Can I get some suggestions on how to decorate my office area? I want a science lab theme but all I have are the test tubes on the window sill holding office supplies. I don't really like how the shelves are set up so any suggestions on how to fix that up would be appreciated as well. The plastic drawers hold all my office/sewing supplies. I need my desk to stay as clear as possible since it's where I do my homework and like to spread all my papers out.

The grocery ad on the blinds is covering up some missing pieces and I would really like to replace it with something much cuter.

I'd really like to put a nice reading chair in my bedroom but its incredibly difficult to find something small with arms, the searches I've done either turn up slipper chairs or chairs for desks/dining.

Honestly it's hard to make suggestions for your space since I'm not really sure what you're going for. Science labs are streamlined, utilitarian spaces and your office space is not. Could you post some pics of the general vibe you're going for?

Ah man. Maybe "science lab" was too broad of a description. I meant using lab equipment like pic related as decorations. I haven't really seen any rooms for inspo but I know a few anons have mentioned in previous threads that they like/have lab equipment.

>Fleming's lab
I could never get anything done with a setting that messy. I do have some bottles like on the right side of the pic though - I just haven't been able to clean them (alcohol didn't work).

So in my bedroom and kitchen there are two huge skylights that give me natural light since my apartment doesn't have any windows in those rooms. I'll take pics when I get home, but does anybody have any recommendations on how to make them look nicer? They're sealed shut so I can't open them to clean the glass, and they just look gross. I've taped some old theatre posters to cover up the panels in my bedroom, but it doesn't look very nice t b h. Any examples or suggestions are most welcome, I don't want to completely black out the windows since they provide a lot of light but covering up the dirt in an aesthetically pleasing way would be nice.

Pic related except my ceiling is a bit higher, the window is a little smaller, and has three panels.

The problem is that when people think of "science labs" they picture minimalist, streamlined situations. With wood paneling like that you could make it look like a cozy, rich study.
>>
>>9153810

You mean you want ideas on what to put in them? I've usually seen them used as vases or terrariums, but essentially they're just funny-shaped jars, you can put whatever is convenient in them. Or just use them to serve yourself tea or juice.
>>
>>9153810
Anon was just telling you to look at Fleming's lab for decor inspo, not "literally make your workspace this messy" inspo. Your space is very much the opposite of what people imagine when they think of a "science lab" - sterile, white, neat, metal and white.

No no, I get what anon's intention was. I was just commenting on how I personally couldn't work in a messy setting more of as an aside.

Yeah, my area isn't exactly what you'd consider a "lab" setting. I guess I was really just looking for how to set up beakers and flasks as containers.

There was an Art Nouveau pharmacy on imgur today, reminded me of your space. It's really cute and vintage, but also pretty organized and scientific.

The main thing is to get some lighter elements into either the floor or the walls or both, just to balance the amount of wood in the room. Right now your non-wooden pieces are being poorly emphasized because they have nothing to blend with. The bright objects and blacks stick out like a sore thumb.

I didn't realize this was a reply to my post! I love the wood paneling and it definitely gives a good study vibe. I have so many random knick knacks that I'd probably get rid of a few in order to get a theme started (which I'm okay with, some of the things I have on display are there just for the heck of it). I'm not sure how sturdy the shelves are though so I probably can't pile on too many things.

>>9154222
How cute! I'm actually studying pharmacy so that's a fun coincidence.

The thing is this place is a rental so I can't really change much. Would some shelf liners like pic related work to break apart all that brown? Maybe a long, somewhat sheer curtain to go over the window and break apart the brown from the wall and my desk? The black bookshelves unfortunately have to stay since it's the only place they'll fit for now. I consider everything on the back wall my space anyway so I don't mind too much.

Found this idea on google. Two tension rods and a piece of fabric with loops sewn on either end for the tension rods to slip through. Like a double sided curtain.

Use a lightweight or gauzey fabric, and it shouldn't stop the light from coming through while still covering up the grime.
>>
Gulls with their own houses, what do your living and dining rooms look like? I feel like my house is all over the place just walking from the TV room through the kitchen to the sewing room etc.
>>
>>9154261
Like in an open floor plan? The key in open floor plans is to segment spaces into definable areas, usually through separation with shelves and tables, and definition with accent walls and carpets. Look up some open floor furnishings and notice how they cluster.

