Old thread is falling fast.

Autumn/Winter 2016 con plans? Meetups? Etc?
>>
Anything other than Unplugged happening relatively soon? I just got my Rem cosplay and it would be a shame to not be able to wear it anywhere.

Also Im not going to post a picture yet, this thread is too new for me to shit up.
>>
>>9174617
Don't go to Unplugged. Please please please let that convention die. The runner is well-intentioned but the rest of the staff are rude, incompetent people and the show is gaaaarbage.
>>
>>9174647
I just want to go for the AA desu. I still have blank space on my walls that I want to cover and I was way too hung over on the Sunday of Conbravo to go back and buy the prints that I wanted.
>>
>>9174647
Yes I second this. Several years now of horrible experiwnce with the staff. Also their master of cosplay thing is ridiculous and I'm admittedly salty over it.
>>
>>9174617

what's unplugged and where is it?

also does anyone know how much comiccon is for a day? i hate normie superhero garbage but im thinking of making a pokemon cosplay for a change and maybe attending a single day just because i miss going to a con and there's fuck all to do in ottawa
>>
>>9174617

For real don't both with Unplugged, its a crap con, line on level with frostcon and its just a mess, not worth it

The Great Escape is about the author's grandmother's escape from north korea.

The love live book came with a free ziplock file holder!
>>
For those interested in the meetup, let's go ahead with the 17th. Since we already went to a Izakaya at a previous meetup, let's go Kinton Ramen followed by boardgames at Snakes and Lattes. Kinton Ramen is located on Bloor near Christie, and Snakes and Lattes is located on Bloor near Bathurst. Let's meet at 7pm in front of Kinton Ramen.
>>
Part of me wants to shill London Comic Con, but sadly, I'm not sure if there's gonna be enough for peeps to see to justify an out of town trip (if you live in the GTA, anyways).

Y'all should definitely come out for Forest City Comic Con though. It was a really chill and fun small con. Saw lots of nice cosplays considering the size.
>>
>>9175033
the two are not really comparable at all.

unplugged actually tries to get guests like the sailor moon voice actors amongst others and to try their best but it's still ends up being subpar. their last show was in a bad location in the mid-summer... a very bad time to compete with other cons.

at least with unplugged you're dealing with something relatively well organized by professional seeming people. frostcon is just a glorified opportunity and excuse for the cosplay community to have some reason to meet up at all indoors in winter. If it were to be held any other time of year it would be even more apparent that it is Toronto's worst convention.

frostcon is known for doing really shady stuff, like their coat check and bag storage room. it was so unorganized that people had to walk in the and find their stuff in the sea of people's belongings. it was just a huge room of backpacks and coats thrown onto the floor and as a result a lot of people's things were damaged/stolen. pretty shady stuff. if you go to frostcon, protect your belongings, and don't trust the coat check.
>>
>>9177912
Sounds good, i'm fine with the 17th. Is it easy to get a table at Snakes&Lattes?
>>
>>9177912
Should I make a facebook event for this? There seems to be a bit more interest than the last few gatherings.
>>
>>9177912
Sounds good, hopefully I'm not working that day.
>>
>>9179157
I suppose it wouldn't hurt
>>
>>9179150
I dunno, as I've never been before. But if we have to wait for a table, we can kill some time going to Pat Mart and trying some Taiyaki.

Unplugged is better than frostcon, but only because it's really hard to be as shitty as frostcon.

Unplugged was a ghost town last time I went. Waste of money, waste of space. It wasn't poorly run, just, there wasn't anything to do. Boring with a side of salty staff.

Frostcon is run by people who can barely hold it together, and a bunch of kids who shouldn't be allowed out side without parental supervision. 90% of staff are the cringe worthy people you avoid at cons- only they've been given a tiny bit of authority and they're either going to drop the ball, or abuse it.

Don't bother with either. Love yourself and just drive/greyhound across the border for Youmacon if you're super desperate.

Hell, what was that January convention this year that popped up? It seemed to go over rather well, and I'd actually be interested in tabling this year.
>>
>>9180230
That custard one is calling to me like a mermaid pastry.
>>
>>9179316
Sadly it's the same day as Jellycon (which is a cosplay beach party).
>>
>>9178779 >>9181062
Yet Unplugged's attendance is going down and FrostCon's has only gone up over the years.

