Is there a line where one should stop cosplaying?
Do you have a certain age set for yourself when you will quit?

Eeh, I just googled old cosplayer to find an image to support my argument.

30 for me. Sigh.
>>
>>9135934
Do you expect to look horrendously old at 30? I imagine you must be far from 30 to even say that. As long as you don't smoke and don't hang out in the sun all day, have rapid weight loss or gain, you will look mostly the same as you did in your mid twenties. It's a slow process and won't happen overnight. But seriously, everyone worried about premature aging avoid the sun and don't smoke!

No. But most people lose motivation to create and for most cosplayers, especially ones who are just here for e-fame and buy their costumes will stop. But, i would like to see older cosplayers. Some characters are meant to look mature.
Now if this is just insecurity over turning into your 30s or 40s, don't worry. Most people won't care as long as you actually tried to portray your character accurately
>>
Considering pretty much all major actors hit their primes in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, I think there's definitely a lot of room for older cosplay.

Will Smith is almost 47, yet he's pulling Deadshot. Uma Thurman was 33 when she played the Bride. Maybe for animu, you might feel out of place in a culture dominated by youth, but pop culture as a whole has plenty of room for older costumers.
>>
>>9135919
Well, seeing as I'm closer to 40 than I am to 30 (ugh that hurts to type), not any time soon. But I'll probably shift character types when I stop getting mistaken for a late teen/college student. Maybe. It's more about the fun for me.
>>
>>9135977
i like him
>>
I'm transitioning to western cosplay now since they have older characters. Also there's always the option of doing masked cosplays so I don't intend on stopping anytime soon.
>>
There *shouldn't* be a line, but I feel that most people think that there is. For the last con I attended, I had mentioned to my brother that I was going to bring my cosplay, to which he replied, "Aren't you getting too old for this?" I'm 29 and I feel like at this age, most people have already left cosplay, so it was a little disheartening. At the con, though, I saw a lot of families doing group cosplay together. All of them mentioned to me that it's just another element of fun and togetherness they can share with their kids: D&D, board games, and cosplay.

Cosplay is a hobby just like any other hobby. People may tell you that you're getting too old to cosplay, but the same can be said for watching anime or reading comics. That they make you happy is reason enough to have any hobby, be it birdwatching, restoring vintage cars, or gardening.
>>
The amount of balding middle aged men I see cosplaying Saitama is always somewhat reassuring.
>>
>>9135919
You have maybe, at the outside, a year or two after you finish high school before you are embarrassing yourself and everyone around you.
>>
never trust someone over 30
>>
>>9135919
There are plenty of older characters that I would love to see cosplayed by people of the right age. As long as you're not trying to pull off cutesy younger/teenaged characters at 44, I see no reason to stop.
>>
Aunty Shirley is one of my favorite cosplayers and she's like 70.

>>
>>9135919
I'm not really sure... but not gonna lie. It's one of my biggest fears right now. I'm going to be 26 years old soon and all my cosplays are shounen characters, so I fear that I'll be too old to cosplay them one day, that is assuming I'm not already there yet.
>>
Cliche, but I really do feel like you're never too old. I love seeing people in various stages of life cosplay - I've seen a mother and father as pokemon breeders w/ their pokemon children, old people cosplaying old characters, and people in their 30s and 40s who have mad skill and are still doing what they love. I think a good thing to do is cosplay what works for you - everyone ages, and you can really use that to your advantage if you do things that are age-appropriate in terms of what a character looks like.
>>
>>9135919
You shouldn't have to stop but should definitely stop cosplaying teenagers at some point. There's a woman in my com who still cosplays really young characters but has the DEEPEST creases between her nose and corners of her mouth it always looks super awkward to me. I mean I guess if she is having fun that's cool but except for in pics where they are photoshopped out she looks like shit. And she thinks she still passes for late teen/early college student for some reason
>>
>>9136075
I really doubt anyone honestly mistakes you for being that young, but glad you're having fun.
>>
>>9136978

I used to know this chubby 30-year-old-girl who kept cosplaying kawaii loli's and it always looked so awkward, especially when she did cute poses.

Honestly it's the old men that are a problem more than the old women.

Like you guys had your time in the sun and your age of anime cons has past. Now our generation has these cons for us, just move on and realize we don't want you around anymore, it's our turn.

But it's not about age, as long as you're having fun then keep doing what you love, same as the jfashion thread with the same topic. Just try to be kind to the shitty teens in the latest cringe fandom at cons and remember you probably were one of them once upon a time.
>>
>>9137178
lol yes but only when that character is known for their thinness or chubbyness
as long as chubbies don't cosplay something ultra-skimpy I don't care.

