Can we get a room thread?

I'm especially looking for rooms that are a little more mature looking as I've moved back from college and my room at home is a little too childish for my tastes now, so I'm searching for inspiration.

Any seagulls been decorating?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to reduce heat coming into our room without doing something really drastic or ugly as hell like tinfoil on the windows. I saw somewhere that somebody did blackout curtains with a white liner to help reflect the sun a bit.

It's not my place so I can't really do much more then hang up curtains and I like being able to see out the window and open it up in the evening to let fresh air in.

does anyone have any suggestions for lightweight furniture, dressers and such? The only thing I could think of was wicker but I don't think it would look good

I've been living out of like 6 of those clear plastic sterilite 3 drawer cart things. And while it's super convenient when moving they do make my room look a bit ugly.

Also I have pic related. Bought it when I was in college (even though I don't have anything else pink and I don't even really like pink) and needed a cheap desk. Is there anything I can do to make it more neutral? Is there a way to paint glass without the glass chipping off and still keep the surface flat?

Could you do some kind of 2-layer curtain? A sunblocking base and then a cute sheer over-lay that fits in with your room aesthetic?

I have this in my study as it has a large window that you can see through when you use the main staircase in my apartment. It's easy to change styles and find on ebay, taobao and aliexpress.

I don't know how to help your curtain problem, but I like the setup of your room a lot! It's very cute.

I'm in the middle of redecorating right now. I'm really happy to have found a cute bookcase, desk, nightstand and dresser set, hoping it pulls through. Next I'm looking to get a bed frame and a full-length mirror. I am slowly making my room kind of cute again after so many years!

However, I'm wondering if seagulls have any tips for storing linens and towels, because they are starting to eat up my closet.

Speaking of my closet, when cleaning our clothes, does anyone else have a really hard time of letting go of stuff you haven't worn for months? It's killing me to donate so many things. I'm scared I might need them again!
>>
>>8922297
It's not my room. It's something I had saved in my room folder. I wish my room was that cute!

For storing linens, how many sets do you have? I have a couple sets for my bed. Larger things like comforters can be put in the vacuum storage bags.

Since I don't have a linen closet I keep my linens in a tote under the bed and a set in a night stand drawer.

Aw, well you have really great taste anyway!

I have about three for my bed, plus a few tablecloths. Putting them under my bed is a great idea! I have come clear plastic storage containers I could use for that. Now I just have to get a bedframe, since I've got my bed on the floor /orz.

For my linen, I did a big clear-out and now have:
2 x good sheet sets
1 x guest set
2 x lightweight waffle/cotton blankets
1 x heavy winter quilt

Oblivious you don't have to cut down as much as I did but I recommend doing a stocktake of sorts. I use my bed drawers for sheets/towels and a large ottoman for vacuum packed quilt and blankets.
I use the ottoman/coffee table out in the lounge room for vacuum packed pillows

If you haven't worn it in over a month then let it go. If it helps, you can probably afford to buy it again whereas whoever is receiving it likely cannot.

Spraypainted wicker can look very beautiful though. Put it outside on cut-open garbage bags on a windless day and spray some wicker. I'm sure a tea-stained color, or pastel would look nice. Wicker is awesome, especially if the pieces have braided details along their edges.

I need some help. I just moved like three days ago so pardon the mess but I need suggestions on how to goth this room up elegantly without painting or anything. I'm currently upcycling an old dresser and painting it and a little bookcase that goes on top of it black with white lace patterning sprayed on from a thing I saw on pinterest.

The bookcases are driving me crazy but my parents won't let me stain them or anything even though they're the ones that threw out my black bookcases that were perfectly good and gave me these because "they don't match the living room" y'know because they totally match mine. (sorry for the salt, I'm still miffed)

Anyone know where I can order some inexpensive but pretty picture frames to put spooky pictures in? I'm also thinking about cutting out little bats like >>8918804 and ghosts and sticking them everywhere with double sided tape but I don't know if that'll mess up the paint or not.

That bed is way too big for that room. I don't think you can get away with not painting.
>>
>>8926841
I'm not gonna sleep in a twin. I roll around too much. I know it looks really cramped but I'll have room to move around once the boxes are out of the fucking way. As for painting, I mean it's grey. That's a pretty somber color if you ask me.
>>
>>8926848
The four poster is blocking the windows and it looks like shit. You don't have to downsize to a twin, but that frame just doesn't work for that room. Sorry.
>>
>>8926851
It would if I moved it to where those ugly ass bookcases are and either moved the dresser or the bookcases to the foot of the bed.
>>
>>8926832
Can you rotate your bed to go against the wall your dresser is against so that the frame isn't awkwardly blocking the windows, or is that corner wall space still not wide enough? I think other anon meant you had to paint the bookcases, not the walls...unless you can cover them with patterned paper or something they really don't go with a gothic theme. I think some nice window treatments would help with making the room more gothic. Can't help with frames, sorry - it'll probably depend on the stores in your area. If you want to stick things on your wall use blutack or the 3M stickies, they're usually less damaging to paintwork than tape.