Also your comparing an all things geek con to a costume/cosplay con
>>
>>9178779 >>9181062
I'm with >>9181749 and quiet enjoy FrostCon. It's not my favorite con, but it's not my least liked con

>FrostCon
Hi Antonio!
>>
>>9181764
A Facebook event page might be a good idea, so we know who's going or not. Since otherwise there's Jellycon
>>
>>9181913
Not everyone who supports or enjoys FrostCon is Antonio or the other staff. So hard to believe that there might actually be people who do enjoy and care about that con
>>
>>9181606
Link? Google's only giving info about previous years. Is it a somewhat private event?
>>
>>9182207
Jellycon's usually a facebook event, it's not a legitimate convention... Just like a cosplay meet kind of thing. fb @ events/633972206767212/
>>
>>9181749
>>9181756

Does anyone know when FrostCon is going to even happen this winter? How about Anime Shogatsu?

Hopefully they're spaced out enough from each other so that there's no weird competition issues. Antonio has been known to be petty and competitive with basically everyone... remember his "Winter Wonderland" event that was on the same day as Shogatsu? It was shortly after his failure there that he started to bully and lie to the Kariya Park people, CHG, etc. He was so butthurt.
>>
>>9181749
>Frostcon's coat check had people's things lost and stolen due to staff incompetence
>"But FrostCon's attendance is only going up!"

There's somebody on 4chan Canada threads that consistently can never differentiate the proper usage of "your" and "you're". They always rush to defend Antonio. It's no surprise that they're here defending Frostcon.

It's funny tho because they're defending it in the worst way from the worst angle.

I might go, but I feel more at ease if there's a decent proportion of uni students there.

I'm a bit picky when it comes to who to hang out with, for example I visited a cosplay friend the other day and it was a very scary experience since she was basically a circa 2005 emo girl who actually cuts herself, throws tantrums, and only keeps herself afloat by working at Shoppers.

Fyi for those interested, the next boardgames meetup is scheduled for Saturday October 22nd. We're gonna try and setup a fb page for the event and make a reservation at Snakes and Lattes.

We haven't decided on where we'll be going out to eat yet. Another member suggested AYCE KBBQ. But if people don't mind traveling a bit, maybe we could try a restaurant called Bistro Camino? (near Main/Danforth). It's a fusion restaurant, which pairs classical French cuisine with some Japanese influence.

quick question, going to anime north for the first time next year (summer 2017) and i was wondering what the night time of it was like?
im thinking of doing normal cosplays for the day time but after dinner time if there were dances or events i'd like to dress up a little more adult. would it be worth it to bring more costumes or does everyone head out after 9pm?

(the only reason i'm curious is that i don't want to be too lewd around younger kids and i'd rather showcase actual costumes i made first)
>>
>>9190850
Most of the older folks that attend the con just do room parties, drinking booze and smoking weed. Not sure about adult dances, other than the rave?
>>
>>9190328
Link to fb?
>>
Jellycon did end up happening and the weather was warm and perfect for the entire day.

Anime north has the Moonlight Ball as a semi-formal dance that skews older. Costumes are encouraged, but more as in fancy evening dress adult than lewd adult.

I'm just waiting for a confirmation on where we will be going for food.
>>
>>9193128
Fair enough. I figure we have two options, and we can put it up to a vote.

1) Kasai Grill House for AYCE KBBQ and Sushi, followed by boardgames at Snakes and Lattes on College and Bathurst.
(the restaurant is about a 5-10min walk from Snakes and Lattes).
http://www.kasaigrillhouse.com/

2) Bistro Camino for French/Japanese food, followed by boardgames at Snakes and Lattes on Bloor and Bathurst.
(The restaurant is about a 20min subway ride from Snakes and Lattes on Bloor).
https://www.zomato.com/toronto/bistro-camino-east-danforth

The first option is definitely more convenient and slightly cheaper than the second option. While option two provides more unique and better food.

In general I would say everyone who comes to these meetups are quite open and friendly. We only had one hiccup where someone approached us while we were waiting outside a restaurant, asked if were from 4chan and than immediately ditched us.

Only a handful of us get together for these meetups. Which actually works to our favour when grabbing food, meeting new people and having conversations. For example, one of our regulars mentioned an upcoming music event called "Next Music from Tokyo" that I otherwise wouldn't have known about:

FrostCon's in Burlington now, and two days

Anyone going to that?
>>
>>9197177
If Anime Shogatsu is in January and still in Toronto, I see absolutely no point in going to Frostcon unless you live in Burtlington
>>
>>9177938
This anon is right Forest City Comic Con is great.
>>
>>9197177
I've been to frostcon twice and enjoyed myself but I really can't see myself traveling to Burlington in the cold ... Gonna sit this one out.
>>
>>9197210
is anime shogatsu the next upcoming con?
>>
>>9198206
No. There's London Comic Con this weekend. And Hamilton Comic Con, Unplugged Expo, Windsor Comic Con, Thundercon, Forest City Comicon and Quinte Mini Con still to go this year.

