Let's have a nanchatte thread!

>What is your favorite style? Are you more kogal or do you fall more along the general preppy route?
> Leg wear? Do you prefer tights, thigh highs, knee length?
> What's better: loafers or will any preppy shoe style work for you?
> Your skirts: plaid or solid? Cardigan or blazer?
> Any certain hairstyles you fall on when you're wearing it?
> Where do you wear it? Is it your uni. wear, con only, daily...?
> And where are your favorite places to shop? Obviously there is bodyline, ebay, thrifting...but do you also wait until things pop up on y!jp auctions to get more authentic things?

If anyone is interested, I could make a shop list, including taobao and ali shops.
Post OC as well!

>Tend to wear proper seifuku tops, cute sailor-style stuff from the millitary or kawaii brands. Looks very proper until the shorts, which are boystyle.
>Boystyle shorts forever! Formal pants work too.
>Normal leather loafers for me, my feet are wide so shoe-shopping is hell
>Plaid and solid are both cute, but shorts, no skirts allowed! (Unless they're long, blue, and have a white stripe to match the seifuku top). From a colder climate, so the sweater(with some cute embroidery) goes over a shirt and under a blazer!
>In town and when meeting friends!

Sadly not at home right now, but I can post an image of randoseru-kun when I get back.

They are quite easy to find, you just have to keep an eye out for millitary outlets. Out of curiosity, which country are you in? Finding a size that fits can be hard, and you might have to sow it in a bit, but you'll end up with 'national flavour' depending on where you get it. Mine are Swedish and British ^^

Black! More versatile plus my inner goth loves them.

No, I feel like that's a little too costumey. even for nanchatte.

>>What is your favorite style? Are you more kogal or do you fall more along the general preppy route?
I dont think white girls can pull off kogal that well, I prefer the the regular school girl look.
>> Leg wear? Do you prefer tights, thigh highs, knee length?
Esceially since winter and fall is arriving I like to wear thicker ribbed tights! I think they add realism to the uniform too, since that's generally what's worm with uniforms when it's cold.
>> What's better: loafers or will any preppy shoe style work for you?
Conomi loafers only
>> Your skirts: plaid or solid? Cardigan or blazer?
I only have plaid skirts now but I've been thinking of getting a solid gray skirt for a change... Not too sure how to coord it though
>> Any certain hairstyles you fall on when you're wearing it?
I think the two french braid hairstyle adds more of a put together and preppy look.
>> Where do you wear it? Is it your uni. wear, con only, daily...? Just daily wear when I am out and about. Fortunately I am not old enough to get stares for it but I am sad when I think about that when I get older I would not be able to dress like this... Oh well!
>> And where are your favorite places to shop? Obviously there is bodyline, ebay, thrifting...but do you also wait until things pop up on y!jp auctions to get more authentic things?
I go the full mile and buy conomi, haven't tried bodyline or etc because I really don't want people to think I am cosplaying. If you can bear to save up or you can afford it I really recommend it.

RANDSOSERU4LYFE No serisouly the randoseru is a given, despite how hard it can be to coord.
>Do you think pinkxred could ever work in nanchatte?
It's fine for me with pink accessories on a white background with red accents, but there'd have to be an overall binding colour to make the two work. I admit I struggle with the randoseru sometimes..

>Spain
Find out if there is any Primark in Spain at all, that's where I found cardigans in many colours. Further, H+M has had cord-knit cardigans in the mens dept, never underestimate the mens dept. Uniqlo now has an EU site, and might not have 100% all of the time, but sometimes has good stuff.

I feel for ya, ;__; I'm from Sweden, Sweden is Europes retarded cousin from the countryside. You can pretty much only shop well if you're near one of 3 big cities..

But they're mostly for elementary schoolers. I think it clashes a bit with the highschool student look, making it look a bit ageplay-ish. Have you got any coord pics? I'd love to see how you coord it, I'm sure it looks amazing!

