Girls Channel is a female orientated anonymous forum, where girls can discuss various topics. J-fashion pops up a lot, so I thought it'd be fun to translate a few of these /cgl/ related topics.
>>
A thread discussing a TV show which showed popular Harajuku girl "Peco"'s bedroom. She has spawned a popular fashion called "Peco-girl" which is based on American fashion.

>Another weird XX-girl has appeared. (+494 -29)

>Woah, she's fat lololol (+766 -76)

>huh, what is this?(´・_・`) (+151 -33)

> If a cute girl did it, it'd be fine. /If/ it was a cute girl. (+1042 -14)
>>
>>8707012
I been waiting for this thread! Can't wait to read how other jfashion girls see the fashion and stuff

Somebody should show this to girlyhoot. Maybe it'll manage to break her delusions about the ~glorious Nipponese lolita community~, and show her that it is just as rotten and bitchy as the Western one.
>>
Is there a gyaru thread on there? I was searching but still not getting into it.

For real though, a lot the stuff being said here is petty as shit. Not even /cgl/ is this ridiculously petty unless you're posted in the ita thread and maybe then somebody will point out an unfortunate looking face. I'd really like to know what a lot the people who make these comments look like.

Because there was a topic for the original gals, I'm piggybacking lol. Pattsun bangs, colourful clothing, it's a bit embarrasing now. Those of us who wore the original Harajuku kei, let's talk!

>My favourite magazine was Zipper lol. Because I went to a school of art, everyone was in Harajuki kei. Individual (+201 -3)

>Shinora brings back memories! I wore my bangs on my eyebrows and jingling bracelets. (+106 -3)

OP, it's good to remember that actual lolitas usually stay more into anonymous textboards like 2ch. Or they have their own fc2 blogs (their "equivalent" of tumblr, albeit more web 1.0 ish) Translating threads from there would be much more accurate. This may be a bunch of faceless ruthless comments but the western lolita community is closely knit and systemized when it comes to hate. Ok first of all i love this thread and i love our translator anon-san

also holy shit the pettyness is high, the word "fat" used so much for litterally no reason. i wonder if these girls are ana chans, secret fatties, insecure or just really bitchy?

It's cute to see some of them actually enjoy seeing foreigners wearing it and stuff like that. From all the japanese threads i saw i kept seeing super bitches and got kinda scared there. The person who said this did mention that she didn't actually wear lolita.

I was chatting to an international lolita living in Japan about Western comms and how the Japanese lolitas don't really have communities. They don't tend to hang out in large groups but stick to small friend groups, as opposed to Western comms where we kind of centralize everything, and having small groups comes off as stand-offish. Seeing as the comm system came out of a need to even find other lolitas and try and hang out with them, I can see why they wouldn't need that.

there isn't the same need to have a central community in Japan. So it makes sense that a central online community wouldn't be a thing either, really.

I'd heard from a friend living over there that most lolitas even roll their eyes at KERA and the GLB, which makes me wonder who buys them, since they're clearly still being made.
>>
>>8709831
>most lolitas even roll their eyes at KERA and the GLB
It makes sense. I've heard it too. Like there was a comment on this blog that Kera actually manages to get ahead of the trend sometimes because its stylists take more risks since they know their readers don't understand fashion at all.

Extremely underrated article that I have never seen it posted here before... I think it explains very well a lot about the difference between native and western interpretations of jfashions in itself, especially the last posts. Especially here on cgl we love to insist everything is not a costume out of our cultural context of western style subcultures, but for Japan they just take it as granted that it is, even if it's still their own personal style as a last ditch expression of creativity/character before adulthood.

Thanks for linking!
>>
>>8710751
Thanks! I think I got it in the otome thread. Always thought it was weird that the western community pushed the no costume concept so hard when everything else coming out of Japan was indicating otherwise. Maybe because of the association with cosplay?
>>
>>8710802
Well maybe partially, but like I said I think it's mostly a matter of different cultural context. For the west, where we have societal standards such that that we aren't as heavily expected to discard personality and 'uniqueness' as we enter adulthood, we have subcultures like goths, punks, etc where there are still tons of members who are adults, can spend their adult money on these fashions in their freetime, have their own adult hobbies without being judged as harshly as you would in Japan. So for us it's not taken for granted that we would present our fashion as a costume or uniform of a teen fad, because in the west fashion isn't seen that way. And for that reason it's more insulting to western sensibility to suggest that what you're wearing is a uniform carefully crafted to a specific purpose, rather than a natural and personal expression of your taste (like the writer's example of effortless vs effortful coordination).

Thinking even more about the article, think about how often you hear the word 'effortless' tossed about in western fashion magazines. The idea of not trying, having naturally good taste really is ingrained to western fashion sensibility. Maybe that's why we in the west judge people's coording skills more harshly (vs most of the criticism focused on girls' looks/weight that we've seen in these threads from Japan). Especially with regards to things like complaining about overdone trends (can easily be seen as trying too hard).
>>
>>8710802
Normalfags in the west also associate the outfits with events like conventions or product promotions. Also, theater play advertisement, or a filming for TV.

