How dead is fairy kei?
[spoiler]it ded [/hiropleasegivecglspoilers]
It still seems to be going strong, from what i have seen. More things from it are trickling out into the mainstream, which is both fortunate and unfortunate.
Has it? Any blogs/tumblrs/weibos to follow?
I find some of the most awesome stuff on Instagram, oddly.
I love some of the stuff by Nile Perch, but DAMN they're expensive. Has anyone ordered from them on here?
Pretty much this besides that kawaii pastel kitsch will always be a thing in Japan, unless their kawaii culture suddenly dies.
Still the same as usual, the girl in OP pic is Kuua Oyasumi tho who's style is gurokawa (creepy cute) usually with menhera theme (mental unstable girls heavy into self-harm and sex), pic related.
Tbh, there are own fairy kei hair salons these days (like Candye Syrup) and I doubt they would exist if it wasn't popular.
I've read a little bit about this but I don't really know where to go for further information. Are there popular manga with this theme? Brands or artists who produce work in this vein? Is it becoming a substyle of creepy-cute, or is it just being worn by a few girls? I think it's really interesting in a very specific way, although I can't say I'd be into wearing it myself. Any links or info would be appreciated though, anon.
I think fairy kei is becoming less worn in the west unless you count those tumblr demiboy transboy or whatever fairies like mahouprince, pheonix etc. Nothing wrong with being into fairy kei and being as boy but there really was a sudden boom on transguys wearing it.
That's because menhera is a theme and not an own fashion, the term (メンヘラ) came from 2ch's mental health board and refers to the "yandere" girls there that fall into a self-harming mental illness (cutting, drugs, eating disorders, hypersexuality) when not noticed by senpai which is why you get quite a lot of...ermn...self-harm photos at Google's image search besides art.
Popular brands would be:
http://www.studio-8-style.com/shop/ (Kuua's own brand)
Thanks for these links. Have you purchased from any of these brands before? I'm pretty interested in some predator rat stuff as well as some of Kuua's stuff, but I'm not totally sure how to go about getting ahold of it as a westerner. Shopping service, maybe?
Kind of, in this case it is because this kind mental illness is still quite the taboo topic in Japan and you know how much young adults love to break taboos.
Jesus Christ that shop has some cute stuff. I'm interested in these buttons, can anyone who can into moonrunes translate? I don't want to wear buttons that have offensive text on them
The translations Google translate are giving me are weird
Also this is a long shot but does anyone know if they ship overseas? Their "about" page isn't giving me much hope
Well, that specific shop is of the Menhera-chan manga series (also sold in that store) which is a magical girl parody in which the girls need to kill themself in order to be abel to use their magic. It is very critical of Japan's society as all girls had to die first before becoming a magical girl and their deads were sparked by bullying (pink haired one aka Menhera got stomped to dead by bullies in the first chapter due to "evil magic aka the preasure of society) and the reason why menhera got popular starting from 2014.
Why do I see this sweater everywhere?
Because people have way too much money and it is the firts thing you get at Google when searching pastel sweaters.
And that's the heavy reduced "on sale" price.
I think Selectshop Tenten is the most popular fairy kei store in japan right now.
If a group on here wanted to get together to do it, I wouldn't mind pitching in on translations. I wouldn't be able to do nice typesetting and everything by myself, though, and without scans of the physical volume that was released, we'd probably have to stop after chapter 5 since 6 was only printed there.
I hardly see any ero in those and leather harness and chokers are so mainstream due to Creepyyeha these days, they hardly count. Also I think the examples with actual hardcore guro as prints wouldn't be allowed to get posted here.
...that's from the new Listen Flavor collection.
I didn't mean actual hardcore guro, just guro that was less about fetishizing self harm and suicide, which is basically what menhera is. Not that I mind it (when it's not too ero) but I'd like a bit more variety.
The more ero stuff hasn't been posted so much in this thread so I understand if you didn't get what I meant. Maybe I should have said fetishy instead, because menhera stuff is very fetishy. A lot of the menhera clothing prints are full of ahegaos, very nymphet-y clothing poses, and BDSM clothing. Pic related literally has cum all over her mouth. Ropes, harnesses and ball gags are pretty BDSM and fetishy looking whether you think they "count" or not.
