Helmet: Gentex DH 123B Ballistic CVC Helmet with a Bose active hearing protection liner

Mask Components: Scott AV3000 SWAT SCBA mask mated to a Scott T-Bone dual Model 65 filter adapter which was modified to accept the hose running from my SCBA tank. The puck object on the left side is a Scott AV 3000 electric voice projection unit

Vest Components: Balackhawk! Omega Vest with 2 triple mp5 mag pouches mounted on both sides.Under the Blackhawk! vest is a OSFS NIJ III-A Concealable Bulletproof vest.
An Eagle Industries Deltoid protector is velcroed to the upper left side (the XOF unit patch is affixed to this).

Air Tank/ Harness: SCOTT Air Pak 4.5 with Wire Frame and Harness mated with a Interspiro Spiro SCBA 4500 PSI 30 minute air tank.

/k/fag here, no experience cosplaying.

I'm currently starting an M16A1 parts kit build that I'm planning on using for some 2- and 3-gun competitions, and it occurred to me that it would be all sorts of awesome to run a full Naked Snake kit to go with that. Pre-eyepatch, because I still have to, you know, shoot, and I'm right-eye dominant. Gonna have to track down a cheap-ish 1911A1 clone to modify as well, but I'll jump off that bridge when I get to it....

Anyway, as I said, I've absolutely no experience cosplaying and haven't the faintest idea of where to start. Whatever I do, it's going to have to be able to hold up to actual abuse, so Chinese-made lookalike shit is probably out of the picture.

Anyone have suggestions for my idiotic idea?

First of all good luck on your A1 build, I'm hoping that one day that I'll be able to build one myself since I've got some old Colt mags laying around that would fit perfectly with it.

Anyway, so the best place would probably be to go to any stores or sites you're used to for mil-surp clothing/equipment. As far as I'm aware of, most people end up going with real fatigues, vests, slings, etc. as needed. So as long as you don't go for knock-off shit, you'll be getting gear that'd be fun for use when shooting or whatever.

Now my question to you is: since you were planning on doing this along with your M16/1911, you were planning on doing so at home or even a range, right? Might seem like a dumb question, but since you've got no experience cosplaying I wanted to check that you knew that pretty much a majority of cons don't let in real weapons. Technically airsoft/bb guns are supposed to be banned at certain cons too (though a lot give leeway), so bringing anything real is a huge risk. Not trying to burst your bubble, but it helps to know beforehand.

Oh yeah, this is for the range, not cons. I'll be honest, I've never actually been to a con. It's just not for me, really. I wonder if they'd be okay with deactivated guns, though. The A1 has ended up getting a lot more expensive than I had planned. $700 for the kit is bad enough, but I still need to source a 20in government profile barrel, and now the place I was getting my lower from flaked out. I'd use a NoDak Spud, but they're sold out thanks to the clusterfuck in CA.
It's looking like it's gonna be a while before I can even start on the actual cosplay.

I actually already have a partial set of M1956 ILCE. I just need the field pack and some other small bits of kit. The STABO harness is definitely gonna be a bitch, though. Last time I saw one at a gun show, the seller was asking $600. Even repros are floating around $200, last I checked.
The beard's gonna suck, too. I can pull off the Snake look (similar face shape), but my beard inexplicably comes in two-tone (black goatee area, blond cheeks), so I'll have to dye it if I want to grow it out.

Oh, by the way, anyone know how to handle that rubbery-looking undershirt/wetsuit he wears? I was thinking a compression shirt might get the job done, but it's not perfect.

Take a compression shirt and sew/glue some rubber elbow pads and grommets. I know this picture isn't accurate to Snake Eater since he has the double ALICE belts from MGSV, but it gives good detail of the under shirt.

Honestly, I would advise against it, I used to 3 gun and when I first started I ran with a plate carrier, and slowly downgraded to a battle belt... The emphaisis is on speed and manuevarabilty + accuracy, and wearing a STABO rig that would inevitably dig into your crotch as you move around and run is going to be detrimental to your performance...

But I'll bite...

Rig: STABO Harness w/ an M56 belt, 2x M56 pouches on the right side, 2x M56 canteens on either side, Bianchi M12 holster on his left side, and an M61 buttpack inbetween his two canteen covers.

Uniform: 2nd Pattern Jungle Fatigues over his sneaking suit, a knee wrap over his left knee, and some fingerless gloves along with USGI jungle boots

Commo: RACAL RA-440 throat mic w/ radio (his codec radio doesn't exist, so if you want to wear one you're going to have to make it yourself with PVC, there are tutorials on the web on how to do this...)

Other stuff: his knife is a custom made knife but a Winkler knife looks close to it... His M1911 is a Springfield Armory model, Springfield offers the same custom work on Snake's gun as part of their custom line (I've called them and compared it out of boredom), the notches on his grip is something you'd have to make yourself...

I'm not really into the competitive side of 3-gun. I just use it as a means to sort of test kit. I do it a lot with historical gear. Not gonna lie, I wanna see how it would be for Snake to actually fight.
I'm actually trying to set up a 2-gun Action Challenge Match up here in MI, because it sort of fits that better. More practical, less competitive.

Honestly, anyone from the Modern Era these days. I see so so so much MGS3 and V. Heck at most meetups I go to there is maybe one Solid Snake of the bunch. But yeah I'd love to see any of the minor characters or the bosses (outside of Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolf). I would also kill to see a Dead Cell group.

I legitimately don't want to start shit with this, but I'm planning on cosplaying Meryl. Because I sort of want to have a mask to take on and off, I'm thinking of using my real hair. It's pretty much the right length and color and the con I'd do it for is a few months away which would allow for some adjustment. I think there are almost no MG/MG2 Cosplays because there's hardly any useable Source Material. There are cosplays from MGS because the polygon models look good enough and the artwork offers enough detail. But the MG1 Solid Snake honestly just looks like Kyle Reese from the Terminator.

I mean, you even could custom design that stuff, but that would just be basic military stuff from the era, hardly recognizable.

Oh there sure are lots of good ones. There have always been bad Metal Gear Cosplays. I guess it depends on the area and type of Convention. Here in Germany we have really good ones.

What we here sometimes have though is cosplayers that look good per se, but their costumes aren't accurate one bit. Maul Cosplays's Venom is a good example for that.

I once shaved my head, and it took six/seven months to get it to mulletman-level. The cool thing is that your hair naturally grows into a mullet if it all starts out evenly. I have thick brown hair like his, too. It's all grown out now though.

If you're planning on growing your hair out, though, make sure it's healthy and that you take good care of it as it grows. I used Shea Moisture (original formula) every two days or every other day once it got long enough to wash. My hair was Fabio-tier after a couple months of that.

I think you could grow it out, mane. In fact, I think you should, unless you're pretty experienced with wigs. But it's such an easy hairstyle to emulate, especially with your genes, that it'd make sense to use your own.