It's not wide enough. That's why I was thinking I could put it against the wall where the bookcases are but then I'd have this weird gap where I can't really fit anything. Unless I got like a really thin nightstand or something.

1-Black dresser
2-Vanity
3 & 4 - Ugly motherfucking bookcases. What if I lined the bottom of the shelves with lace and let it hang over the brown a bit?
5 - Bed
6 - Black and white dresser currently in my garage being sanded down
7 - Door from kitchen
8 - Closet door
9 - Bathroom door
10 11 & 12 - Windows

I currently only make about 500 dollars a month but I'm hoping to get a better job serving soon. I pay 100 dollars a month in rent to the 'rents, and occasionally they'll give me money in exchange for odd jobs (Which there's currently a lot of with all the unpacking). I'm taking a break from buying lolita things and, well, a lot of things until this room is finished because I need to nest more than anything right now. My parents and boyfriend are willing to help me out here and there with small decor items but I'm mostly footing the bill for this.

Bookcase: Fairy lights and rose flower garland OR Chiffon drapey curtains OR both. Personally I have both on my bookcase/cosplay storage.

Frames: Here in Aus, out local craft store has cheap wooden craft frames in decorative ornate styles that you can buy and paint. I did mine in either gold or wine red.

Color scheme: Gothic doesn't always have to be black/white based. Enjoy the rich jewel tones and luxurious fabric this fashion promotes.

Depending how they look, you could refurbish them, or find alternatives?

hey thought I'd post my room, it's alright so far but I really don't like the the curtains (they were here when I moved in). Does anyone have suggestions for curtains that would look cute but not kids vomit cute?
>>
>>8926944
>>8926828
Like diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis. Those are nice but I'd like something a bit more historical looking. Yard sales and thrift stores here I come!
>>
>>8926950
Go with something sheer and light pink, bringing out the color in the bedspread. Make sure that the curtains end where the window ends, because right now the length of the curtain just makes the window look shorter than anything. If you can, get a white rod instead of the black one, maybe with a pearly end instead of a twisty one?

I'd also maybe move your bed where your desk is, and your dresser under the window, that way you can put decorations underneath, thus using the free space, and also freeing up your mirror for more posing. It'll make the room look a lot more proportional and utilize the space a lot more.

Also if you can, maybe find a throw pillow you can put on your bed that matches the eventual color of the curtains?
>>
>>8926938
Ooooo I like the flower garland idea with some black or white roses as well as draping the lace over each shelf. As for the color scheme I know gothic has more colors to offer, but I just personally like black and white.

From top left to right
1. Black canopy for my canopy bed that my cats are probably gonna tear apart but hey it wasn't too expesnive
2. A shitton of these black roses so I can make a garland out of them to hang from the tops of my windows
3. A deer mount that I got for a sooooong probably gonna either put it above my bed or my dresser
4. Creepy animal bones in little jars with dried moss I think?
5. A vamplet! Ghost pony!

I also got some photographs from the late 1800's/early 1900's to frame. I'm so excited about this all coming together! Thanks everyone for your advice and support thus far!

cgl, any ideas for prettying up a portable wardrobe like this? It's only a temporary living situation (for like, a couple of years) so I don't really want to go all out and invest in something proper. It'd be nice if I could make it look a little bit cuter for those two years that I'll be using it, though.

Get a long stretch of fabric that is the length of on side to the bottom, around the top, and to the other side to the bottom. If possible put the back against a wall. Use some cute ribbons to gather the sides like curtains. The top being covered should deal with any dust getting on the clothing. You can leave the front open and add a garland around the front edge.

The other canon's idea is cute. You could also make a cover in a cute fabric and make the front like a curtain. Might look neat if it matched your bedroom curtains.

>>8927674

Actually, I don't think I can take off or replace the original covering -- the metal frame feels really flimsy without it. I think the fabric cover is providing some kind of tension that's helping the frame hold it together.

I like the idea of the flower garland, though, and attaching a lace curtain to the front or the sides would work. Maybe I could even put some cute wall stickers on the outside, something I can remove when I leave.

>>8927675

First thing I bought! It's great for organising socks and jewellery. Never thought of hanging one behind the door/on the wall as a makeup organiser, though. Thanks!

I'm totally open to any suggestions you have to make my room look nicer, especially ways to hide extension cords and places to get cheap frames. (But I'm not removing the emo poster, I'm trash and I know it.)
Oh, and finally, does anyone have good places to get floral sheet/comforter sets from? I'm having some trouble with that, since I'm redoing my bed, too. thanks guys

Any ideas on how to deal with hideous carpets in a rental anons? Rugs big enough to help would cost close to a grand and I've looked at carpet squares but it's a similar issue of price.

