That was me, aka Purple Aquabat. I was super drunk and impatiant cause the drinks I made required caffeine pills and I was on cup 3 of it.

Also she said be at the couch at 11 and not only were all the couches taken but she didn't come till like midnight.

To make it worse I ran our of drink and I left my badge in the room so I only hung out with them for like 5 seconds cause they all went in to the con hall. For those 5 seconds it was fun though. Hopefully you guys will be at Youmacon.

Didn't go to any panels. Dealers room was really boring this year and artist ally was meh.

I mainly just spent the whole time getting completely wasted. Nothing really looked good this year. Ended up making friends in line with some guys from the UK and then actually becoming real friends with them.

This year and only two settings, either completely shit or fucking crazy.

Tfw you used to be hype for the whole game room at Colossalcon but now the only decent thing there is Sound Voltex. Tokyo Attack's IIDX is in trash shape.

Does anyone know if people were allowed to use their own controllers? I played Project Diva but that giant board seemed like it'd be better for an arcade cabinet and was kinda weird to play sitting down. Especially given my height to the table. I'd have been fine with a PS3 controller.

That is because their call trunks (basically phone lines) are saturated. I had to try 300+ times (not even exaggerating) before I got to the actually call tree.

Their call center rarely deals with a volume like this, and you really can't order extra lines for just one day of calls.

Keep trying and hopefully you hit the queue, after that it will likely be another 45 minutes or so of waiting. Per fb though everything is drying up. Reps are giving inconsistent info, some say everything is booked, some say only Saturday is, etc.

Worst case if you don't make it now, try checking every couple weeks for cancellations. They will happen. The other option is to keep an eye out for people "giving up" rooms. Allegedly larger groups took extra rooms to try to scalp them this year. Hard to say if it is true, the rumor mill was strong in that hallway.

I saw those accusations too (largely from a few really assrashed people who kept repeating them in multiple threads), and this is pretty soundly bullshit. In all my years on the forums and FB groups I've never once seen anyone trying to scalp, and anyone announcing that they're letting a room go -period- is extremely rare. As someone who did get a suite, I agree that this year was really awful and has to change, but anyone who took two glances at that line should understand that this was sheer demand, and not any kind of scalping conspiracy. People are just looking for scapegoats.

It would be nice if they changed next year to online-only bookings, since in-person and the call center are clearly a shitshow. I'm willing to put up with anything though, except my only hope is that they don't move to a lottery (since that's pretty much guaranteed to make everyone mad except for a lucky few).

Yeah, I'm not really apt to believe there is a giant black market of rooms floating around now. The truth is that the con is just too big for the Kalahari in terms of attendants. They also are not going to build more rooms (can't justify is for most of the year) or likely even more parking (again, same as above and parking lots are not cheap).

I know Colossal staff are hoping Colossal East will do something to alleviate this, but I highly doubt it. Their timing was terrible, it's the fucking week after Dragoncon.

I do feel bad for some of my friends though, they had a room in the hallway of weeb stank and they basically had their Friday ruined by people being dickheads in the hallway all day. No idea what the plan is for next year for reservations, but Kalahari and Colossal staff need to work out something because that was bullshit.

Hey I know you're probably posting for luls, but I'm not down with being posted right now. Usually I'm chill about it, but I just had some issues that caused serious weight gain. I gained 40lbs in the course of a year and now that the situation seems resolved I'm working on it, but I was miserable and self-concious af during the whole con. But I was running lolita events those two days so other people could enjoy them. Otherwise there'd be no lolita programming aside from a panel at this con. Other Kalahari events like FAP & Colossal East are somewhat intended to give people another option if they can't make it to Colossal, but that's nowhere near a perfect solution so a cap is really the only viable answer. Kalahari opened up that new Location in PA so they aren't really investing more money into the Sandusky location for several years so there's not going to be any new expansions to the hotel portion anytime soon unfortunately.

also presidential suites are cool, but you're basically paying extra for a hot tub rather than an extra room, cuz it's a 2br and $200 more than a 3br village suite, which also has a kitchen (and a whirlpool tub, at least). No longer need to be ID'd because it's right there on your wrist/pass. You'd get them at registration/pre registration when you get your passes.

