so I'm working on a Pearl cosplay for Youmacon. I use my forearm crutches at conventions, do you think it might look too stupid if I decorate them like Pearl's spears instead of just leaving them plain?

Im pointing out how to make a photo better if the cosplayers and photographers actually tried and you want to know if I am okay? Sorry if this is your photoshoot, but it is horrible. The editing isn't just bad, but the posing and the framework are horrible. The photos are overly processed which make them look so overly exposed its insulting to the cosplayers who actually have decent outfits. All the sake of trying to make the images look super gritty? Spare me.

If youre one of the cosplayers, get a better photographer and editor and maybe learn how to pose yourself if your cosplay friends of photographer doesn't know how.

If you're the photographer, take some time to learn about 3-points, how to pose models/suggest poses for models, and learn how to edit properly without sacrificing the image itself and ruining the people in them.

Seconding this, the cosplays are beautiful don't get me wrong, but I'm almost convinced that the photos were taken on a smart phone from 2012. The photographer needs to work on photo composition.
Also, the second picture really hurts me, Pearl is my favorite character and I would have loved to see a great photo of her, but it seems the branches are more in focus than her.

No one is saying the cosplays are bad. The photographer, the set, the posing, the editing, the layout of the images, what is in focus. These are all horrible. The cosplayers are fine, but everything else involving these images need a lot of work. The photographer mostly. It would help if the cosplayers had any energy to them, but even if they did it wouldn't save the composition of these images as a whole. Like seriously. This whole set is so bad. What even is this image? The cosplay is fine, but the photographer is giving no direction to the poor girl and she doesn't even seem to know how to pose. The location isn't that great either. The only time they went to a location like this was when they were on their guard. Pearl wouldn't be this chill. The hangout image with the donuts would've been better off on a dock somewhere or on the beach. This looks like she should be on top of a hill or some shit. Not flouncing around in a cave carefree.

“The base is made out of 5 pieces of thin plywood - palm, forearm, upper arm, a small one at the top which is held in place with a joint to a bit longer piece (that I can stick under my bra to actually wear them).
They pieces are connected with hinges, (spinning) joints and self made ball joints. (I’m not sure what the correct terms are in english or even in finnish..)

So, the order is like:
[palm] (hinge) [forearm] (“ball joint”) [upper arm] (hinge) [the small piece & a joint through it] [ the longer piece under the smaller one]

The arm shape is made with some foam I found at the hardware store. It was already round and hollow so I just pit it over the eood bases with it and I then made the wrist-part smaller. The hand/palm is insulation foam I carved to resemble a hand, and the fingers have joints made out of steel wire so that they’re bendable. I put a layer of cotton over the whole thing and covered it with the "skin” fabric."

Lol. A lot of the images on here aren't photoshoot images. These are part of a whole set. That's a huge difference between someone standing outside of a convention center or taking a photo in a backyard. These were legit set up to be amazing and they are far from it. Some of the shittier cosplays in this thread have better image quality and composition than this set too. Get over it. Cry to tumblr. Go tell them what they already know about 4chan.

It is. When good cosplays/photos are posted, people say as such, but when shitty photos are posted, people will laugh and nitpick. Literally scroll up and you will see this with other photos. I am guessing you rolled in here without actually looking at the thread, so as a tip it is generally a poor idea to get hyperdefensive like you are doing - it just feeds the sharks and people will continue to reply to you until you stop posting.

I am also guessing you know these cosplayers in some way (since it's doubtful you'd be defending them so thoroughly if it was just some rando photo you found), so as another tip it's a very bad idea to post your friends here unless the cosplays and photos are above average quality.

Question. What so you guys think about taking something like these muscle arm socks to do Jasper? We obviously will never have a buff female to do her, so fabricating the muscles would be the next step I would think? What are the opinions? It would take someone with patience to airbrush thats for sure, but considering her outfit, I don't think it would be too hard to make these pretty seamless.