The same logic of "goths will dress up in goth" won't set off with lolita unless the viewer is familiar with it as a fashion in the first place.
>>
>>8710824
Good point on the word "effortless" getting tossed around in western fashion articles. You want to do fashion right, but you don't want to look like you worked hard to achieve it.

Reminds me of this analysis of what the meaning of "being cool" is in western fashion:

http://www.sloaneconde.com/home/2015/4/12/cool-girls-a-conversation-with-celine-of-double-plus-lovely
>>
>>8710838
There was a comment in the first article that really hit on this for me:
>As I see it, “effortless cool” is more of a Gen X value, while “passionate sincerity” is more of a Gen Y value.
With regards to the growing trend of hipsters and young fashion trends in the west.
I think the common western value of effortlessness is widespread and longheld because it's so old (began with babyboomers who became massively powerful spenders, along with how the designers of that day became the standard for what RTW fashion is today post-war), but it is beginning to fade a bit as the concept of dressing 'interestingly' becomes more popular. Just look at how interest in couture fashion has grown over the past decade, with designer collabs from fast fashion brands and indicators such as Gap's failed 'dress normal' campaign.

>>8710827
I think this is a good point too. For many westerners (I don't want to say a majority, but certainly more than with jfash), the masses have at least a passing familiarity with goth and punk as a concept and recognize it as a lifestyle. For lolita, there is no such common recognition (unless say, you were to be confused with a rockabilly lifestyler) and therefore they will associate it with the next most logical reason that someone is dressed out of the norm, a costume.

I just snapped this pic out of the back of a random j-fashion magazine I have. They have weighloss ads like this in the back all the time. Let's take a look at what Japanese considers fat:

left to right:
>48.8 kg to 38.1 kg (107 lbs to 84 lbs)
>61.9 kg to 46.5 kg (136 lbs to 102 lbs)
>59.3 kg to 39.6 kg (130 lbs to 87 lbs)

So yes, they mean that OP is fat.

As in:

And, now that I've had the time to sit and read through this link, I'm thinking about the aims most would associate with lolita in terms of how you want to present yourself stylistically. Then what does it mean to want to look 'cute'? To look 'elegant'? Where the discussion is going in my mind at least initially is towards the very divisive assertions made often in the lolita community that lolita is a fashion rooted in modesty and feminist rejection of sexualization) might be a little too off-topic and easily derailing for this thread, but I think they're hitting on something here. Maybe the problems with defining cool discussed in the article helps to articulate exactly why that issue is so divisive, in fact- we don't want to admit how we're defining ourselves, necessarily.

The photo they were referring to also fits that pattern.

In all seriousness, one because one can actually die from tapeworm. Two, they will not make you thin in the desirable shape.

A host afflicted with tapeworm will be bone-skinny in the limbs and face, but bloated in the gut.

The reason for this is the tapeworm will be absorbing all the nutrients before they get distributed to the full body of the host.

The host will eat and eat, being in perpetual starvation. Despite their digestive orgasms getting packed and stretched out with food matter, the host will continue feeling hungry because they actually are. The parasite, as well as any eggs it lays, will be absorbing nearly everything of nutritional value.

If you have a tapeworm, do not try to pull it out. This can cause it to snap and release eggs.

Instead, go to a doctor, who will give you just the right amount of poison to kill the tapeworm, but not you. You will be in for a rough ride.

After the parasite and its children are dead, who knows how your digestive system will be afterwards. Given how much it likely stretched out, you might even have a larger appetite than before you had the tapeworm.

But at least you won't be lowered into the grave looking like a cross between a ghoul and Humpty-Dumpty.

I'm a fairly plain white girl, honestly nothing special at all and rather average. I don't even have a nice shape face, it's on the long side if anything. My skin is pale and I have brown hair and blue eyes. When I've visited Japan I've had people fawn and fuss over me especially shop assistants. At first I thought it was just politeness but honestly, it was out of hand sometimes to the point where I started to feel really embarrassed.

One time I was so embarrassed I started to talk really quietly and look down at the floor, and then it was all 'oooh your voice is so small and cuute'! Japanese customers in the store then started giving me stink eye and I actually heard one of them say the equivalent of 'who does this bitch think she is?!'.

I've had the scenario above happen a number of times, where I'm doted on for no reason and then other people around me give me bitch face, talk behind my back saying things like 'she's nothing special'. I somehow manage to have complete strangers hate me and it's made me really paranoid, it's not like I'm swanning around thinking I’m all that - I'm just out and about trying to shop and mind my own business.

I can be quite an anxious person anyway and the whole thing has made me wary of ever going shopping in Japan again or going to get my hair done there or something similar.

