

I don't resent it if Serenity entered to have fun or to show off her skills; what I resent is that she's on a completely different level than over half of the entrants. I remember thinking she was going to take first place when I saw her entry. And she did.

I think it would have been fine if there had been a separate category for professionals. At least now I understand why a questionnaire is mandatory when people hold contests. (Unless it's a giveaway.)

I usually throw a detergent pack in and that's it. Most of the fleece you'll buy is meant for blankets and wearable junk, so it's not really delicate or anything.

You could get any basic pattern that looks close to it, like a bear or something and just mod it. The only thing that would be a real guessing game would be the ears and those look like loops of it sewn on.

Nah just outdated. This site is amazing in that it's like a time machine: you can review patterns and techniques that were being used before custom plush making became so common place.
>>
On the off-chance that anyone of you has a scan of it.

I'm looking for the knitting pattern for the Angelic Pretty Odekake Chocolat-chan Knit Muffler, which was either in the English Gothic & Lolita Bible 4 or the Japanese GLB 27.

I'd prefer the English one but if the japanese is a stitch chart, I can work with that, too and I'd be eternal grateful for it.

OMG, you're awesome anon! Thank you! A lot!

I've already started knitting the body with a somewhat shaky description of it which I found on livejournal, but you're a life saver for knitting the head.

No problem! I have three or four copies of this pattern laying around from having the Japanese and English volumes, and the patterns from a libraries copies they let me have. I saw your post and had to find at least one of them.
I hope it turns out well for you! Please post a picture once it's finished.
>>
>>9280656

Really awesome of you. I looked into ordering a copy of it for myself, but I'd have paid at least $50 for the japanese or $70 for the english one over here where I live in Europe... and that was a bit too much just to get my hands on a pattern, so I really appreciate you posting this!

Might take a while, since I'm a bit busy before Christmas, but I sure will post a picture when I'm finished.

Does anyone have any tips on selling embroidery files for plush?

I feel like the end product for my embroidery files/designs is usually better than most of the embroidery files I've seen on Etsy. Then again, I rarely bother using other people's embroidery files. I'm just not sure if there are "professional" standards I'm not aware of.
>>
For anyone looking for Simplicity patterns, I was at Hobby Lobby earlier and they're on sale for $1 each. I managed to get both of Teacup Lion's sets as well as the kigurumi pattern.
>>
>>9282708
What do you digitize with? I can't get my files to account for the stretch that fabric gives so I always have a gap between colors. (Also I can't figure out the setting for the nice thick border most outlines have)
>>
>>9283505

Embird...but it's an old version that's several years behind by now.

Do you overlap the colors? I usually make sure they overlap just a bit to prevent gapping. It's like adding seam allowance to a pattern.

For borders, I usually use the "outline object" tool (I think it's called that) and then manually adjust the parameters to change it into a satin stitch, followed by the desired width.
>>
>>9235247

Seconding this
>>
>>9283830
I'm using SewArt64 and maybe I just can't find the proper settings for the overlap but I'll look around, thanks! I'm sure your patterns would be fine on Etsy, just offer a wide variety of file types to account for most machines. (Personally I find that .pes are hard to come by for some reason)

Is it okay if I ask about sewing here? I don't come to this board ever but I have taken somewhat of an interest in sewing because I am somewhat poor and would like to be able to repair my own coats and the like. That also led me to thinking about actually creating stuff because I am also interested in history and it's extremely hard to find reproduction uniforms or coats that are not exorbitant in cost.

I am a complete beginner. What books and tools would someone recommend? I can't afford a sewing machine.
>>
>>9293236

>>9284708
>>9284448

check here anon. and seriously, if you want to get into historical costuming and you 'can't afford' a sewing machine, you can't afford to do costuming. You can get a nice workhorse of a machine for under $200 in the US.
>>
>>9293426

Depends on whether they want their costume to be hand stitched or machine stitched.
>>
>>9293432
I'm just talking material prices here anon.
>>
>>9293432
And anyway, depending on how historical you want to go with uniforms, the sewing machine was invented mid/late 1800s. So anything after that was made with a machine.
>>
>>9293433

Very true.

>>9293426

Anon, if you're that poor but still want to learn, I suggest beginning with hand sewing plush toys/felt stuffies and trying to sell them online. Find a niche. Use the money you make to save up for a sewing machine and better fabric.
>>
>>9291555
I've used these two links for fabric and both turned out fine:

true! hand sew small things.

but Im telling you, there's a reason that the sewing machine took over. Some people laude how they hand sewed shit, but it's no better than machine sewing.

>>9293434

Yeah, I was thinking about that and had to look up when sewing machines were invented. I'm southern, so the first thing that comes to my mind is Civil War reenactments when the word "historical" is mentioned. I'm pretty sure some of the uniforms may have been hand stitched, but I'm not 100% positive. I think it really just depends. For all I know, anon wants a "historical" peasant costume from 14th century Europe.
>>
>>9293443

I hate hand sewing. I can do it just fine, but I prefer to machine sew my plush. I'm not advocating we should all hand sew or that it looks better than machine sewn items so I'm not sure where you're going with this.

I just don't want to discourage someone from learning to sew when it can help them.
>>
Thanks, lads and lasses. Looking more into this now. I had no clue this was so expensive.
>>
It just occurred to me I have absolutely no sewing reference books. I do use the manual that came with my sewing machine, but it's not exactly great.

Can anyone recommend some books on sewing? Books you've personally used.

I want to make something for this girl I know (who likes whales) but I legitimately cannot afford fabric plus I'd have to order it online since there's nothing near me to get it (rural).

Would it be stupid or pathetic or something to cut up one of my old shirts that's the right colour and use that? It's not felt but I want to do this but can't afford to do it properly.
>>
>>9298030

What pattern are you using? Some patterns are pre-adjusted for fleece or minky, so using something without some stretch to it might not turn out well. But if it's meant to be a felt ornament, then it wouldn't really matter.
>>
>>9298100

I don't know. I just searched Youtube for a plush whale tutorial. I don't think I'm going to use it though.

Speaking of Choly...It's time to start finishing up your projects for the monthly crafting challenge, gulls.

I want to thank everyone who has posted a pattern in this thread.

I've spent over $100 the past six months buying patterns from various plush artists talked about in this thread. I wouldn't have bothered, however, if I hadn't gotten the chance to try out some of their patterns first. I know most artists would prefer we not share patterns, but I probably would have never bothered buying from them at all if it weren't for this thread.

Anyway, thanks.
>>
>>9302563
I put it together to the best of my ability. It's cute. It's kind of wonky though like >>9302563 said and could use some adjusting. But then I also didn't know exactly how to put it together since I used what was posted and didn't buy it directly. I assume it comes with at least a little bit of instruction if you buy it from her etsy?

Sorry to request, but does anyone have any cute patterns for a floppy/rag-doll-y dog or wolf plush? Something that would be nice to cuddle with, and maybe a bit large.
I had to give up my dog a few days ago, and my heart is broken. I just need something to keep me busy and to fill the void for now.