If you're just talking about having an overall theme throughout, then carry over a main color into accents of other rooms. For example, if there's a lot of orange in the kitchen, throw in a couple orange pillows on the couch in your tv area, which might have another main color scheme. Carrying over metals and structures work too. If your dressers are giant rectangles, maybe get some kitchen stools that also have blocky features, or if your lamps are mostly copper and ceramic, try having copper and ceramic pieces elsewhere in other rooms. Stuff like that. Dining room centerpieces on tables can be a big helper in defining a style, also on coffee tables, shelves, ect.
>>
>>9154244
For that window you can get some rich/luxurious looking fabric to make drapes. Just remember to use warm tones to make sure everything feels cozy.
>>
>>9154244
I think all the brown wood is the nice part, the black shelves are the jarring part and I would be looking at faux-wood contact paper for them, particularly for that vintage science lab vibe.
>>
Can I request some pics of rooms with toy collection displays? I have a fair amount of Figmas/Figuarts/Revos/etc. as well as a lot of accessories and 1:12 furniture. Not an ungodly clusterfuck of a collection, but I'd like to display them neatly.

I don't mind the IKEA Detolfs, that /toy/ usually prefers, too much but they really need risers, lighting, and preferably shelf liners or backgrounds to be a little less generic and sterile. I might go that route in the end.
>>
>>9155142
That I can do! I wanted my desk in front of the window for some sunlight but looking at those ugly blinds really brings me down.

>>9155144
All the brown looks much nicer in person IMO so I'm glad it looks nice photographed too. I'll look into some contact paper and see if I can make my space more comfy.

Given that you already have a collection of glass jars you want to use, my suggestion is to dive straight into seeing what fits into them, and whether they will work, like putting your buttons into jars or your pencils into measuring beakers, ribbons into narrow-necked beakers. You don't want to put tools you will actually use into some hard-to-get-out-of glass beaker, so move things around and make sure your arrangement works for actually living with and not just for a nice photo.

For the larger knick-knacks, look for larger glass cloches or jars to place over them.

You can download and print out antique apothecary labels to stick onto your glass jars to give them a "science ingredient" kind of feel. For the glass cloches, write down some info on hard card and fold them to make something that looks like a museum tag. Now your knick-knacks will look more like museum curiosities.

Clear out the wall shelves and arrange your glass cloches and jars on them to make a nice display. Once you get that set up, you'll pretty much have a sort of mini museum of curiosities going on. Then you just need to print out a few sciencey posters and add them around your room (like over that missing spot on the blinds) and you're more or less done. I don't really have any ideas for your keyboard, though, maybe just leave it there and only work with the two lower shelves.

There's a few extra things you can do, like if you can get ahold of old medical equipment, putting your cutting tools in a surgical tray (along with a leftover equipment maybe), a stethoscope on the wall and a poster of some human anatomy looks quite cute. You can repeat the apothecary theme on your vanity, put your makeup brushes into measuring jars and stick apothecary labels on everything. Depends on how far you want to take the theme, overhauling the two shelves alone should be enough to get your started with.

Omg anon this is perfect! I love the idea of putting my figures in glass jars/cloches. If I don't do the nice curtain idea like another anon suggested I'll put little posters over my blinds (might work as study material too). I do have a vintage handheld microscope that would look neat on display so I can pull that out of storage.

>not sure what to do with the keyboard
Yeah the very top two shelves are kind of stuck how they are so I'm just focusing on the bottom two.

I'll start with my office area first and if I like the look that much I'll spread it to my bedroom and bathroom. Thanks again!
>>
>>9155270
I'm also really interested in alternative ways to display figures.
I know /toy/ really likes Detolfs because they have glass doors (to keep the dust out and better protect figures). They're like a cheap alternative to china hutches. But I've heard mixed opinions on whether or not it actually helps much.

I found these and a few other cute ones on Ali Express but I'm sure eBay or Taobao have similar items if you want to go through them instead.