>>8705584
Yeah, there are. I bought 3 or so, but there aren't any with buttons and pockets at all, and all the cardigans are very thin as well ;_;. Good luck!
>>
>>8705599
I kind of want to see a nanchatte coord with an itabag.
>>
>>8705599
Depends on the context, though I do agree with you. I was meaning to get a Cambridge Satchel Co bag as an old-fashioned backpack to wear with lolita and as a general stylish pack(because back issues), then found out a randoseru would be cheaper and more ergonomical, plus it looks like an expensive preppy brand backpack in the west. And it looks great with otome-kei! Quality-wise and ergonomically, it is the best damn bag I'd ever had.

I'd probably reccomand people get a dark leather-coloured one if they want to use it for nanchatte, since that tends to read less as a randoseru by virtue of colour alone. Cambridge satchel's canvas bags are probably the best close-but-not-really.

Mine is bright red, so I try to balance it by adding masculine/grown-up touches like single-colour hairbands, muted stockings, simple hairclips.

Gimme a sec, I'll post a co-ord. Not super quality because I'm not home at the moment, so no cute shorts, I'm afraid..

Extremly shit quality, but his should give an idea of how to carry a grown-up randoseru. Simple, grown-up bling, muted colour scheme. Note the beige blouse keeps the red consistant, and dark pantyhose make it less childish, as opposed to kneesocks.
>>

>>8705671
That looks cute! Very cute!

Does anyone know which materials are used in real seifukus? I'm tempted to do a seifuku collar that looks 100% real, but i don't know what to use.
>>
Can I get a definition for nanchette and kogal?
>>
>>8705705
Nanchatte: School uniform-based, usually customized or slightly 'fancier' versions than the kind you'd find in school. They should not look out of place in a school enviroment.

Kogal=A fashion-concious young woman who is still in high-school, and may incorporate the latest trends in her school uniform, but generally her stylish clothes happen outside school.
>>
>>8705705
Nanchatte: Japanese-like school uniforms that look casual enough to pass as real uniform and not a costume. 'Nanchatte' meaning 'joke', the full name of the fashion is 'nanchatte seifuku'

Kogal: (from wikipedia) Japanese fashion culture which involves schoolgirls wearing an outfit based on their uniform, but with very short skirts. Also obviously with a lot of gyaru-like hairstyle and makeup. Pic related.
>>
>>8705675
Thank you! Most of it is from H&M, the shirt is from Primark.

From my experience, 100% cotton, non-stretch is good, as is medium-weight wool fabric. Note these are taken from millitary stuff and a freind's japanese(non-school uniform, but still) sailor uniform, so anyone with actual experience woud be appriciated.
>>
>>8705711
Ah, thank you very much! Every time I come to these threads I'm interested but I never understood what made up the fashions. Are the scrunched down socks typically a kogal look?

OP of forfun here!

I've had a super busy couple of weeks, I'm real sorry about the lack of updates. I thought about updating at work (my laptop is a piece of shit) then I realised it looked a bit odd just looking at school girls on my lunch break...

Anyway I'll queue some stuff when I get in. More critique is welcomed!
>>
Is all the nanchatte around only Japan-based?

Anon lived in the UK for a while, where school-uniform stuff are cheaply available, match it up enough to distinguish yourself from schools in the area and you are gold to go(sweater-vests, no blazer emblem, ribbon instead of tie, differing colours, etc).

Drawback is ofc that you end up looking more british than japanese, because plaid and knife-pleated skirts are a bitch to find.. This can be remedied with kneesocks, but does /egl have any views on nanchatte with other countries?
>>
>>8705759
More seifuku would be nice, but it's understandable if that's hard to find.. Your blog is really nice, please keep it up if/
when you can!

Also, protip for the 'where to buy' page- I think most of us are looking for specifically the plaid pleated skirt, since most of that stuff is pretty basic.