I'm legitimately thinking of moving because I hate the carpet in this house so much. It was fine when I was broke and unemployed but now I'm making it good and want my house to look good too. No matter what I do the 70's throwup vomit color and yellowed lino destroys all cuteness.

>>
>>8929511
I know this might not be the answer you're looking for, but if you can find a Persian or similar carpet for a reasonable price I'd say go for it. I have a medium size Persian carpet from a clearance sale which has followed me to 4 different rented flats and that thing is fucking indestructible (withstood my ex leaving it outside for a month in rainy weather) and makes every room look 'grown up'. Goes with nearly every kind of interior too so it's an investment. The quality really is paramount here though, natural fibres are best, I've had a few cheapo rugs from ikea and urban outfitters and while they look okay at first they start to fade quite quickly and they're a bitch to clean (the pile is so short you can see every little speck of dust). Combined with the lino something lower quality would just look tacky
>>
>>8929511
>>8929681
Different anon, but definitely don't get a Persian rug if you have a pet (especially a cat), it will get destroyed and you'll have wasted a bunch of money. Otherwise second anon's advice is good.

I've been trying to continue redecorating, but am stuck on what to do. I've posted this before, but I've been on the lookout for wall decor since my father painted directly over the wallpaper, and it started peeling. So far I have a wall scroll, and a fish tank covering a decent portion of it.

Tiny room, very little money, and the walls are in bad shape. So I don't know what I can really do with it. But I went from a hoarder whose room was pretty much a shrine to psychosis (I had actually planned on painting eyes all over the walls to watch me sleep) to a somewhat adjusted adult with a cutesy, light room.

Trying to list things out, I need: curtains, wall decor, storage. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open. My room is lavender, black, and white, with some natural wood and some pink accents.

I have shitty carpets counters and cabinets. I plan on moving out ASAP. I love the area but paying this much for something I hate sucks. Do your pros out weigh the carpet con? Where should I go to buy a dress form?

My personal pet peeves. It makes your room look like a little childrens' room. If you don't have any space to correctly store plushies, just don't buy them. depending on how your landlord is, it's possible that they'd be on board with you replacing the carpets, if you have that kind of money. If it really is that hideous then changing the carpet will probably make the value of the apartment increase, so your landlord would probably be happy for you to be spending your own money on a renovation project that will ultimately make them more money down the line.
>>
>>8940871
I'm not entirely sure how badly you need to mistreat and school a dog to make them poop all over the place, dogs are actually rather clean animals. : /
>>
>>8953908
Dogs have diarrhoea sometimes, js. Also their paws get dirty a lot and no amount of wiping and washing can stop them from getting a carpet dirty.
>>
>>8929511
Where I live most landlords won't let you make major changes without permission. I lived in one place with a vile coloured carpet that the landlord must have been attached too because he wouldn't let us change it. Luckily the floorboards underneath were in good condition so we just took up the carpet, double wrapped it with plastic sheeting and put it in the loft until we moved out, then we put it back. We only had to replace a few of those grippy strip things around the outside of the room that hold the carpet down because they broke when we pulled them up (How many nails did they need to put in the damn things?!) We could only do that though because our landlord never came to do inspections.
>>
Does anyone here actually own a kotatsu? How is it working out?
>>
I live in a student apartment and while it's actually fairly decent (best bathroom I've ever had), they don't allow us to hang anything on the walls.

What can we do? We can't use adhesives, but our 'landlord' is a company so there's no inspections or anything. They just send people to repair stuff occasionally.

I have one. We bought the heater in Japan and brought it back in a suitcase. We used a Lack Ikea table because it almost matches the standard rectangular kotatsu table. I feel like a shabby chic vibe would be nice in this room with the green. The blinds obviously don't suit that aesthetic as well, so depending on your budget either replacing them or covering them with some sort of window treatment - floral patterned curtains/lace curtains with a rose garland above could be nice. I'd consider a bed canopy with fairy lights as well for a more romantic feel and repaint your desk white

I spent yesterday putting away my stuff and then I made a floor plan. I'm thinking of putting bookshelves under my bed and my dress form will go in the corner by the window (the app I was using had limited objects to choose from...) The only thing my room doesn't have yet that I really want is a dressning table/vanity. Do you guys see a better place for one? It's kind of a tight squeeze past my bed with it there, but I don't see anywhere else to put it... since the room is so square even if I rearrange my existing furniture I don't see how it would open up any more space for one.