Unless your talking about up-and-coming cons. Think that goes to Forest City Comicon for the cons younger then 5 years
>>
>>9198306
London Comic Con is younger than Forest City actually, and it really really sucks. FCC's the superior choice.

Also is Quinte even still going? I'm horrified if it is.
>>
>>9198206
>>9197210
No. It's tiny and while not bad it doesn't really warrant any real attention yet. It's like first year Con-G but without any heart.
>>
>>9198350
That's why I didn't mention LCC as the best newest convention out there. FCCC has it hands down, with Yeticon following behind it.
>>
>>9198350
Yeah QMC is still a thing. Atleast EMC is gone.
>>
>>9198354
I don't really agree. It is definitely a baby con and not the greatest... but way better than going to nowhere for Frost con.
>>
>>9198699
Then you sir are wrong. Anime Shogatsu is just as the person described. As for calling Burlington nowhere, remember that ConBravo used that same venue for 2 years.
>>
>>9197210 >>9198206 >>9198699 >>9198813
I think the only reason Anime Shogatsu happened last year was because their was no FrostCon and for Unplugged to regain some of their loses after failing their own show.

Shows that the community wants a winter convention now that Con-G is gone. Not saying that FrostCon or Shogatsu will live up to Con-G standards. But least FrostCon staff try and care about their attendees more so then Shogatsu does
>>
Winter cons in Ontario rank as follows. 1st - Con-G, 2nd - Futurecon, 3rd - NYE ToyCon, 4th - FrostCon, 5th - Anime Shotgatsu, 6th - Tri-Con, 7th - DTAC and 8th - EMC.

Also theirs supposed to be a new convention starting in Toronto called Project KITA either this winter or next(2018)
>>
>>9198822
even though there are some Unplugged staff working at Shogatsu, Shogatsu isn't actually runned by Unplugged themselves. Different con chair, different methods.
>>
>>9198843
> Winter cons in Ontario rank as follows. 1st - Con-G, 2nd - Futurecon, 3rd - NYE ToyCon, 4th - FrostCon, 5th - Anime Shotgatsu, 6th - Tri-Con, 7th - DTAC and 8th - EMC.

Frostcon before Anime Shogatsu?
>>
>>9198843
As a cosplayer, maybe.
As an artist, DTAC brings in the most profit for me. I'd still put anything in front of Frostcon though.
>>
>>9199409
Totally. I've attended both, along with all the other listed cons and that's how they rank against each other.

>>9199427
As anything, for sure. It's not Con-G great, but it's better then most of the other Ontario winter cons
>>
Any Edmontonion cosplayer's here? I have zero experience at cosplaying and I would like to meet up with someone who has experience in cosplays to teach me. I'll buy coffee and donuts for each meeting!
>>
>>9198813
But they moved right? Probably for a reason. It's still very out of the way/inconvenient and so I summarize that by calling it nowhere.

Frost con wasn't my thing anyway. I'm glad other people get enjoyment out of it but I simply did not. It's probably my least favourite of ontario's winter cons.
>>
>>9199667
YOU DARE!? YOU DARE!?
>>
>>9199670
I so fucking dare.
>>
Upcoming Ontario cons for cosplay? I've only been to AN and Fan Expo. I don't really care much for merch or panels. I mostly like to people watch while I'm there.
>>
Nobody talking about Edmonton Expo?
>>
>>9199667
We moved largely because the venue was becoming too small and because it was out of the way, yeah. One of the primary issues was that the actual GO Transit was a bit of a walk, whereas in Hamilton it's literally next door.
>>
Was con g actually good? I decided to skip it and then suddenly it was gone forever. I assumed it was underperforming as a result
>>
>>9200787
It was a good little winter con it ended because the staff didn't want to run it anymore and didn't want to pass on the name (to the point were another con under a different name got flack for booking the same venue on the weekend con g was on for the year after con g ended)
>>
>>9200787
It was the original "doing it right" con. Unsurprisingly some of the staff moved on to ConBravo which is the other success story as far as small-to-medium cons in Ontario go. Everything else has continued to be mediocre (Unplugged, Shogatsu), absolute garbage (EMC, Frostcon), or really offbeat and kind of con-ish without being a con (Apop).

Or I guess comicons, but I don't really count those.
>>
>>9200005
I know right! I heard someone proposed at Edmonton expo and I can't believe I missed that!
>>
>>9200873
Think your forgetting about Forest City, it can be grouped in as a success story con. Also don't group ever group FrostCon with EMC, literally EMC is unrivaled in garbageness.
>>
>>9200873
There's no way Shogatsu tops FrostCon. I've been attending conventions for 10+ years and Shogatsu was absolute garbage compared to FrostCon. Now I'll say FrostCon isn't the best convention out there of the current roster of cons, that goes to Bravo and FCCC. But I will also give credit where credit is due, they do try their best and care about the people that attend their convention. So I'd place it about middle of the road for all current conventions
>>
>>9201001
FCCC's a comicon so I consider them in that category. Not really the same type of event overall.