If want something sooner than later, the white or clear standard removable hooks from Walmart (or any other general store) would work. If you line up a few hooks on each side and add some loops to the fabric you can get a similar effect as if the fabric was hung on a tension rod.

>>
>>9159012

>>
>>9159012

The mirror's the problem here. It just really needs to be removed and given its own permanent spot that isn't in front of/blocking access to your other belongings.

Some ideas:
- hang the mirror off one of the straight walls, or off the door into the room
- get a mirror with a stand, you can then place that against one of the sloping walls/ceiling and the mirror would still be upright. You can fill the space behind the mirror with a short shelf for storage, preferably accessible from the sides.
- Mirrors on wheels exist as well, just be realistic about how much you'd end up shuttling the mirror around before you commit to one. A permanent spot where the mirror resides most of the time is much better than having to move a mirror around your room every single time you want to do anything.
- Consider getting rid of the bookshelf and getting a cupboard with door(s) so that you can hang the mirror on the door. You can still keep your books in the cupboard.
- instead of a cupboard with doors, some Ikea wardrobe units have mirrors that pull out. You will need to screw them into the walls behind, though.

Once you sort out the mirror, all that's left is to organise the bookshelf, maybe add some storage in the form of cute boxes with labels (instead of the white plastic bin), and you're done.

Lately I've been having a hard time deciding if I want a fluffy comforter for my bed or if I want a quilted bedspread... So, pics of beds with either would be nice. It might help me decide, bonus points if its cutesy pastel purple and/or pink.

quick question anons! So I recently moved into a new place which meant that I finally had a chance to get a fresh start with furniture! No more hand me down furniture that I couldn't move or paint. I would finally have cute matching furniture, I told myself.
Before I'd moved in I'd already decided on white furniture with dusty pink accents and a few gold pieces here and there, and I've started going in that direction. However, when I moved in it turns out there was one piece of furniture left- a big black set of dresser drawers. At first I was sure that I would either move it into the hallway or paint it white if I kept it, but once I got my desk in, looking at the row of furniture in my room (white desk, black dresser, black+white coord work-in-progress, white vanity) I started thinking, well hey, this black dresser actually doesn't look so bad among the rest of my white furniture. And then I started thinking that with a room so big, maybe I need a dark statement piece so that the room doesn't feel so empty. And the more and more I stare at it, the more I'm starting to really like the black and white furniture combination! Am I totally crazy for liking this? Can it work? What do you guys think?

Pic related is a collage to give you guys a feel for the distribution of color in the room.

Get hand made (blown?) glass bottles with spheric shapes, reminiscent of laboratory flasks, but not actual flasks, these may look like you don't have where to store them instead of being decorations. Also look for medical models, such as plastic skeleton shapes. Maybe an alcohol lamp: but don't fire it! just as decoration.
Get botanic posters. Maybe look for prints of old botanic drawings and hang on the wall.

if you wanna go full science, go for explanatory scientific posters of something you like.

You want to look at minimalistic design ideas. Floating shelves with a few figures, white walls with black or white furniture (maybe have a few things in a specific accent colors).

I'm more bemused by you using your coord-in-progress as part of the decor; will it change the balance of the room if you decided to work on a blue coord instead of black/white/pink or do you intend to keep only black/white/pink coords up?

And to answer your original question. Black x white x pink is a pretty common colour scheme. Go careful with the balance and the shade of pink, though. It's a colour combo that can easily get too heavy or too bright.

I'm not sure how to clean and polish this place up a bit. I was thinking making a table skirt to cover the storage totes under the middle shelving unit, and I want a futon for the wall you can't see currently. I'm thinking of stealing the black/white/pink theme and doing a black futon and black table skirt? or maybe that just looks too crazy. Futons are expensive.
>>
>>9164782
Right now I think it looks really crowded in your corner. I think if you put the shelves that have the most stuff on them in the other corner of the room it would balance out a bit more.
I really like the idea of a skirt on your smaller shelves! You could get an area rug, curtains and a futon to match and have pink accents such as throw pillows and cute tie backs for the curtains.

