Get some mild steel sheet, 2mm will do, an assortment of hammers, steel shears or aviation snips/jigsaw with metal cutting bits or an angle grinder with cutoff wheels.

Rough cut the shape then gently hammer the shit out of it into a dished out stump or a hole. After rough shaping, begin adding in the fluting with a blunt chisel. Wash rinse repeat, drill holes and lace or rivet together where appropriate. Blam, done. 6 months later, but done.

..?? steel sheet doesn't weigh all that much. full plate is definitely a lot heavier. it would be vey hot and clunky yes, but probably of a manageable weight