Also I'd love dressing table suggestions, if you have one you love.
>>
>>8956276
>>8958123
Light pink?
I was meaning more like a mosquito net type thing around the head of your bed, a full one would definitely make the room smaller. If you don't use the space down the side of your bed you could always put the vanity there and sit on your bed to do your makeup....
>>
>>8959638
ohh that would be cute! I want to see about finding a wire headboard like that on craigslist or something, and I also have these rose string lights. I wonder if it's safe to be up against netting like that if the lights are surrounded by (I assume) flame-retardant petals?

I was thinking pink too but I'm worried that with pink walls and red carpeting the whole room will be too... red-tinted y'know? I'm trying to go the way of soft colors.... I kind of want to make it look like a Liz Lisa or Swankiss shop display.
>>
>>8960115
Maybe ivory or cream walls? With pink and red accesories to tie in carpet?
Perhaps a nice wallpaper with those colours on one wall (all walls might look small), maybe floral or flock to go with the lights, or something cute like ivory and pink vertical stripes.

If the lights are LEDs they should be fine to use near netting because they won't get hot /use very little energy.

So I recently moved into a new apartment and I'm currently in the process of trying to decorate my bedroom. I was thinking of getting a bed skirt for my bed since it'd make it cuter and a white runner for my dresser-thing to try and tie in a bit more with the lighter coloring of the room. I want a full length mirror, but I'm not so sure where'd put it. Another thing I was considering was getting a mannequin so I could dress it up in different coords.

Oh, I was also thinking of getting one of those clear shoe holder things and putting it on the inside of my closet to store lolita accessories. If anyone has any cute storage ideas, please share.
>>
>>8960659
Ooh, it's so nice and well-lit! A thing to consider about getting a mirror is if you're planning on taking mirror pics, what's going to be in the background. If you don't have too much room, maybe hanging off the back a your door? The corner next to your dresser seems like a great place for a mannequin. If you're the type to put accessories on display, maybe get like, jewelry trees or whatever to put your jewelry out on your dresser? And I'd say, do get curtains for your windows, maybe something similar to what you have next to your bed. You definitely don't want sun damage!
>>
>>8960659
I think full length sheer white curtains would do a lot for the look of your windows, although if you have blinds already (I can't quite tell) it is a bit of an extra expense and not strictly necessary. I saw a room where a girl had put a coat rack along the wall and hung her bags on that - that could be an option for you, especially since you only seem to have a few.
>>
>>8960659
Alrighty anon!
1: Shoe rack and mirror combo! I use this to also store loose head bows, berets and small clutch hand bags/some lolita bags fit too. I placed some cardboard along the inside and then fiddled around till it fit. I use round cardboard circles in my berets to hold shape and then 'file' them away.

2: Mannequins are great but keep the possibility of sun damage in mind.

3: Bed skirts and runners help to make a room more cohesive. I think both of these would look nice. You could also do some nice floral garlands around the mirror too.

4: Clear shoe holders work great for leg wear and accessories

5: Desk! Are you getting another one or keeping it simple? Bookcase or pin board?

Sorry in advance for OT rant but I just kinda need to vent
>me and my boyfriend just moved to a small apartment together. We've been looking for an apartment for like two years so we're super happy
>woman who lived here before us was in a wheelchair, so she had problems cleaning
>ok, no problem, we can clean
>two weeks in, we start to notice more and more things that the firm she hired to clean missed
>mold between tiles in bathroom
>all cabinets stink
>pull out stove one day because I dropped something
>literally hell, the stove is a bit too small, so things easily fall down there
>almost puke seeing it all
The list goes on, we found things like her old DIRTY bed sheets that she left in a closet, covering a stain of red wine on the closet floor.
But the worst part is when we found the bugs
I'm not sure what they're called in English, they're called "pälsängrar" in Swedish, they basically eat skin and hair from humans and animals, as well as fabric
We've found about 20 larvas in drawers and on the floor and stuff
I'm so fucking pissed and upset, I've spent hours cleaning out everything and spraying and stuff. I know that I'll probably have to redo all of it a couple of times more before they're gone, and I just cant fucking deal
I also don't want to get any stuff to make it look homey and cute, because I know that's just stuff I'll have to clean of again later
Sorry again for kinda OT, I just needed to get it out of my system
>>

they're called carpet beetles, you can often translate really specific words like that by finding them on wikipedia and changing the language of the article.
that is shitty as fuck though, I'm sorry and hope you can make everything cute soon <3

Carpet beetle eggs and larvae can take up to 3 years to reach adulthood. I'd get some professionals in to fully treat your home in case you miss any of the microscopic eggs.

People REALLY need to take the time to inspect a place before they move in. Check to make sure the oven works, check corners of the room, faucets.. Things like this. If the window can open, check the corners for water damage and the same goes for the areas around the toilet and bathtub/shower. Don't be afraid to check this shit in front of the landlord. If he doesn't allow you to rent because of you inspecting and asking questions, you can sue him.

