It's a convention, it's relevant. Take your bait salt elsewhere.

It's mostly a hangout con. You go to hang out with people, but that's about it. Some panels might be decent, idk, and if you're a fan of some of the guests, it's a great con to meet them at since it's nice and intimate.

Bishie Auction is actually kind of a good time, either because of occasional decent skits or because of that cringe factor. It's a nice mix of the two, so it's never a complete trainwreck.

I hear Yaoi Bingo is also fun, but I've never gone.

There really isn't much of a party scene since hotel security is pretty anal about noise. Last year, we were kind of milling around the lobby, and they kept trailing us and telling us to go elsewhere. Unless you have a room, there isn't much in terms of "hanging out" after hours.

As such panels are stuck between AM and afternoon hours as they do not want anything conflicting with the main events.

My opinion of Yaoicon is that its fun to attend but god help you if you work there. It's really upsetting to hear that many of the bishis that pull in triple digits at the auction and bingo (all of which the con pockets) don't get room or a free badge unless they work the designated amount of hours volunteering.

Oh, the con also sells calendars of the bishis and once again they don't get a dime.

I'll be honest with you guys, this con sucks for parties and social gatherings because the hotel is so uptight. Unless you're bringing some people back to your room for a quiet orgy or a one night stand or just a chill drinking session that doesn't go above whisper voices then forget it.
I even heard some of my friends from last year are ditching the con to go to an outdoor weekend retreat to get really wild which in my opinion they're going to have ten times more fun getting drunk and sucking dick in the woods than they would at yaoicon.

Disclaimer: I'm a straight dude with no interest in yaoi from a sexual standpoint. I heard about this con from a panel a friend dragged me to back at anime expo.
In the panel they were talking about an auction where people buy boys to take them on dates or something, and they hinted that they were allowed to fuck. I haven't been able to forget that, mainly because if that shit was reversed and you auctioned girls there'd be a fucking crusade, but also because it seems hilarious. They're pretty strict about what you can and cannot do with the boys. Fucking is definitely on the "cannot" list, at least for the contracted time you've bought them for. Whatever happens after that is up for grabs, though. It's probably more a legal precaution than anything else. Since this is the big money maker for the con, it makes sense that they'll guard their asses very carefully.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure it can't be super hard to find something. If you're asking on /cgl/, though, maybe you don't have enough game to get some anyway.

The past few years they've had some older bl mangaka that are kinda passe. I'd be excited if they had someone like Scarlet Beriko, Est Em, Sakurai Rihito(sp) or Asumiko Nakamura but I think it has to do with the publishing company that's now funding the con. This happens with women all the time. This thing you're talking about is typically a charity auction and is nothing new; women were mostly commonly up for auction until maybe the mid 80's or so when it became more common to start mixing men into the auctions as well.

Anyway, you're just buying their time for a conversation and the "date" doesn't typically leave the location that the auctions are held at. If you do end up liking each other, that's for something else but typically all you can do is talk.

I love BL (although mostly on the bara side, not so much on the typical bishies) so I've been interested in Yaoicon but not enough to travel for it. I'm never particularly interested in the guests they have but I would throw my money for someone like Yoneda Kou or the very unlikely chance of Mentaiko.

Disappointed but not surprised Yaoicon caters to the bishie side of BL though. What's the typical vibe of Yaoicon compared to a normal anime con though?

DMP is a manga publisher that used to have a lot of yaoi licenses and they'd go overboard with getting scans deleted and sending out DMCA's to online translators. The thing is that they would do really small print runs on their manga or just not finish publishing them, and now most of their recent titles are ebook only. They also try to get the most money out of people who buy manga by using kickstarter to fund reprintings of their yaoi manga or licenses for "premium" editions of classic manga.

They were also infamous for hiring translators that they'd only pay a few cents per page through an online program to translate manga. Another weird story was how they lost a ton of money because of some guy buying a shitton of stock from them for a bookstore with a loan that he wasn't able to pay back. Someone related to this incident even posted about it on /a/ a couple years ago with pictures of all the yaoi manga that was bought (it's probably been lost because the archive websites are a mess, but I was there for the thread).

Lastly they just lost all the yaoi manga licenses they had with the Japanese publisher Libre, so lord knows what direction they can go in with gay porn now. But they just made a ton of money with Kickstarter by licensing Kodomo no Jikan, which is a lolicon manga series. They know they can stay afloat by targeting perverts and manga collectors willing to spend a lot of money.

Last year, they kicked a group of us out of the common areas (lobby and second floor around the bar) twice, around 10:00 PM.

Later in the night, we got a warning with 5 people in the room. When I asked if there was a noise complaint, he said 'no, but it's quiet hours and I can hear people through the door.'

Another person reported hotel staff patrolling the hallways around midnight, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm skipping this year for a weekend long party with my party group, but I'd really prefer a different hotel.

Here at Day Zero, wanted to post some recon.

They remodeled the lobby/atrium quite a bit, in fact they removed that sports bar & grill. Replaced it with more board rooms, which is probably better for programming but less eats on-site.

They also ramped up the old atrium bar and added a market alongside. Cocktail average is 12, beer 8-9.

The lightrail system for San Jose area literally stops right in front of the Santa Clara Convention Center though, which is what the Hyatt Santa Clara is connected too.

Lightrail has stop at the train station in San Jose and Mountain View and shuttles from the San Jose airport.

It was a chill con overall, they could have had a better panelist system since 2 panels I tried to attend both had their organizers be no-shows and the staff didnt know what happened to them.

I did like how chill their manga library room was though, and the division of AA and dealers meant neither got too crowded.

It was bizarre they had the swap meet run during the day at the same time dealers and AA was open

As a straight man that attended all 3 days I'm glad that I did to experience all the aspects of the con. Also given that the price difference is negligible when pre-regging you might as well.

I probably had a better time at the auction than some since I was pretty buzzed from drinking all day, I know some people thought it was too cringe and left and others who were kinda meh about it. But I think it's one of those events that you just have to get into the spirit of it or be really into the guys, either way it was interesting to watch.
