I doubt your hair has that much body/volume. Like most of the characters, Smoky Quartz has a lot of hair. It may be a normal color and style but it's likely not going to look as good as it could with a wig. Go ahead and do what you want since you're that against it.

So here's the thing, most Steven Universe cosplays look like shit because it's a heavily stylized cartoon. For something like a live action movie or series, or a realistic looking vidya, you might get away with your real hair, because your character will look like a real person anyway.

Steven Universe, though? Not only does almost all the characters have hair with volume/texture that is entirely unobtainable for most people, it's also so heavily stylized that without that improbable hair, you just won't be recognizable as one of the characters.

There are shows where making character designs more realistic works, in that it looks good and is still recognizable. Steven Universe is not one of those.

Hey, I know you're frustrated, but please believe that a wig would do wonders for your cosplay. You don't need to spend a huge amount of money on one (pic related is one I found with relative ease, it's $13, and brushing out the curls would give great volume and curls for Smokey). It seems unnecessary and small, but it will really make you resemble the character more, and you wont have to worry about styling your hair each morning that you decide to wear the cosplay. SU characters always have super fluffy, voluminous hair, and a wig is much easier to tease and style and to hold the style. The reason people are saying to please get a wig is that unlike real hair, you won't have sweat at the roots destroying what volume you create. You won't get shiny with oils. You style will actually stay put without as much touchups. Most wigs aren't that pricey. You just need to know how to shop for them. 2 $10 eBay wigs sewn together could easily look better than a $65 Arda wig when done properly.

It wouldn't be as effortless as the Jareth was for me (the wig is pre-teased to give more volume and ease toward spiking and volume, as well as the huge amount of layers helps the rocker look imo), but it wouldn't be impossible, it would just require more time and effort. Hi, so I've never asked for help on /cgl/ or even been here before so excuse me If I am out of order. I have a con I am going to at the start of November and I am going as Greg (old not young) because my friend is going as Buck Dewey and it seemed like a good idea. The only issue is while I can figure out the sun burn and clothes I don't know how I'd do the wig and bald cap together.

It could be? If you feel like doing this over again, you can definitely do a Jasper/Jojo-crossover; exaggerate, emphasise so there's a definite link between the two. Jasper's a canon buff character, make a stand, apply the Jojo Line Make-up, I don't know.

I can't make myself small and fat, I never said it wasn't lazily put together I just don't know why you're hellbent on a cosplay "making sense", "being canon" or whatever.

I'd definitely put together a shield and try to Jojo-fy it a lot more. For crossovers to stick, you really have to go all in.

Take your time with it next time and try to add some key elements from both shows to drive it home. I think your makeup looks good which is more than most other Jojo cosplays so fixing the costume will help a lot.

It's your second cosplay so of course it won't be perfect. My first two cosplays were pretty shit but I kept improving one and now it's one that people always compliment me on. Just keep at it! The key is to take helpful advice/con crit and apply it.

Since you seem to genuinely want advice, and also because you asked while I was writing my megapost, other anon >>9215975 is right.
Try to incorporate more from both. Your crossover right now is just "Steven but has Jojo line-art". Like I said before, if you feel like doing this again in the future, add to it. Make Jotaro's cap, think of a funny way to stand-ify one of the gems (maybe there's fanart of that?) and have a little prop stand or another cosplayer. If you just want to cosplay Steven, your own suggestions of shield and gem would definitely improve it.

That's just what cosplay is, to try and replicate the character irl as much as the source material. It's exactly for this reason /cgl/ in general doesn't like crossplays, actually. Most cosplayers care about accuracy and canon a lot. If you don't care, that's fair enough, but don't be surprised if others call you out on it.

I don't think it's possible to realistically put a belly button on shapewear, zentai suit, etc. I've seen cosplayers irl try to accomplish it but it often just looks... off. My best suggestion would be to choose shapewear that matches your skin tone really well, then tie the flannel higher on your waist so that it hides where your navel would be (and maybe get jeans that sit higher up too, so there's not a gap of skin between the flannel and the jeans)

There's been discussions on this in the past, but basically from what I can remember it's that if you want huge curls, you need some sort of support (drill curls with a base underneath). If you're willing to have smaller curls, you can do ringlets and barrel curls by curling your wig (and just having lots of those). Pic related is cbc's wig that mixes drill curls and ringlets

for rose quartz i decided to go with something more realistic so i didnt look like shit and got http://www.rockstarwigs.com/collections/baby-dollight/products/baby-dollight-deep-pink
which is working really well, but is not as big as it seems in the picture, and instead of having the pigtails in the sides, i put them in the back on the top to try and give some mass. If anyone want pics of the real wig i'm happy to provide.

try prosaide- its a medical adhesive and i find it sticks on gems really well (so long as it isnt incredibly heavy). i would advise her to not lean against anything to keep it from getting bumped off.

Even prosaide or spirit gum won't keep a heavy item on for long - if you made it out of clay there's no adhesive in the world that will do a good job. If you did use something lightweight like silicone, make sure her skin is completely washed and clean before sticking it on (don't paint her until after the gem is in place), otherwise the dirt or creme will just make the gem fall right off.

SU seagulls, I'm planning a Smoky Quartz cosplay for a future con. My plan at the moment is to make a bodysuit and have my face painted but was just wondering if anyone had recommendations on face paint to use? I'm happy with mixing purple with black if that helps get the right shade.

im always a fan of mehron paradise (goes on smooth and opaque, plus it smells like coconuts), but TAG and snazaroo are my other two favorites. I like the idea of mixing paint because smokey is a weird shade of dark grey/purple that's most likely unavailable in most ranges of paint. post some photos if you get the color nailed down!