I wish I could! But there is a large closet (or rather, a small, shallow closet with long and wide doors) in that corner and anything on the other side would block the closet. The whole room is about 10' x 10', so there is just room for a futon and a lamp against the empty wall and even that may feel crowded.
>>
>>9155270
those Gorillaz figures tho
>>
>>9164782
K what I think would really help is if you put some shelves or even a cabinet above your desk to put all those sewing boxes, then have all 3 large shelves in a row instead of being so broken up.
>>
>>9164782

The first thing I notice isn't the storage unit, it's the gap between it and the other shelves on either side of it. If you can't remove the top that's jutting out, so that the shelves can be moved seamlessly together, make a filler piece that you can stuff into the gap between the shelves to cover that up at least.

The plain white bookcases looks like you're cramming as many cheap plastic toys as you can in here (I know you love your dolls though). It needs some artistic touches in here to bring the playroom idea across. Add some decorations so the white bookshelves aren't so white, like wallpaper the inside of the shelves (or go the full hog, make diorama wallpapers inside the shelves and wallpaper the outside of the shelves with brick patterns to turn them into doll apartment complexes). Under the wall shelf, add a bunting with some playful catchphrase (eg "I D O L L S ")

For visual decluttering, other than the table skirt, consider covering all bottom two shelves -- a curtain on a tension rod inside the bookshelves, stick the curtains to the shelves themselves, or use solid boxes to keep your toys in. If you don't need all the figures to be out in the open all the time, maybe put half in boxes and rotate them seasonally.

For the colour scheme, black is pretty heavy colour and this is a rather small room, so keep it minimal. Keep most of your additions pink and white, then add just a touch of black, for eg a black ribbon/piping on the hem of the tableskirt/futon.

A bit of a personal note. If this were my room I'd put the desk where the storage shelf is, facing the TV. Then move the display shelf that's next to the window to where the sewing desk was, and move the storage shelf next to the window. This way the three bookshelves can be lined up uniformly and the storage unit can be its own thing while not getting in the way. I like watching tv while sewing though, I guess if your layout works for you then it's better to stick to it.
>>
>>9165180
I'm trying to reduce to just 1 sewing box (the colorful one). The top desk shelf is acrylic paint which I was thinking about displaying like pic related. The extra two boxes can probably be moved to the closet, now that I think about it. (Though, space is at a premium there) I also want to paint the cosplay award and bulletin board frames white.

As far as the shelves, I could switch the large one on right with the desk, or possibly the small shelf with storage by moving the shelf (pita) but I'm unsure if that makes it feel bigger or not? This is the fourth place I've had the desk.

>>9165192
The gap is a good point-out, I'm hoping that the skirt will cover that. the taller part is because otherwise the blue parlor doesn't fit- it's too wide. Making them flush would mean eliminating one of the pieces

I'm actually having a problem with my short dog knocking off all the toys on the bottom shelves to hide her toys under them which is a huge pain. I need 4 more sets of risers.

I think what I'm going to do is add a mounted white shelf for the monster high above the futon (or maybe 2 small ones, staggered, I have enough MH in storage) moving the top shelf up and possibility eliminating some of the things on that shelf to reduce clutter. Then the second area (with the bjds) will become more of a diorama again. I think any background behind something like the ponies would be far too much clutter.

I think I'm going to talk the bf into helping me move things around again and think about it. I can't figure out how to have the desk face the TV, it has to be anchored against a wall because sticking out from the wall takes up way too much space. So whether it's back to the TV or side to the TV, either one will be less than optimal.

I really wish I had a better way to store the pokemon plush (bottom shelf) which look pretty awful at the moment, but I don't know that there's any good way to display those. Also- I have no room for a hammock, no corners.
>>
>>9165203

Just a few more ideas for you to bounce around:

You can look into mounting the sewing table on wheels, or replacing it with an office table with wheels, then you would be able to wheel it out when you need it, and flush against the wall when you don't. The carpet and the weight of the table alone should be enough friction that the table doesn't move around while you sew, but you might have issues moving the table around, or need to stick corner bumpers so you don't end up gauging a hole in the wall/furniture when you push it around. Any way, just another idea for you to consider when you're trying to rearrange the room.

For the shelf with the ponies, you can spray paint the insides light pink. It won't add a whole lot of visual clutter since it's just one single colour, but will add more playfulness to the stark white bookshelves.