While I admire the jacket and the small cap(v. cute), I feel that the lunch tin might be a bit much, making the look feel cluttered. Further, the trousers just don't seem to add anything to the look- I would reccomand the gentleman invest in a pencil-style shirt to go with the very fine looking uniform jacket.

Overall 2/10. Hang in there, sir, the randoseru is hard to co-ord, so don't let that discourage you.

>What is your favorite style? Are you more kogal or do you fall more along the general preppy route?
I like kogal aesthetically, but I wear generally preppy styles.

> Leg wear? Do you prefer tights, thigh highs, knee length?
OTKs, knee highs, and bobby socks
> What's better: loafers or will any preppy shoe style work for you?
I usually wear sneakers, or closed up flat shoes. However, I want to buy a pair of black loafers really badly!
> Your skirts: plaid or solid? Cardigan or blazer?
Large cardigans work for me, but Im seemingly moving to a colder climate soon, and I may buy a blazer to accommodate that.

> Any certain hairstyles you fall on when you're wearing it?
I have natural (type 4) hair, do while they are in braids and twists, I keep it in buns, tuck ins, ponytails, side ponytails, and mini pigtails.
If still in fro/twist out form: 'Mini mouse' poofs, cornrows, and guinea braids

> Where do you wear it? Is it your uni. wear, con only, daily...?
Occasionally an everyday thing, but Im attending uni soon, so Ill try to wear it there.
> And where are your favorite places to shop? Obviously there is bodyline, ebay, thrifting...but do you also wait until things pop up on y!jp auctions to get more authentic things?
I shop at my local school store for now. Every school where I live require their students to wear a uniform, except private schools, so I just drop into the local school uniform shop and buy the skirts and shirts I need. Plus it isn't that weird as I don't look too different from when I was 17...
When I first started out, all I had to do was style and cut my old uniform. Sadly Ill be moving to the mainland, where I don't think uniforms are as common and I may have trouble find stuff.

Are there any photos showing preppy nanchatte with skirts that cover the knees? I can't seem to find anything that wouldn't look like a gang member.
>>
>>8706617
Don't think so, it's kind of a gang member style.. Maybe a western nanchatte would like to take up the challenge?
>>
Tie tutorial
>>
>>8706686
actually, Japanese private schools and some of the stricter in general schools have a 'skirts below the knee' policy but they usually sit just below, rather than super long like the gang member look.

>>8706617
you could go for a more conservative type of nanchatte, it's not as popular because nanchatte tends to go for more carefree relaxed type looks but you do see it.

I think smarter blazer and fitted vest/cardigan styles like pic related look better with longer skirts - the skirt in this pic would still look good just below the knee I think.
>>
>>8706856
far right could work below the knee

Would this look bad on thicker/chubby girls? it's so cute and i've always wanted to dress like this but i'm just worried i'll look ridiculous
>>
>>8707776
I think you'll be adorable. I've always thought the school girl look looked great on chubby girls. Maybe wear a reduction bra or something like that incase you've got a lot of boob.
>>
>>8705468
>>8705782
>>8706209
Big tits don't look right in nanchatte. Always makes me think of those Pervy sexy school girl fetishes you get in the westerner media.
>>
>>8707850
Ergh, disagree. Teenage tits come in all shapes and sizes, I'mma argue it's the degree of visible cleavage that determines sexiness degree.
>>
>>8707776
No! Not at all!
You would look great, if possible better as long as you find clothes that fit and flatter your shape, ie just normal clothes in your size and shape. And it could be easier finding these clothes than other J-fashion, because uniform-style is very basic.

