I think a lot of this looks bad because they use shitty fabric. The rule of lolita that it has to be high quality still applies. At least meta uses fabric that is actually meant for kimono.

Shitty fabric and poor silhouette are the two big issues you usually see with wa lolita, really. Actual kimono are bulky and hard to use, and the obi isn't meant to give you the hourglass effect that's common in lolita, so it ends up clashing awkwardly.

I feel like the best options for wa lolita are things like this one >>8763526 which makes use of a skirt that already has a high waist, or this one >>8763552 and other Meta pieces like it, that use kimono motifs and fabrics with a standard lolita silhouette.

Trying to squash both together is often just too much of a mess.

I am fond of that second one, but I don't feel like it's especially lolita. The skirt is pretty short and narrow, really. Which is another thing about the whole mishmash: kimono are narrow. Lolita is not. Those giant sleeves can often look really strange flowing into an equally giant skirt.

A-line dresses are great for wa lolita. I've got one from Meta. The A-line silhouette does a good job echoing the straight lines of a kimono while keeping things looking lolita.

This is honestly only wa-lolita here that looks natural. It has the lolita silhouette while still giving that "both loose and bulky" wibe of traditional garb. The matching head accessory and shoes are 10/10.

This is probaby a bad idea, but I tried. I did this with a better quality yukata, too, but the red-pink accents that seemed to match in real life clashed with my geta straps in photos, so I went with red-red here. Might add a white lace false collar or just wear proper undergarments

great coordination. with kimono imo the shape is a compromise between styles; so instead of flaring out at the natural waist you go higher. bell shape petti is fattening, so a-line is best.

I think the skirt is a little bit too much, with the corset lacing and the details. If you did a simpler skirt (A-line with ruffle, or nice pleats) it would work much better. I would also do something more elegant for the footwear - maybe cute heeled boots?