The less ero art is pretty cute but I wouldn't want to be seen in public wearing a shirt that has a tied up ball-gagged blushing loli with her shirt pulled up like in >>8651339
You forgot the part where the loli is holding a cutter and scissor for self-harm purposes. Kuua Oyasumi did some guro shirt prints like pic related but they wouldn't fit in this thread anymore as they go into the direction of menhera themed pastel goth which she also wears a lot.
Also there is hardly any ahegao, so far it was only at the tigh highs of the girls that are hung.
Just call it whatever the fuck you want. I mean, both menhera and creepy cute are rather themes than own styles. There is creepy cute and menhera outfits that are fairy kei, lolita, pastel goth, decora, etc as both only depends on the choice of accessories and prints.
The idea of menhera is heavily based in BDSM and self harm as a fetish. Kuua Oyasumi promotes her stuff at Fetifes and the entire concept of "menhera" is a yandere girl who likes kinky sex and hurting herself. It's fine to like it of course, I just don't personally enjoy fetish-type themes. I'm not saying it's porn on a T-shirt, but there's no point into denying the sexual element it has to it.
I know what menhera is as I am the one who first posted about in on /cgl/ so you don't need to explain it to me, just saying. I found out about it last year by accident due to the japanese artists I follow on Tumblr.
Because in general it isn't as much fetish themed as it is with self-harm.
Back to the topic:
Anyone here that knows about http://www.yumecawaii.com/ ? Seems to be have a fairy kei focus.
Can you clarify what you mean by "easy on the eye"
more saturated colors?
What magazines are there for fairy kei? I'm thinking of buying some from TOM
nah its not the outfit, its the person its on. yukapon went through a shit ton of drama and shit a while ago. shes hated alot now.
its pretty funny and interesting, you should look it up sometime.
>contribootin so not total ot
SJW go apeshit about every post regarding menhera and you won't much about it on Tumblr as there is hardly anything related to it avaiable outside of Japan, not to mention that the brands and outfit posts are hard to find as they hardly ever use terms. I am working on fuckyeahmenhera with few others but it still will take a while until we are done explaining shit.
Oh, and have this:
all of them are so cute! when will i have a squad as adorable as this to run around the city with?
Is there any person who posts normal pastle stuff, like fairy kei inspired but not all out?
>SJW go apeshit about every post regarding menhera
why? I thought I was up on all the hip and trendy ways to hate people via being a SJW but I don't know what about this style upsets them?
I bet a lot of people who are into menhera have suffered from mental illness or self harm (me included) one of the big reasons I like it is because of how it rebels against tumblrs "if ur mentally ill you're so strong I'm proud of you take better care of yourself take a nap asspat xoxo" like fuck offfffffffff
Why is Cute Can Kill selling wall decorations now? Is this a new trend?
Only two things still in stock:
Bow wall deco: http://cutecankill.storenvy.com/collections/122097-all-products/products/14973327-fancy-bow-wall-deco-sign-02
Heart brooch http://cutecankill.storenvy.com/collections/122097-all-products/products/14972910-sweetheart-hologram
Does anyone else think this would look so much better without the stupid fake glasses and with a natural colored wig instead? (i get the feeling that's there's short natural hair under that wig)
I liked the heart-motif wall sign she put on her tumblr, but looking at the pic related close up of this bow one it's pretty mediocre.
You can see the streaky marks of the acrylic paint, why did she use acrylic?! You can get chalk paint and other stuff that would be a nice solid colour. This quality just looks like a generic highschoolers DIY project, it's not worth whatever the shipping costs.
Anyone here got experience with resin casting for fairy kei? I don't plan to sell my creations, because everyone and thier mother has a resin shop, I just want to make a few cute pieces of jewelry for myself and maybe as small gifts for friends. Is it doable in a college dorm? I've read the basics, but I'm worried about ventilation. I don't have a roommate so temporary weird smells isn't an issue
Considering how often we have threads about matching rooms to one's style, I don't wonder about anything anymore.