Because it is v. basic and not sexy, it will actually work to make you look good.
>>
>>8707776
Not saying sexy is bad, just personal experience from having been fat is that it's hard to be confidant with sexy stuff, but that might just be me.
>>
>>8707787
>>8707875
Thank you guys!
>>8707877
I know how it is! I have a hard time wearing dresses or skirts because i have super chubby thighs and it makes me really insecure, so i normally just wear jeans and loose shirts.
A lot of the schools around here are christian schools and they have super cute uniforms, I'm gonna try some out! Thankfully my boobs aren't too huge, i have bigger hips but it's all pretty balanced out.
>>
>>8708587
Your boobs will work out. Don't worry about the size of 'em unless they won't fit into larger clothing. Big chests are only 'slutty' if you carry them like so. And if you're bigger, you probably just have excess fat, which is a different kind of big boob than 'natural Ds'

Also, if you have cellulite visible(oatmeal texture) on thighs, consider wearing tights to cover up the texture while emphasizing your shape. If you don't have cellulite, you just have adorable thighs, and should flaunt them with knee or otk-socks.
>>
>>8708596
They're naturally quite big, but it's only noticeable if i lose a lot of weight and stay on the thinner side, honestly. I don't really like how they look so I put more effort into hiding them, really.
Lots of cellulite. I've stocked up on fleece tights recently, and hopefully they will work! I'm trying to lose some weight around my thighs so hopefully it'll all go away soon.

I'm a bit of a fatty-chan and I tried out nanchatte a while ago - pic related - my sock situation needs sorting out but it's actually really flattering, I found if I wore my skirt around my waist it tucked me in a bit. Well ok I have a babyface but still
(I got mistaken for a schoolkid in uni!)

My country does not have school uniforms, so throughout school I have dreamt of owning one, not going to let not-school bring that dream down.

Plus, it seems like perfect office-wear.
>>
>>8708983
This is going to sound ridiculous but if you're in the USA, try Walmart. I walked in to mine the other day and they've got loafers in both black and brown just like that.

>>8708992
On Taobao they're called "elephant socks" or 大象袜
>>
>>8708876
It definitely depends on the work. Wearing actual nanchatte to work sounds like pixiteri levels of cringe. I would compromise by wearing preppy style, say to an office job. Goes without saying though, if your work has a dress code you should be wearing that anyway. Wearing nanchatte in your own time, well it's your life you can wear what you want, but if you're specifically referring to how others will react to your wearing it, or what they will think of you, especially if they know you are no longer attending school, I guess that depends on where you live and how much you are effected by others opinions and So on. Also, I know alot of people are not going to want to hear this, but if you actually look like a school kid/are young looking/cute you are more likely to get away with it and have less or no negative responses from people.
>>
>>8708983
School uniform supply stores? Like, American or British uniform stores. They might have them.
>>
>>8709023
Good point. I'm in Sweden, so my clothes are just going to be read as cute or proper, since nobody wears school uniforms. Should probably have specified- More 'mature-ish/European' style will fit an office job.

Still, as long as you 'update' the skirt to be longer, wear dimmer otk socks or tights, darker colours, I think you could wear it for a pretty long time.

absolutely. I wore a cute/mature-ish style to my job interviews and to my subsequent job like pic related. I live in London and pretty much every school has uniforms but like I said, I adjust the nanchatte style for my current job so it doesn't look so school uniform-ish. I NEVER wear knee high socks or ankle socks for example, usually tights. If I wear otk's I usually wear a skirt that covers the tops. I tend to wear more sombre colours as well (I know some jobs that would be fine with the cute pastel pink outfit in pic related though). Similar to what you said most people just read the outfits as "cute or proper"; cute, smart wear.

I have one or two. Stumbled onto this while looking for pictures though and I just aww'd.

>Categorizing himself as the second type, the man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he likes to walk around his neighborhood clad in a pair of his old school pants plus a cardigan and a tie that he bought at CONOMi.

>“Looking back, I did enjoy my school life, but I wish I’d had more fun dating girls,” he said. “As a teenager, I didn’t really feel any special attachment to my school uniforms as I do now. But watching today’s high schoolers enjoy themselves wearing a variety of uniforms, I really wish I could be one of them.”

>This longing for an imaginary adolescent romance appears to be a common reason that binds fake high schoolers together.