But when a 30-year-old woman cosplays a loli, "kawaii" attitude included, it's getting dangerously close to ageplay and it's so much more awkward.

The idea of being "too old" for cosplay is laughable.

You are dressing up like cartoon characters. 14 is too old for that shit. Who cares?

Plus, why does your hobby have to have an expiration date, especially based on what other people think, unless you don't actually care about cosplay and are just an attentionwhore?
>>
I for one am excited to cosplay a bunch of the gym leaders and elite four.
>>
I think aging is just like anything else in cosplay-you just have to make it work for you. There's definitely going to be a time when you won't seriously pass as dat waifu but if you're having a good time then no one who matters will care.

If you want to continue this craft seriously, then work on skin care and exercise and diet that can help you look more "youthful" as well as find characters that can fit your look better. Compared to "young characters", old ones are harder to find and may not be popular, but if you're in it for the craft then it shouldn't matter on popularity.

Personally I think the biggest detriment to stopping cosplaying might more be a life thing than a personal choice thing. People might move far from any big con locations, get time constraining jobs, get a family or other more pressing responsibilities.

I've run 'cosplaying at a certain age panels' I basically tell people do what you want but be aware of the message you are sending, but don't be afraid to embrace the possibilities that aging might bring. Also if you are cosplaying as characters from 'your' era then nobody will really care except your peers anyway so fuck it. Kids are always gonna make fun of old farts at cons so why bother trying to impress them?
>>
>>9138273

that you're still a nerd who likes to dress up?

I am over 30 and my favorite game to play at cons is when people I meet ask how old I am and I tell them to guess. The look on their faces when I name an age 10 years over their estimate is priceless.

Conkids have no concept of what a 30 year old actually looks like.

I feel as long as you can afford it and you're setting aside paying bills or eating and shit, you're not too old. Also, as long as you aren't going to cons to creep on younger people.
What's the point of stopping a hobby that makes you happy as long as you aren't harming yourself or others? People really ought to mind their own business when they are saying someone is too old for it, too.

Ok but let's be real for a second and admit that a huge part of this hobby is getting attention. You make the costume to show it off and get attention for it. And that's cool not saying anything is wrong with that. When you open yourself up looking for compliments there are going to be people who AREN'T fans of your work, and you can't be pissy if someone doesn't love your cosplay because at 40 you look not so great dressing at 17. By all means do it if it makes you happy, but you've gotta know and accept that criticism will come with the praise.
>>
>>9139897
>you can't be pissy if someone doesn't love your cosplay because at 40 you look not so great dressing at 17
Somehow we put up with young teens dressing outside their age. It goes both ways, nothing to do with older cosplayers.
>>
>>9139907
Ok I guess if you live in a bubble outside of western society, but the reality again is that our society is obsessed with youth. And personally teens as mature characters aren't my favorite either.

And it still doesn't negate the point that when you open yourself up to public opinion it is silly to get pissy when someone doesn't like your work.

It happens. Good genes and clean life-style help. I'm 32 and still get pegged as late teen or early college age. Being petite probably doesn't hurt either.

But I feel it coming to an end. Just general 'aged' look. The finest of lines, and I've just recently lost the roundness of my face.

My point, don't be too quick to dismiss the possibility. I cosplayed 15 yr old Squirrel Girl last year, and no one thought anything of it.

Baby Boomers have a definite start mid-40s, and Gen X began mid-60s, so it would be logical for Millennial to begin mid-80s. the problem is, people have been using "Millennial" to mean "teenagers" for a really long time, forgetting that the oldest are mid- (if you count from 1980) to early- (if you count from mid-8ps) thirties.
>>

>Conkids have no concept of what a 30 year old actually looks like.
nerdy 30 year olds also tend to look a lot younger than normie 30 year olds for various factors.

also, constant TV and film exposure has us all accepting actors in their 20s and 30s playing high school characters, which kind of distorts what we expect teenagers to look like.

Male cosplayers only look good when they are teenagers. Once they hit 20, they look like ex-drug addicts in their 40's after 20 years of taking drugs nonstop. It's awful and cringy watching a 26 year old guy trying to be kawaii boi anime desu. He ends up looking like a dangerous pedo who is going to rape all the teenager girls at the con.

Maybe it is just because I live in Spain, but men here just can't cosplay anymore when they hit 20, unless they turn to marvel/dc or anime characters who wear masks.

Women, on the other hand, can look good in any cosplay at any age.