It's actually my grandmas appartment, we're renting it from her, and the woman who lived here before was an old student from were my gran used to work.
At first we only noticed small things, and we thought "eh, we can fix that ourselves", because we were really excited to move in as soon as possible (afterwards I wish we had been a bit more patient, but what can you do about it).
My grandma talked with the woman who lived here before about the carpet beetles, and she was like: "oh yeah I've had some of those and sprayed now and then"
Like? And not said anything to the person you're renting from?

Look for bedside tables, low tables, childrens' furniture, and stools. If you specifically want a strawberry one that might be more difficult, I think that scan is from Cutie Interior. A cheaper DIY option would be to get a plain bedside table and put a strawberry rug or cloth over it.

I live between two rooms at my mother and grandfather's house, and I have so much shit (never been sure of where I want to go in life, impulsive, buy everything the moment I was into it) that I always get so jealous when I see rooms where there's very little that the people have :'( It's hard to let go of things that I haven't used in a long time, but that holds a lot of meaning or that I'm very sure I'll use again at some point because it had to do with a project that I never finished but I totally wanna finish.

Why is life so cruel.

you need to practice self control. If you can't get rid of this stuff until you finish the project, make a hard rule for yourself that you can't buy supplies for any other projects until you either finish those and get rid of it, or give up and get rid of it. One hobby in, two hobbies out kind of deal.

sims 3 is the prime for building stuff imo, sims 2 doesn't have a lot of basic building features or they work really wonky. you basically need to use a fuckload of cheats to make anything nice in sims 2. the general sims idea is really good in general though

Sims 3 is so janky. Its such a shit show compared to 2 and 4. It had probably the best facial editing, but the actual in game play was awful. I need help on two issues;

One, my room is very big, very empty and very dark. It gets little to no natural sunlight and the only light source is from a crappy floor lamp in a corner. The previous tenants decided that a dark teal colour was the way to go so it's dark walls on top of the no light which is a nightmare. I have so much space (I'm not sure the measurement but I have a queen bed and can fit around 2.5 horizontally next to each other and 3 or even 4 vertically not including closet space) but it's so dark I don't know how or what to put in the room to make it more homey and light. I love whites and soft colours but everywhere says that it isn't good for dark rooms, so I'm not sure what to do.

And secondly, I want to completely redo my room while being able to display my weeb shit. The problem is is that it's a mess of different genres, from gundams to animu figures to comic figures and I can't come up with a cohesive look or theme. I hate detolfs and that cold industrial look so I refuse to do that, but my ideal of soft woods/rustic shelving and furniture just does not look good with a bunch of gundams sitting around.

I don't know the whole room is a mess and I don't know where to start or what to do with any of it.

So I've organized my stuff a bit more and I got a cute little table that I'm going to turn into a dressing table. I've got a rabbit shaped oval mirror from my childhood back at my parent's house that I'm going to repaint white and use as the mirror. I haven't hung my twinkle lights yet or put up any of my art yet since I still don't know whether I want to paint the walls yet or not. (and that big painting over my desk is going to come down eventually, but I need to figure out where to relocate it to).

I still want to build a bookshelf bed frame (hence why all my books are piled up next to my bed at the moment) and put up curtains.

My big three questions right now are:

1. Should I get a new comforter?
2. What color should I paint the walls?
3. Right now I have white, wood, and black furniture. Which color should I choose? Some of this furniture isn't mine, so I may or may not be allowed to paint or replace it.
>>
>>8972407
1. I think your comforter is cute but the blue thing you have over it detracts from it. maybe if you build a bookshelf bed frame you can fold the blue thing up and keep it on the shelf? also the smaller stuffed animals should find a new home and you should get some slightly more mature looking throw pillows that match your comforter.

2.Bring out something in your comforter maybe? A really light blue or purple is what i'm thinking

3. definitely white. black screams "i bought this at target for my dorm room" and the wood tone of your desk reminds me of elementary school or my dad's old home office. but i really like the white vanity table, so i think matching to that would be nice.
>>
>>8972254

Wall stickers. Just doublecheck the size and scale so that it fits the rest of your room.
>>
>>8972254
Print out a bunch of instagram or facebook photos of you and friends and do those photo tree things. Or a banner of photos. I had a blank wall, but then I put up one of those wall decal things of a tree and flowers and it made the room feel really nice.
>>
>>8972407
You should've painted the walls before you moved everything in. You also should get a comforter that matches with accent pillows and throw for the bed after that. Work on the walls first. Paint it a light color of your favorite color because if you don't like it and want to go darker, you can. Its a little harder to cover up dark walls. Go to the paint store, ask for samples of paints, and put swatches on your wall.
>>
>>8972424
hmm very good ideas. Unfortunately the desk is the one piece I might not be able to replace or repaint, since it doesn't belong to me, but I can get some kind of white desk chair and repaint my nightstand white for sure!
The blue thing is there purely because it is the most comfortable blanket I have ever witnessed. Folding it up in my bedframe in the future is an excellent idea.