For the pokemon plushies, if you can spare some wall space (or even the ceiling, if you can reach...), you can hang up some cargo netting, then slot the plushies in between the netting. Alternatively, you can hang up one of those hanging wardrobe organisers and stuff them with plushies. Doesn't exactly need a corner for a hammock, does need either a wall, or some way to reach the ceiling.

No idea about the dog, though she sounds cute.

Please excuse the blog post, but I wanted to post this here instead of the feels thread

>650 sq ft apartment
>decent space for myself, bf, and 3 big dogs
>start working from home
>tools and supplies consume living room
>living room becomes crafting black hole
>kitchen is just packing supplies and stacks of outgoing orders
>once organized but weeby bedroom slowly getting overrun by work garbage
>just signed lease to rent 1200+ sq ft garage to work from
>only 80USD a month

I miss when our bedroom used to look similar to >>9155442 and >>9155334. It's going to be awesome to move all our work tools to the garage and contain the mess there. I've spilled paint on the carpet and gotten it on the walls so many times too, so I'll be really happy to stop stressing about ruining the apartment. Not to mention getting proper ventilation when I use the dremel, airbrush, etc.

If you want to take outfit pictures in a full-length mirror, where in a room should the mirror be placed for the pictures to look best?

My room has one large window on one of the walls.
>>

It needs to be either on the wall perpendicular or in the corner of the window wall. If it's directly next to the window you will be washed out unless you have cheer curtains or something, and obviously you can't have your back to the window.

Do you think metal bedframes suck, /cgl/? I want one because they're cute but my mother advises against it because she says they could get flimsy really fast and wood is more durable. She also says I need to get a full bed and not a smaller size like twin because she insists its more comfortable, but I have a full bed and only end up using half of it...

Tell me about your rooms and your experiences with bad furniture choices. And if you sacrifice comfort for cuteness. I gotta know before I end up making a mistake that would be hard to fix.
>>
>>9168693
I don't see a problem with getting a twin sized bed if you'd be comfortable sleeping in it. Some people do better in a smaller bed, then you have people like my S/O who are bed hogs and take over a full queen sized bed on their own.

That's kinda what I was thinking, I haven't slept in a twin-size probably since I was in my mid-teens so I wasn't sure if I had grown out of it, but I think I'd be fine since my brother had a twin size and I had no problems laying (and even once accidentally falling asleep) on it.

>>9168701
I live with my family, including my mom (it's more like she's the one living with us), and it's not my mom buying my stuff for me. I just don't want to hear "I told you so" later on since she gets annoying about me not listening to her advice when it ends up being right. Part of me wants to listen to her because she's my mom but on the other hand her advice isn't usually very good. I just felt like having some second opinions from some gulls would probably be the best idea.
>>
>>9168693
I have a full bed to share with my boyfriend and it's fine. Also, I have an iron couch similar to that bedframe and it don't get flimsy so I wonder I you would get the bedframe from the same series as my couch how would it be any flimsier than wood? Cheap ones maybe but the cheap wooden ones suck too.

I just got my second 90cm metal bed in princess white and I love it! The old one in black lastet for about 10 years which is a pretty long time considering that we didn't pay more than 70Euro for it. I've always had small beds, because there's no space in my shitty room for sth king sized. I have a king size bed when I'm on holidays and though I love that bed, I do 'get lost in it', like waking up the wrong way round, falling out of it and stupid stuff like that, because my body is so used to small beds

I am a expand-to-fill-the-space sleeper so twin vs full doesn't bother me - I have been known to sleep in a california king in such a way that the other person could not comfortably fit on it. I had a twin up until I was 25, and have only recently switched to a full because the room came furnished.

Decoration ideas for a red walls kitchen? I can't paint over the walls.
I'm feeling inspired by certain larme spreads with this one, though. Maybe adding cherry/gingham motifs will make it feel a little cuter. Maybe I can even add some big heart shaped foil balloons on my empty wall?

You eat her bad cooking because she's your mom. You don't have to listen to her bad advice because she's your mom though. For situations like this, take the advice of gulls who own metal bedframes and have experience with their durability.