I think you're being too hard on yourself. Anyone can cosplay with the right amount of confidence. That being said, if you don't feel you have the confidence right now, you're likely better off with a character you already feel more in tune with so you can bring out their presence more readily during picture-taking sessions.

I can also see the appeal of solid yellow over less even paint, but I don't think anyone has tried that yet. At least the consensus among Blue Pearl cosplayers seems to be that paint/armsocks is (are) the way to go. Heck, I think I've even seen a couple regular Pearls paint themselves up chalk white, though I'll need to go digging through my images to find them.

She's pretty sallow colored as is. Im the one who posted the images since anon asked for the left image of that collage and I thought I would drag the frontal image in also. I feel like she is more or less using her sallow skin as a highlight to the yellow she stippled on. I like it from away personally, but up close it looks messy in the way the paint was applied. If it were applied neater it would be good without being fully yellow, but its more haphazardly applied if anything.

We were actually trying to match the wig as closely as possible to the color of the spandex. What would you suggest for styling? It's an Arda Magnum and all I really did was some minimal finger teasing. We did not do a lot of fitting sessions; the goal was to get it done as quickly as possible in the two week span leading up to Amke, though I'd been researching and planning and gathering materials for a couple months at that point (by the time we got the spandex and welovecolors stuff and pattern all together, there were about two weeks left before the con).

I'm pretty inexperienced myself with wig styling so definitely take my advice with a grain of salt.
The only thing that throws me off about the wig (Fair enough with it being the same color as the spandex, good call imo) is that it definitely needs some more volume. Blue pearl's hair looks very soft and fluffy. I don't like teasing/backcombing wigs because I'm really not good at it so I use schwarzkopf volume powder. I'll usually just sprinkle a bit on the roots and just work it through by teasing it up there, then work through the length of the wig. It should work really well with a short wig like the one you have!

I think a different wig would've suited her better; the magnum is a bit too flippy/layered? I think I would go with the inigo and cut it to the right length to get the correct look.
Colors are a bit off as well; I think the periwinkle color or powder blue would've done better; it just looks a bit overly saturated/contrasted (along with the color of the spandex)
The fitting of the armsocks/bodysuit is a bit off, as the other anon mentioned, and I'm not too sure the design on the translucent parts suits her (although I realize it is artistic liberty).

I partially blame the over saturation on the photographer desu; that's just how she likes to edit her images. If I can get the funds, I'll look into getting my hands on Inigo so I can try your method. This is also the first time friend or I dealt with any sort of body suit; what are good things to do when checking for fit in the future? The armsocks are sewn directly into the spandex, and the whole thing zips up in back. Trust me, friend and I spent a good chunk of time comparing and contrasting colors since she happens to have their ring of color samples, and I know we considered both of those colors, but ultimately, the slate matched the spandex best.

I think she just highlighted the high points of her body instead of trying to paint and seal her whole body which tends to go south. I really like the idea of this if you have the same undertones of a character (yellow, pink.) That's rough. Which product were you using? The creamblend sticks can be pretty limited in color range. I had to use their Paradise AQ in light blue for Blue Pearl. You might want to look into getting a couple cakes of Ben Nye and mixing them to get the correct shade (a lot of Homestuck cosplayers took that route prior to knowing about the Mehron stuff, and some still prefer that method)

I was kind of thinking that too, even if the others have the volume the curls are just so tight. Everything else is more Kim K styled as far as wavy goes...

I don't plan to cut the length at all, just maybe add a few layers in the back. I'm gonna do some backcombind to give in volume up to the crown, then i'm gonna style the bang area with some umph as well. I'm gonna keep the part because stevonnie kind of has one, and that will look a lot better on me personally than trying to tease it up and straight back like Drag style...

But I am completely open to suggestions because wigs are tuff.

Anyone have any idea how to make Pearl's bangs (the ones that curl around her gem) look halfway natural? Many wigs look like the bangs were shoved to the side as an afterthought; or with styled bangs, they look like the wig is pulled and parted too low for the hairline to be realistic.