>“One time, I was even asked by my fellow fake uniform fan, who was only a couple years younger than me, to go out with her because she said she couldn’t really enjoy her school life as a teenager,” he said. “So we went to karaoke and a zoo on a date, just like a real couple, wearing fake uniforms.”

This is probably a really stupid question but this is my first time seeing a name for this style. I went to Japan earlier this year and saw a lot of girls wearing this style! Are they mostly all in high school? A lot of them seemed older but I wasn't sure. And are they wearing their actual school uniforms and accessorizing them or do they usually buy these outfits? I thought they all looked so cute, especially the girls at the Disney parks cause they went all out with the accessories

We have the same shoe size! Inexpensive school uniform supply stores in the US and UK (e.g. French Toast) will carry fake leather ones for a low price. High-end department stores and traditionally preppy brands (Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, etc.) will carry leather ones in much higher quality. Check the boys' section for both.
Also, searching for children's penny loafers will bring up many results.

you must be from america or canada
almost all schools in japan have school uniforms, or at least rules on the types of uniforms people can wear. so yes, most of the people you saw would've been in high school, but many of them are allowed to accessorise and spice things up
>>
>>8711358
Yeah I am from America. I know they have uniforms but they didn't seem like it was their *actual* uniform if that makes any sense? I'm probably wrong, though. I was just surprised since they had a bunch of accessories on, heavy makeup, loose socks, and their skirts were really, really short. I always assumed that their schools would be strict and not allow that haha. Thanks!
>>
>>8711358
>>8711608
Nanchatte uniforms are not real school uniforms and are not restricted to high school-age people. It's just a fashion.
>>
>>8711619 yes i know that, but the majority of people >>8711608 would've seen in japan would have been actual students, not people wearing nanchatte. a large number of the street snaps posted in this thread are pictures of real students or are advertisements which cater to students.
>>
>>8711640
So is there any way to tell nanchatte apart from real students wearing school uniforms or do you have to know the wearer?

Also, where do you draw the line between nanchatte and not?As in, what elements do you consider necessary for a nanchatte outfit, and what do you think people can get away with not including or substituting?
>>
>>8711652
it's considered a form of cosplay (refer to the end of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYvcq-f7ucA) and is a bit weird to wear your school uniform once you've graduated. there's no real way to differentiate other than by asking.

So it is cosplay-ish fashion that is only worn by students?
>>
>>8712437
nah man, did you read my whole comment?
it's considered to be cosplay in japan if you wear your school uniform after you've graduated, but normal if you wear it when you're supposed to (ie when a student is still in high school)

don't really know how to give you an analogy when americans don't need to wear school uniforms
>>
>>8712493
That explanation was clearer. Ty anon.
>>
>>8711608
There's no reason a girl can't wear her uniform the right way at school, and then roll up the skirt, put on makeup, and toss on some jewelry to hang out with friends after school. Maybe that's part of it.
>>
>>8712577
Oh, yeah. I went to a girls' school in the UK that had uniforms. This was standard. How much you could slowly and subtly edge it in during the day was a talent that earned you a lot of respect. Girls often brought in uniform-looking skirts but shorter to change into after schools.

Would any anons mind if I self posted a nanchatte pic? Finally thrifted a blazer that isn't huge on me and I'm ridiculously excited about it.

Here it is! The blazer's still just a little big, haven't gotten any wigs yet, and this is my only skirt so far (waiting for the next Bodyline sale to make a big order), but I'm honestly just really excited I've finally collected enough to put something together!

I really like the design of the shirt (collar, slightly puffed sleeves, etc) but it looks like the fabric is low quality and I really hate the badge thing on the front of the shirt. Anyone have any idea if it's glued on or sewed on? Also any recs for other places that have shirts like these?
>>
>>8714414
It looks like one of the Bodyline badges I have and it's just a regular safety pin badge.
>>
>>8714468
Seriously? Fantastic! Thank you so much. Does anyone know how the shirt feels? I'm completely abandoning the skirt.
>>
>>8714472
No idea, sorry. I haven't purchased this one, I just have one of their badge designs like the one on the shirt.
>>
>>8714414
It's so short and the fabric is thin and weird looking, it would look a little bit too costumey for nanchatte.