I know this sounds all very 'white tears' and I know in the scheme of things it's nothing and I'm very lucky to have the funds to go travelling. From a selfish perspective though, feeling like I can never go to Japan again to shop, look at cute things and have fun kinda sucks. It was always one of the things I looked forward to the most in the world.

can't a certain type of tapeworm that usually affects pigs like make you develop massive cysts in your brain that can explode and kill you and shit?

I would not want to be a woman in Japan

Looolol, thank you autocorrect. Yep, I meant digestive organs.

The pork tapeworm is the one that can spread to the brain, causing swelling.

In any case, don't buy "miracle diet pills" from the internet. There is a chance they will have tapeworm eggs in them, even if the seller vehemently denies it or doesn't know what a tapeworm is. They will not make you cute or pretty, at all.
>>
>>8720603
I think they meant more along the lines of showing skin, not skin color
>>

It could also partially be the shop assistants thinking you're some rich foreigner and trying to flatter you so that you buy more stuff. I've had grocery store assistants chase me down in a residential neighborhood in Kyoto in rain to sell us expensive fruit, struggling with their broken English.

As for the other customers, if it happens again where they talk smack, you can just look at them, raise your eyebrows, turn away, and shake your head. If there is anything that works in Japanese society to the point of neurosis, it's shame. They might get a bit angry, but they will get embarrassed that the foreigner noticed and understood their shameful words.

Please do not be perturbed by the actions of Japanese people that seem to be fueled by your foreign identity, whether it's excessive friendliness by some people or rudeness by others. It happens, and yes, it's unfair and annoying, but we foreigners just have to deal with that stuff when in Japan.

I think it's mostly secret fatties. It's a really sad thing too, but looking at those ads above- and looking at people like Ashley- makes me feel physically sick. It's insane how delusional people can be about weight.
Also, secret fatties tend to be super bitter and have tumblr-fatty egos, so it's a combination of the worst traits of each... and when set loose on an anonymous board where they can discuss skinny idiots, they become so affronted at the idea that someone can actually be thin that they immediately try to tear that person's body to shreds. It's sad, but what can you do.

I'm white and personally, I think my face is average at best (or ugly even, it depends) and imo I have kind of a manface but for some reason my stepdads coworkers in China are apparently really fascinated by how "pretty" I am and they make sure to point it out to him too. It's kinda weird.

This sounds like they're just being nice to you and your dad. They may or may not actually find you pretty.

Has anyone seen a thread on Girls Channel about non-Japanese lolcows e.g. Peenus? I'm curious to know what they'd say about people like her who try so hard to be kawaii nihonjin desu.

It's honestly not that far off through. Over 50kg is considered fat there and flat tummies with stick legs and absolutely no muscle definition are the ideal. I have a friend who teaches there and was saying the school nurse was concerned about a final year high school student weighing 58kg, but not the one weighing 32kg who wears a jumper because she's cold in 40°C heat...
>>
>>8725895
Probably because 58 kg at the average height/frame size, assuming little muscle is involved, is chub? Or at least, it is to them.
>>
>>8725404
That has nothing to do with your personal interests, though? And the focus is still much less, and has more to do with popularity in a social crowd sense than your worth as a contributing member of society. I think the context is very different.
>>
>>8725895
That's absolutely terrifying. Anyone at that age who weighs less than 40kg should be getting help, even if the Japanese are weirdly light in general. Holy shit, they must think Western models are borderline obese.
>>
>>8707176
I have no idea what you're talking about. Being on this board pre-moderation, people were absolute cunts to just about everyone unless for some reason the person posted was well-liked or almost literally perfect, and even then, at least one person was likely to shit on them. /cgl/ is far tamer now. Back then, everyone was fat and hideous and should die.
>>
>>8707168
That's why you keep up with it just like yours legs? My arm hair, at least, is pretty fine and light colored, but I shave it again whenever it starts feeling prickly, just like you do with your damn legs.
>>
>>8725895
Yes, it's considered more on the chubby size. You have to factor in average frame and height though. 50kg at 159 with a small frame is different than 50kg at 164 with a big frame.
>>
>>8720575
That makes me really nervous to go to Japan, honestly. I've visited several other East Asian countries, and in every single one, I got stopped for pictures and had people making a big deal about how "pretty" I am, even though I'm just your average white twenty-something with bad skin. I never noticed anyone giving me dirty looks in those other countries (once or twice in Southeast countries, but nothing much), and I understand enough Japanese that hearing that would probably really embarrass me. I'm sorry you had to endure that, but I suppose others are right in saying to ignore it.
>>
>>8725895
'typical' or average size older teenagers and young women really aren't all that skinny, remember a lot of the time people are seeing images of models, people that aspire to look like them and fashion bloggers etc.

I spent a year in a Japanese high school and whilst the average size may be less than say, the UK or America, pic related are quite typical of Japanese students (of course there are skinnier and bigger people as well).

Also remember that average height for a Japanese woman is around 158cm.