>>8972442
the room was already full of stuff when I got here (which I've mostly squirreled away in the closet and throughout the rest of the apartment) so unfortunately that wouldn't have made my life much easier, on top of not having time to paint before I moved. I think if I do one wall at a time, though, it shouldn't be too difficult to paint around my stuff. The only hard part is going to be the bed and desk, but those were here already.
As far as painting them "my favorite color" I don't know that blue will really go with the rose carpet, and like I said earlier in the thread I think pink would make the room too red. I guess I'll just have to get a bunch of samples in the end, maybe like a cream or even a pinkish cream? But I honestly feel totally lost as to how to match this carpet so I was hoping someone on here would know what to do with a carpet color like this.
>>
>>8972451
If it is rose then a dusty pale type of brown would look nice. It would match your furniture easily and you can have a earth tone type of room. Grab some match green curtains or white curtains and it will be a nice retreat. Maybe even put down a rug to go with it. If you do get curtains, string some fairy lights on the top with some roses to tie in the already existing carpet color.

Ideally. I would say you do need to renovate to add more windows and rewire for more lighting. I'm somewhat baffled why only have one floor lamp and whether you have more power outlets to add more lamps to or if you have no way to recharge your phones in your bedroom either. And I would say to repaint the walls to whatever colour you like.

But assuming you can't for whatever reason.

I don't know why you would think white and cream are terrible colours for dark rooms. They make good contrast against dark walls and can look very bold and dramatic. So I would definitely go ahead and make all the furniture white and all the soft furnishings cream (or grey). Keep a tight grip on your colours so you don't end up with a clashing rainbow, stick to a strict colour scheme where all your furniture is only one shade and all your furnishings are only one shade as well.

As for lighting. If you really cannot change the number of lamps/windows, or even the lamp itself, go for an LED lightbulb with a brighter rating, look for whiter light instead of the "daylight" or whatever. Try taking off the lampshade as well, if the room is brighter without it, then replace the lampshade with something that diffuses the light but doesn't dim it.

You can also add a large mirror or four to brighten the room, it will reflect the light and bounce it around. However, lots of people have hangups about their reflection watching them sleep, so test that before you commit to any mirrors facing your bed.

As for displaying your hobbies, your best bet is a shelf like >>8918897, make the shelves generic and big enough. Then you can make little gundam dioramas inside one, comic figures inside another, with each shelf space acting like a smalll frame around your individual hobbies, so you'll have no issues with whatever hobbies not going well together. Whatever you prefer not to display, you can put into a box and put that on the shelf as well.
>>
>>8972407
>>8972451

There's this aqua room, which also has brown and white in it, so you could try different light blues for your room and see if any of them can work like this.

I'd say paint your rooms first, then come back and see if your bedclothes need to be changed.
>>
>>8972463
Hmm not an awful idea but where are you getting earth tones in my room? I'm super not into earth tones and my room color scheme is going to be white and some combination of gold, pink, or light blue, so I don't think brown walls would be a great idea.

>>8972508
This is way bolder a color than I'm looking for. There's pretty much no brown in my room either...

Minus the bugs. The mold, hellish kitchen, and general cleanup job sounds exactly like what I had to clean up when I lived with male roommates.
It sounds like the landlord dicked you over by playing down the extent of the mess to be cleaned. That happened to me when I signed on to a lease halfway through the year with two male roommates having lived there for half year already. When their lease was up they vacated the property without cleaning save vacuuming their rooms (with my appliance). When it was my turn to move out, the greasy landlords expected me to clean a year's worth of boy mess that I had no part in and threatened my security deposit. They didn't want to hire professionals obviously so it was easier to blackmail me into it.
Needless to say I didn't bust my ass cleaning for those fucksticks, and I still got my deposit in full.

My last male roommate tried to pull the same shit with me. He barely cleaned before he moved out, in fact he got his daddy to do his cleaning assignments for him. So I took pictures of all the cleaning I did, put it on an external drive, and told the office whatever filth they find leftover it can come out of roomie's deposit because I did more than my share.

Don't fuck around with that shit. You don't deserve to be someone else's maid.

Sage for OT.
>>
>>8973028

Sorry, could have sworn you said something about not being able to paint that desk, and therefore the desk had to remain brown (or, it look brown-yellow on my screen).

Here, have a room with a lighter blue and all white furniture.

I'm going to suggest if you do go this route, try a whiter light bulb, though -- daylight or warm light might make your walls look green at night.