Need tie/sock/shoe advice for these. Getting two white short sleeve blouses to wear under the jackets and for bows I thought maybe red or black for Rin (shark one) and yellow for Nagisa (penguin one). I worried about it not matching but I noticed some of these girls like >>8711216 don't have matching tie/skirt colors?

For the socks I was thinking OTK black for Rin and white kogal loose socks for Nagisa. I'd love to just buy one pair of black loafers to wear for both but do you think I need to do brown for Nagisa?
>>
>>8712899
I can't put my finger on it, but the blazer looks a little off. The closest I can think of is that it's giving you man shoulders, which makes it worse by the fact that it's very boxy around the waist. I guess since it's a stiffer fabric, as compared to a cardigan, it makes you look fat instead of a thin girl wearing something oversized.

it's a nice blazer but I do think it looks like a generic office/suit blazer rather than something suitable for school uniform, even of the nanchatte variety.

If you look at other blazer looks in this thread and elsewhere, you'll see that they tend to be shorter and often have upper pocket, piping and emblem/logo details and quite often feature gold buttons. The neck lines aren't as low either.

At the very least I would recommend swapping out the buttons for gold and wearing the blazer open with a smart sweater/vest or cardigan underneath in grey or pale beige.

The rest is really cute though.

they don't seem to have a definite waist, either. it's the same loose fit like most cardigans have. So I dont think it's wrong.
>>
>>8717411
it's not the boxiness that's the issue, it's everything outlined here >>8717016

It really does look like a generic blazer for office wear.
>>
>>8708944
Seconding this, I would really like to know if anyone has links to Ebay stores that have nice cardigans especially. I'm going to look for myself but Chinese Ebayers can be a hit and miss and I'd like to not have to return anything.

Skirts too pls

I agree with you guys, that's what I meant by the blazer still feeling a bit big on me -- wider in the middle than I'd want a blazer to be. Unfortunately thrifting for blazers that fit me properly has been nearly impossible. I'm definitely still going to be looking for a better-fitting one to wear!

Thank you all for the concrit, though! I'm definitely going to be keeping all of it in mind.

Why are her legs so ugly?
>>
>>8720871
These eyes are staring straight into my soul. I feel very uncomfortable.
>>
Anyone else have trouble finding shirts that fit properly? It seems that even when a shirt is my correct size it is too baggy around the torso, bust and arms and it looks a bit frumpy when I tuck it under my skirt. Most of the times you don't really see it under the cardigan but it still bothers me.

I've just ordered a custom made shirt to fit my measurements to see how it goes.
>>
Also, I am currently looking for a new cardigan and vest, so if anyone has links to ones they bought/liked I would appreciate if you could post. I like both kogal and preppy styles.
>>
>>8722463
Agreed @[email protected] I chalk it up to my only ever wearing training bras. I highly approve of custom shirts.. If you can get them with detatchable cuffs+collar, they last longer.
>>
>>8720937
I don't think they're ugly at all, maybe just lacking a bit of muscle perhaps. I only wonder because my legs looked a bit like that after I was in a wheelchair for a few months and was unable to build up my muscles.
>>
>>8722526
Of all the things wrong with Taylor her legs are probably the least of it, anon was probably just saying that to hate on her.

Nanchatteforfun-anon here, hi! It's lovely working with someone else for the blog as I've been real busy lately, I do have a question!

I originally had tagged up images as what items were worn, such as blue skirt, white blouse etc. However our new and lovely admin feels that tags describing general colour schemes are the way to go, like reds, blues, etc.

I'd love to know your guys opinion! I think either system works but we're putting this together for the comm so we'd love to have your input. Thanks!~

Personally i'd avoid doing matching socks like the model has and maybe doing plain white or something, and of course more traditional school shoes. Big round glasses might look cute too.