They accuse you of lying when claiming to have an mental illness, saying you only use it as fashion accessory (while they probably do it themself to get SJW brownie points).
are you asking why it isn't being used? probably has a pixie or something and realized that it wasn't appropriate for fairy kei. the point is that i think the shitty wig and glasses ruin it for me. cut off the head (maybe change the skirt, not a big fan of it) and you got a decent coord
Is anyone else getting sick of Tickled Shop? They sell scalped swimmer, qpot, and taobao items. The owner Moon-Dreams reblogs the posts pretending as though she wants to buy from the shop... her shop. I wish people would stop being re-sellers like that, the items are literally double the price. It's cheaper to do an order directly with a shopping service.
I don't like the fake glasses that much, if they were decorated it would have been better. But I think the fit just isn't flattering for her? I don't know, if she had just slightly curly shoulder length dark hair I think it would be cute. As of now, the skirt feels overpowering.
Also someone tagged pic related as fairy kei. What's with the big maid/seifuku = fairy kei thing lately in the tags?
I'm considering purchasing Chocomimi from online since apparently it's a fashion manga that has a lot of fairy kei-esc outfits. Anyone here have it? Is it worth the money?
It doesn't matter much as long as it isn't shiny.
End of Candye Syrup spam as I go to sleep, you can dig tru their Twitter for fairy kei yourself.
So I want to start wearing fairy kei, and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me where I can find some cute pastel clothes. Specifically, I'm looking for cute skirts that aren't super short miniskirts that barely cover your butt (which is most of what I've found on Taobao). Knee length or a little shorter would be fine. Shorts would also be good. I just don't want to be in danger of flashing everyone any time the wind slightly blows.
Source is http://sugary.cart.fc2.com/
Also, fairy kei these days is mostly shops that sell the handmade goods of various artists for a limited time instead of making own products, that's what both Tenten and Candye Syrup do. There are lots of overpriced Taobao resell shops like Qun.to (http://qun-to.shop-pro.jp/) too but they are still cheaper than brand so people flock to them like seagulls to fresh bread.
...or you use the dashboard slide view that appears when clicking a blog icon.
What's your height? And if your main concern is flashing people, you can just wera bloomers under your skirt.
I'm only 5'4, but I'm finding a lot of very tiny miniskirts. I'd rather have a skirt that covers me well. Those pumpkin pants in your pic really are cute; I'd really love something like that too. For now I bought a plain pastel pink skirt, which should work fine, I think. But I really want some more interesting things.
I probably should get some short bloomers just in case, though. Mine are pretty long, for old school lolita peeking bloomers.
I'm very excited to start wearing fairy kei, honestly.
i need more pastel pants/leggings suitable for winter. i don't like tights+skirt combo since i go for more of a boystyle look, but it's surprisingly hard to find ones that have that soft fairy kei aesthetic (and aren't super transparent when it comes to leggings). anyone have some basic suggestions?
I have seen plenty of pants that look good in very kei, it's not like pants didn't exist in 80s children's fashion which is still what fairy kei is based on.
> Also someone tagged pic related as fairy kei
> What's with the big maid/seifuku = fairy kei thing lately in the tags?
anon did you even try desu senpai
Pants can definitely work. I think so long as you keep 80s and pastel in mind, your pants should translate well. Also overalls work great in fairy.
So fairy kei has been my favorite fashion for a long time, but I fail to find anything good that could fit me (I'm ~size 16 US, 140 lbs). Is there any hope for me? I also would die for some cute pastel sneakers, but nothing goes up to US 9.
your best bet is pastel sweaters (kohls has some good ones rn). as far as brand goes, i think milklim's sweatshirts would fit you. i'm 5'5'' and ~130lbs and they're quite roomy on me.
if you can find pastel boots those would work well with some cute tights and legwarmers!
I'm so jealous of this to be honest...
Okay I'm jelly
This is adorable. Where did you get this from?
So I was the anon that talked about Fairy Kei not beind dead while writting about Candy Syrup and Tenten.
Apparently, "Fairy Kei" is indeed dead but as "outdated" term, the new one is Yumekawaii and even Spank! redesigned their style and shop concept in order to fit the modern version.
Oh wow, that's really cool anon.
I wonder where the words fairy kei came from then, if yumekawaii is newly coined and so well fits the fashion. Spank! changing up their style to better match the fluffy look is also interesting.