Any feedback for the Lolita events?

- Tea Party: for those that attended, both or just this year, food options, did you like them? Raffle prizes? Personally, I felt this was more filling and substantial by cost than it was last year. It looked like everyone got to enjoy what they wanted. We were going to try to organize a tea party at the Carousel museum, but with parking being the way it is and the cost of a shuttle for us not knowing the total tickets that were going to sell we just went with this in the end.

- Fashion Show: Everyone in it seemed to enjoy it. I feel this set up is more personal than using a full runway like last year, considering that it's not a formal brand fashion show and personal coordinates. That said, is there enough interest to continue it next year?

- Lolita Guests/Brand Presence: I want to try to push again for a lolita guest of some sort or see if we can get a brand to come out. Who would you like to see, who would you be less interested in seeing?

After years of looking at different coords and visiting hundreds of threads and going to several conventions, I've finally come to one single conclusion when it comes to Lolita:

I don't get it.

I really just don't get it. It's like putting 4 layers of icing on a single layer of cake.

I thought I understood, and was working on a dream list, and then I went to Colossal and I saw the lolitas and it dawned on me that I don't understand the appeal at all. As in, not that it's necessarily ugly; it just doesn't make sense.

It's like putting a tutu on a giraffe where you'd see that and be like "What? But...why?"

Can you or someone explain it to me?

I do wish he'd taken the time to spell out the evidence a bit more, he just sorta dropped bomb after bomb (no pun intended) and hardly gave us time for it to set in. It's a frilly outlandish and out there fashion. Unless you are the classic master race and then it's just Mary Poppins cosplay, but it's not cosplay it's a fashion, don't confuse me with those cosplayers and I'm certianly no ageplayer like those sweet lolitas are.

It's a thing to do. It's a hobby that a lot of people are interested in. There's a large social aspect to it. People get into it for collecting purposes. Others like making things by hand. Others like to show up everyone in their brand. Whatever.

The con scene has a lot of different hobbies and interests and for each you could probably ask the same questions. "Why?" BJDs, Gundam Models, Larpers, Cosplayers, Fanfiction writers, Fan Artists, Crafters, The whole damn concept of fandom and anime/vidya fandom in the first place. I've had people ask me "Why?" when it comes to conventions in the first place.

Because it's a thing and people enjoy it.

I don't understand it from a fashion perspective. I'm a person that sees the appeal of most fashion styles, whether I like them or not.

Sometimes the styles delve around contrasts of brighter and darker shades, sometimes it's about bringing vivid imagery, sometimes it's about shock value through explosions of color and mixes. Sometimes it's about patterns and sometimes it's not.

Lolita (disregarding offshoots such as Otome-kei and Ouiji and that ridiculous "bubble goth" [and all other applied names it's called]) seems the be the same idea, copied and pasted relentlessly without even any rehashing. The examples I omitted above literally push away from lolita because of its dullness and repetition to the point that it's difficult to put them in the same category.

Lolita seems so...bizarre in its dullness.

Well it is designed to create a specific image - feminine, youthful and cute in a loosely historically inspired frilly way, with this image being built around poofy dresses and skirts. A lot of the core Japanese brands talk about 'living like a princess' and childhood dreams, which is reflected in brand names like "Innocent World", "Victorian Maiden" etc. So since there's this overall core concept to it of course it's got a huge amount of same-ness. This is basically the antithesis of a lot of fashions where creativity is encouraged within a wider range of looks and silhouettes - lolita retains the basic frilliness and silhouette or it becomes not-lolita.

The appeal of it is multifactorial, as other anon said - it's one of the few fashions that have an active community and almost a whole subculture associated with it, like you can try your hand at being a 'lifestyle'lolita on the extreme end of things or just wear it because you like it, or be involved to any degree. Goth used to be a bit like that but honestly it's pretty dying, most of the people who remember the community aspect of that are in their 30s and 40s now and there used to be a whole lot of 'how goth are you really' shit slung at those who just liked the aesthetic and not the music or the whole 'scene'.