Counts for any western country. Only Asian men and miracles like Yohio can still pass for a kawaii boi anime after 20.
>>
I'm 25 and waiting for my hair transplant to grow in and to get a nose job before starting cosplaying

Am I going to make it? ;_;

>Women, on the other hand, can look good in any cosplay at any age.

Rubbish, men just don't take care of themselves properly.

>Only Asian men and miracles like Yohio can still pass for a kawaii boi anime after 20.

Also untrue. Most Asians are ugly in reality. Just go to comiket and look at them. There are cute white guys who don't deteriorate quickly.

>Rubbish, men just don't take care of themselves properly.
What exactly do you expect men to do? Apply facemasks? Go to a spa weekly?
I prefer actual men over feminized girly "men". Maybe you are just a faghag?
>>
>>9146076
Most White guys aren't exactly handsome either. Obviously I'm talking about above average Asian men VS above average White men. And most White men, even if above average, just have too harsh facial features for that kawaii boi anime look. That's why White female Link cosplayers also often look better than male ones imo. Yohio would be one of the few actual White men that could make a perfect Link..
>>
>>9146096
Actually that would be a GREAT thing. I prefer men who take care of themselves. Not those men that think poor hygiene is manly.

>moving the goalposts
You said men age poorly because they don't take care of themselves. Now you say hygiene is related to aging?
I'm sure a shower a day keeps the age away LOL.
>>
>>9146159
Not that anon, but no, she didn't? Her second post said nothing about aging, just that she likes men who have good hygiene. Work on that reading comprehension, my guy.
>>
>>9146096
I'm married and use moisturizer every day and got laser hair removal for my face.

I guess so, but white women also suffer from the same thing.

I am a cute white guy fortunately :3

I would love it if my husband started at least using moisturizer and sunscreen. His dry skin flakes are disgusting sometimes and it's annoying to see him laugh about getting sunburned all the time because I know what his parents look like and hoo boy they did not age well. I'd rather have my husband be "over-feminized" now and still look good in the future than have him be a ruff manly he-man now and end up a shriveled prune in twenty years.
>>
>>9146236
>in twenty years.
You will be divorced anyways before that happens.
>>
>>9146236

>worried about aging because he doesn't use sunblock
>not worrying about fucking skin cancer

I worry for the both of you.
>>
>>9146245
I worry about that too, but there is no history of skin cancer in his family and it's pretty rare for people in our cloudy country to get it unless they go tanning every day. Plus, this thread is about aging so that is what I focused on.
>>
>>9146159
>Confusing me with other anon.
I've never mentioned that. I just say men with poor hygiene ain't manly, just gross.

I had no idea Supergirl was an asian nazi.
>>
I will be hitting 30 soon so these days i try to cosplay characters that i know i can pull off. No Shōnen cosplay for me anymore, i will reserve myself to the older looking guys and try my best to look good
>>
>>9140212
Im 27 and everyone still freaks out when I tell them my age because I look like Im in high school. Some of the high schoolers who I work with look older than me! I think its about not only my genes, but how I take care of my skin which is a HUGE part of Asian culture which is why so many asians in Japan/Korea/China look so youthful. Then you have western asians and they actually age horrendously because we don't have that comparative push towards spending hours each day on your skin like actual asian countries do.

You should stop when you don't enjoy it anymore and if that happens because you think you're too old than that's your business but don't expect others to stop just because you have.
>>
>>9151529
Could always be masked characters too.

I'm 24 and still look like a Sophomore. I remember in college, we had a tech building that was shared by a local high school, more than once I had to show some teachers my college ID to get them to understand I wasn't from that high school, it was ridiculous.

Just white, though, staying out of the sun and not smoking/heavily drinking or anything.

this is magical! great photo!

lol, those sock garters and house slippers. these guys are awesome.

Male cosplayers (and men in general) have to go out of their way to have an attractive body (lift, monitor their macros).

Women just have to not eat like pigs or have some nice fat distribution/use shapewear.

This is why you see so many cute girls and then try to find cute guys and are always disappointed.

>tfw living in the west and actively taking care of yourself

IDC if it makes me vain as fuck to say this, but I love how ~80% of women of all races just let themselves go in their mid/late 20s and never recover. I'm almost 30 and look so much better by comparison.
>>
>>9137178
YES that's worse, fuck!
>>
I don't think I'll stop cosplaying when I'm older, just shift my plans to suit my appearance. I suppose it's a personal preference however, to cosplay for accuracy or for fun.

>tfw i won't have to use prosthetics for flemeth in 40 years