Sage for OT, but I think 4 is the best one for building
But I didn't really enjoy building at all in previous games so I dont really know
>>
>>8973028
People are giving you suggestions and youre really not being much help. Look up ideas yourself.
>>
>>8973545
wouldn't it be less helpful to say that I agree with their advice when I really have no intention of going down that path?
>>
>>8974009
Then help make suggestions? You have quite a few anons throwing out suggestions, but you keep brushing them off because you don't like them. You have tons of different colored furniture and you pretty much said you want to paint the walls pink. Then do it. Don't ask for input when you pretty much already know what you want to do, but still ask for suggestions, but completely disregard them and go back to your original idea yourself. You don't want to paint your furniture, you have no clue about your bed [even though everyone says match it], and the earth tone ideas that several anons have given you makes the best option because of black and brown furniture and the rose color of your carpet can be translated into earth tones to set the room up. You don't want pink walls because of your carpet though, yet you want pink walls even though other suggestions for colors have been given you just don't care.

Don't come in here, ask for advice, and then be a little bitch about it.
>>
>>8974181
I don't think you read the whole thread... I already decided on white furniture (save for maybe the desk if I can't repaint it or replace it, in which case it's just going to be an eyesore no matter what I do with the rest of my room... so I'm not going to plan my whole room around that). The bedspread I agreed would be a good idea to match to the wall color, never argued with that advice in the slightest.
As for wall color, I've been brushing off the advice given here because I think it's bad, but I'm still asking for new advice because I don't have many better ideas. I like the colors pink and blue, but blue is too close to green to go cohesively with this carpet, and I maintain that most pinks, unless it's very very subtle will probably make the whole room look too red.
There's a lot more advice that I don't know anything about in the first place, like for instance, whether I should be going for a warm or cool wall color, which I have no idea where to start on.
No need to get salty and act like I'm turning down advice just to be cruel just because I didn't like the few specific pieces of advice that I didn't like (and I mostly explained why I didn't like them, for the record, so I wasn't just brushing it off without explanation or anything)
>>
>>8974181
also for the record:
only one anon said earth tones (perhaps it was you? kek) and I'm not against painting my furniture, I'll certainly be painting my black nightstand and my red mirror (not pictured since it's still back home), the only thing I may not paint is my desk simply because it's not mine to paint. I'll have to ask if I can (though I'll probably prefer to just replace it if I can get permission to do that since laminate wood will be a pain to repaint, won't I have to sand off the laminate first?)
>>

You have to sand anything you plan to paint unless you like paint chips all over your room after lots of use or small bits of pressure flaking the paint off. So if you plan to paint anything look up tutorials on how to do it. If you don't sand it, it will also probably look like shit. Especially a black or red piece.
>>
>>8974199
What I meant was that I thought you had to sand the laminate entirely off which would be a nightmare. Actually after a quick google search it seems like the right primer will make it an easy job. So yeah, if I can paint the desk white I will, but otherwise there's not much I can do about the desk. I can however, paint the rest of my furniture and the walls. White for the furniture will be great but I'm still stuck on the walls. I like the ivory/cream advice that one anon gave way up in the thread but my old dorm room had off-white walls that looked perpetually dirty and I'm afraid of making the same mistake myself.

I've been hunting down cute curtains for my room... It's way too damn bright even at the darkest point in the night, and even then you can still see glare on the tv. I have two windows that are about 1 yd x 2 yd each. It's just been stupidly expensive whenever I search, knowing that I'll have to get four panels plus rods. Any tips? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm also looking into diy ideas.

Just so I'm getting it right 1yd wide X 2yd high or opposite?

Could you use a tapestry or quilt cover to hang up instead?

1. Yes
2. An off white/antique white, since it looks like you have cool lighting. That should give you some warm tones to help with the carpet but not so much that white furniture looks looks weird. You could consider wallpapering the wall behind your bed as a feature with whatever colour scheme you finally decide on, which will hopefully tie things together

I noticed in this pic that the shoe stand has a bend in the middle. Mine has also done something similar over the years and it drives me crazy. Does anyone have any experiences with good shoe stands that haven't bent?

Also, does anyone have any pictures or ideas for a room with similar furniture / theme as pic related? I'm moving in with my boyfriend soon and although he's agreed that I can make our house as cute as I'd like, he'd like the bedroom to be a bit more toned down. So unfortunately no pinks or OTT florals and lace like I love, but he does like chocolate and doesn't mind the sweets theme so long as it isn't too in-your-face.

I got mine at Ross for $7.99 for a pack of two which was perfect because I bought two packs and had for panels for my 2 windows. They look like the image, but the white leaves are actually printed on the fabric and the green is more mute. I wanted something that was soft, but not too sheer. Ross has surprisingly good items if you know how to shop. I hemmed them also so that they fit and don't hit the floor.

