Among the things i liked there was the fact it wasnt a perfectly happy love story, shinji keeps getting shit on by fate, it gets depressing, and the ending is bittersweet as it is implied that EoE shinji and asuka also lost their memories. A lot of characters were exagerated, but i think it feels much more like eva than the many "happy universes" stories (including the kids-tier official spinoffs). I cant really enjoy anything evangelion-related without some drama on it.

I know I'm late to the party but in all honesty I think ShinjixAsuka should stay as OTP. They're just such toxic fucked up losers that they deserve each other. Besides the whole show is basically about overcoming your fears and opening up to people, if they can learn to do that with each other they might have hope yet. I guess I found that to be my conciliatory thought at the end of the movie, I figured maybe they'll be alright if they learned anything from the past year.

I see your point, but I can't agree with it at all. You mean sad people must necessarily stick with sad people, but there's hope that they can find someone better. They're not star-crossed lovers, and if being together is so hurtful, they can just go separate ways and find more suitable and stable partners.

Evangelion (and especially EoE) is certainly a story about hope, but mainly about not giving up living. That has nothing to do with romance or shipping.