You're right. I shouldn't. I didn't mean to say Frostcon was the same kind of garbage as EMC. I meant to say that it is an even worse kind of garbage than EMC, because its organizers haven't vanished from the conrunning scene and are trying to run it again, thereby spreading around MORE garbage.

Feel the same way. I've never had good experiences with frostcon staff, either mediocre or shit. And literally nothing about the con is particularly good either. I have no idea why people would bother going all the way to Burlington for it but that's just me.

Lawl, your an idiot if you think FrostCon is worst then EMC. Only one convention ever is worst then EMC and that's Con No Baka.
>>
>>9201919
Your totally right. I forgot about that disaster of a convention. Nothing will ever beat EMC or Con No Baka as being the worst conventions in Ontario
>>

What could make Shogatsu worse than FrostCon? They seem nearly identical ... 1 day shopping event that wraps up quickly as the sun goes down. Just that there was less people? What makes it "absolute garbage"???

Or maybe people are done with hating FrostCon and are starting to accept it as a valid convention. Now that it's come into it's own identity and Anthony isn't the one calling the shots
>>
>>9201982
I thought people hated Frost Con not only because of it's association with Antonio, but because it was poorly managed and the staff were arrogant and rude to boot? An example being the coat check being a complete shit show, with people missing or having their stuff stolen.
>>
>>9201990
Most people hate it just because of Antonio. That seems to be the only reason I've ever gathered from viewing the FC hate threads here

All the good stuff is usually in the downtown core. Last year I got dragged by a friend to the fringes of the event and we waited 30 minutes to walk through some shitty art installation. They kept telling us "a few more minutes" as they were fiddling with it. I'm not going with that guy again.

Who cares? The fancy cupcakes at the JCCC Halloween thing are actually fantastic.

Surprise surprise, they trust the organizer to be safe.

They don't want some kid to eat a "no peanut" peanut-containing cupcake from some random vendor who will probably just avoid responsibility anyway as the kid needs to be stabbed with an epi-pen.

For those interested in joining us for a boardgame meetup, we're planning another meetup on Saturday Nov 19th.

Another member brought up how we haven't been able to secure a spot to hold and play boardgames since Castle Boardgames closed, and recommended another shop called "Face to Face Games" located on Woodbine and Danforth. I checked out their hours and operations, and they close really early (8:00pm on Saturdays). So I don't think it's doable.

I found another shop in the area called "Time Capsule Boardgames" that closes later (1:00am on Saturdays), which I think is a more viable option.

If someone else has another location in mind, or could recommend a shop that isn't packed on Saturdays and doesn't close early please let us know. Thanks!

Otherwise we'll go with Time Capsule Boardgames. For food, we can check out "Bistro Camino" since it's in the area (Main and Danforth) and only a 10min walk to Time Capsule Boardgames.

I was wondering if there are any cons coming up in like the next 3 or 4 months in Ontario (preferably Toronto)
>>

$10 for a one day thing isn't bad but it's just a dealer's room/aa. If there were some kind of video or tabletop games or other activities going on I might go.

Time Capsule and Bistro Camino looks good. I would suggest calling time capsule to check how busy they are on Saturdays.

As an alternative, there's A-Game Cafe. It's right on Queen next to Osgoode station, and they take reservations so we can have guaranteed seats. Open til 2am.

I'm not familiar with the food in the area but I did spot these two nearby. https://www.yelp.ca/biz/peter-pan-bistro-toronto

If there's no other suggestions, can we settle on Time Capsue+Camino and make the facebook event?
>>
>>9251566
Sure. We'll just go with Bistro Camino and Time Capsule Boardgames for next Saturday Nov 19th. We'll meet outside Bistro Camino at 5:30pm, and than head to Time Capsule Boardgames immediately afterwards.

If Nekkomancer could do the honours of making/posting a facebook page, than that would be appreciated!

I applied for an AA at Shogatsu in case anyone still needs a Toronto Seagull pin, haha.

And I still have tons of stock from this year so as long as I make $50, which I had no issues doing last year.
>>
>>9257326
Totally getting one

I missed getting a pin at AN, definitely getting there early to grab one.

Sorry man, I've been extremely busy at work and I haven't had the chance to make an event page.
Also I'm not sure if I can make it Saturday due to work.
>>
>>9258465
That's ok, people have busy lives. There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest for a boardgame meetup this Saturday anyways, so we might as well cancel and reschedule it for another day.
>>
>>9257294
yeah, they've started to announce guests and stuff