Also for rods, buy a 4-pack of those non-screw wall hooks that have glue on the back or tape. Whatever it is. Spray paint them whatever color you want and then use those to hold your rod in place. Easy peasy and leaves no holes. You could even get two 4-packs and then get 4 rods and have one under the other rods so that you can hang sheer curtains of whatever color so that your curtains are layered.

I found pic related wallpaper at a thrift store years ago. I would have enough for the wall opposite my door where the window is (the wall without the vanity) or I could use it to make a faux headboard type thing behind my bed.

Any tips on picking an antique/off white? Like I said before, my dorm room had really awful off white that made all the walls look dirty so I'm afraid of making the same mistakes they did.
>>
>>8974778
Anon, your tastes confuses me a lot. Thats a really ugly pattern. Also never use wallpaper for a headboard. You really need to pick a theme for your room and quick because your ideas are only making it sound like it will come out really tacky.

If anything, my advise is go to the store and buy a rug to place over the rug in your room. Like.. A whole new colored rug. You don't need to pin it down or anything. You cut it to the size of the entire room and done. Ive done this several times in many houses since my family has moved a lot and it saves the headache of an ugly floor and keeps the floor underneath clean for when you move out.

dude chill I'm just bouncing ideas around, not going out and buying a bunch of clashing shit. The only thing I've bought is the (soon to be) dressing table. I'm just trying to see how much I can work with what I have.
The carpet is really soft and nice feeling so I don't particularly want to cover it up. I'd rather find colors that work with it. So far dusty rose/pink sounds like a good choice for accents, and antique white for the furniture. Those are things I'm pretty sure of. As far as wall color I'm still not 100% sure, but I'm getting closer.
I wasn't sure about the wallpaper which is why I asked. (I got it because it was super cheap and so I figured it could be useful someday for something craft related, so it's not like I went out and dropped $30+ on ugly wallpaper)
>>
>>8974824
Anon, I think you might be the one who needs to chill. People are giving your ideas and you act entitled because you don't like them. I have to agree. The wallpaper is tacky. Might as well just toss it and look for cheap headboards if you really want to spend the money on one. Your room looks awful right now and unless you figure out a theme, don't go buying headboards and other furniture. Change the main things first like walls and fabrics on your bed. Then bring in pieces or change pieces from there.
>>
>>8974894
I never argued about the wallpaper? I'll probably use it for drawer liners somewhere else instead of putting it on the walls.

I don't get why everyone's so salty about me "arguing ideas" because the only thing I've disagreed about is blue walls (pink and off white I keep asking for advice on how to do it properly and am just getting met with hostility).
I'm here precisely BECAUSE I want to figure out a theme before I buy anything, so... literally why are you guys upset? I haven't said a single thing about buying a headboard or anything really other than paint at this point so I really don't think you guys are even reading my posts before getting upset with me?

I'm going to:
1. paint the furniture white (possible exception being the desk if I can't get permission)
2. paint the walls some color, probably either very light pink or some kind of off white
3. Change up the curtains and the bedding to be white/dusty rose

that's really all I've been saying in the thread. Can we please collectively chill and get back to concrit and stop derailing the thread by calling my choices tacky? It's fine to say it's tacky, just please tack on some useful advice so that I can learn from it.

Pick it yourself. Grab paint swatches like 3 pother people suggested and throw them on your wall . People have been giving you the same advice and you keep ignoring it by saying "But I already have x planned" Then do it. Go through with the plan. The computer doesn't show how something will look on your wall against your carpet and other furniture except for you. Especially something as small as either go off-white or pink. Holy shit. Get out of the thread.

I'm asking for more specific advice, on stuff that I conceptually don't know what's better. For instance, will it look alright if my walls are a lighter white/pink-white than my furniture's white? Or will that look strange? I haven't ignored nearly as much advice as you guys think. It was just the blue and the earth tones that I didn't like, and not even because of things I already had planned but just because I don't like those ideas in principle.

for fucks sake anon. stop needing someone to hold your hand. there is nothing detailed about comparing two different things to your room. you live there, we dont. we don't know what will go better with your carpet because you have so many mix matched things happening in your room and the two main things you keep talking about aren't even in your room for us to see if they would look good.

Let me try and rephrase my question. In interior decorating and design, is there some principle that says whether in general if you have furniture and walls in the same color whether the walls should generally be lighter or darker than the furniture? Or does that genuinely boil down to personal preference?

At the end of the day it always comes down to personal choice because you're the person who has to live in the room, but it also depends on what colors you're using.

I have lilac walls and a deep purple ceiling and black furniture because I'm still an emo at heart, but if I had a white ceiling and lilac walls black furniture would look ridiculous and I'd have gone for something lighter.