It's owner said in 2011:
"At first the fashion was called Spank! girls. Then just three months later fairy-kei was born. Some magazines said the pioneer of fairy-kei was Spank! but I don’t think so. For me Spank! girls and fairy-kei was very different. Fairy-kei includes a lot of different tastes. I think Zipper magazine coined “fairy-kei” and then a month later Cutie used the term and it spread from there."
So it was pretty much magazines inventing the term as originally it did look like fairies (pic related from mid 00's) but it evolved far beyond that.
It's interesting that Spank! had their separate style from fairy kei then, but the revamp of their store strongly represents what they had first though Spank! was going to look like.
Because they were the ones inventing the term but it doesn't change the fact that fairy kei doesn't look like fairy kei more, one could say fairy kei is now the "old-school" term.
Tbh you hardly get recent results searching fairy kei in japanese.
I speak Japanese, but thanks for the concern. When has Chloma's designer used the term uchuu-kei to describe his work? He cites technology and net culture as his inspiration, not outer space.
Even calling something "kei" doesn't automatically turn it into an established style, it's a simple descriptive suffix used everywhere in Japanese. Pic related, a search for "uchuu-kei" fashion. Basic galaxy print from 2012, how cutting-edge.
Anon, you'd be surprised by how many stores are selling the exact galaxy seifukus from stars-rainbow and many of their other seifuku designs. Just because it's ~glorious nippon land~ doesn't mean they don't have taobao reseller stores all over the place.
original anon, I thought uchuu kei was a fairy kei substyle, and if it isn't I'd like to try it in that direction. So if anyone has inspiration photos or links that would be amazing. Most "uchuu kei" I've seen on cgl/tumblr is not based on jfashion aesthetics.
Silly question but can I mix brightly colored neons and pastels in fairy kei? When I say neon I mean like >>8714260 ' s shoes. I want to say yes but I've honestly been so concerned. I own a pair of pink creepers that I'd love to wear somehow
I think bright pink can work well with pastels when coordinated tight. Spank! also uses some neons or brighter colors in their fashion on occasion, same with a lot of girls who do a sort of 6%dokidoki inspired look. Depending on the colors you're already using and what you're working with I don't see why not. An all pastel outfit with bright pink shoes might be off putting though.
I've been looking into Yumekawaii and it is a term that is appearing more often. It's not a distinct fashion though. I searched on different sites and normally pastel filters and cute anime girls pop up. It seems to have a "Meruhen/Fairy Tale" theme as opposed to retro 80s pastels. WEGO used the term for some of their products and likewise to Larme, the cut and the design of things triumphed over patterns and sparkles. There's a lot of baggy clothing as well. It does also cross over into Menhera, as people are tagging their outfits using both terms. I prefer it to Fairy Kei as it's a lot more modern and wearable in my eyes. But their isn't a reputable source like the Larme magazine for it to catch on in the West, lol.
But fairy kei doesn't exist anymore in the way it was intended to be and Fairy Kei itself never had an own magazine either while Yumekawaii got the Yumecawaii festival which is sponsored by Swankiss, Spank!, Nile Perch and few other brands.
Potentially embarrassing question: I love this MILK skirt, but every single time I put it on I just can't coord it for shit. Does it lean fairy kei to you? How would you guys coord it?
This should be fucking easy mode, so please forgive me. I feel like an idiot every time I pull it out of the drawer, get excited for it, and drop it back in.
Thanks so much, that helps me a load! Fitted up top is better, right? I tried this with a chunky sweater and it just looked a bit weird. Maybe too long and not enough volume to give that cute peeking out effect.
That's an adorable skirt anon. For fairy kei, you mention pairing it with an oversized sweater and having it look weird. Maybe you can try tucking in the sweaterright at the pink waistband of the skirt to get the cutesy layering effect? If it's a cardigan/jacket, you can go with a fitted top under the loose outer.
I'll try posting some inspo with no tutu coords. Also offtopic, but where did you get those blankets? Very cute.
I just bought this skirt from milklim in two color ways (black and lavender). I couldn't resist: it has pockets!
Any suggestions for a top or tights to pair with this?
Would it be cool if I posted some decora here, or should I make a seperate thread?
Just so you guys know, the 6% doki doki site is down in down english and japanese.
On that note, does anyone know any stores that carry them?
