I've never really paid attention to these kinds of polls but she seems to really popular in recent ones, maybe she just gained popularity over time if she wasn't as much back in the 90s.

Pic related is from 2015. I think it's really worth noting how almost all the other characters are either from recent stuff or have recent adaptations of their source material when the last Eva thing was 3.0 way back in 2012, which I doubt anything good for her popularity. This applies to the other NGE characters you can see in the image too of course, it's a testament to them all that they have such staying power.

She's the most popular original EVA character, and was the most popular Evangelion character for some time.

This is DESPITE Anno's efforts to the opposite. But then again, you're just a troll who's found a poll where Rei isn't #1 and thought it'd annoy us, but no anon, it only show show pathetic you are. Rei is a popular character but will obviously never be #1 in all polls. What you should note that she is the #1 Eva character.

You can only vote for the EVA characters if there's some media related to them coming out. Otherwise, they are unable to be selected. The release of the EVA blu-rays is what made the EVA characters appear.

Moreover, notice that every character except Rei fell in the ranking. That's staying power that can't be bought, like with Asuka.

Several reasons. Like you said, Anno didn't write Rei alone. There was pressure from peers and from the TV network for Anno to finish the story, and finish it well. At this point Anno didn't have complete power like he does today. He was forced to finish the series, and his original plan was to go on live TV and apologize for failing to provide a proper ending for the original.

Another reason is that Anno hated Rei because she was more popular than Asuka. That only happened after he had written most of the story and there was no way back. Anno is an anime otaku who acts just like the cliched waifufag does when it comes to favorite characters.

So it's when he remakes Evangelion that he takes out his butthurt on Rei and her fans, something he enjoys more than writing his own favorite characters. He's a shitty guy.

There's no need to spread things that have no source or likely explanation coming from the show. For submissive otaku sex fantasies, Asuka is the epitome of them through e.g the masturbation scene where Shinji ejaculates over a motionless Asuka, much like an otaku treats Asuka figures.

I think it's simpler, he's just an otaku. His pride was hurt by seeing Rei popular and Asuka less popular. If he truly meant that Rei was weak, and that this was a problem, then making Rei weaker in subsequent spinoffs is the wrong way to go. No, Anno knows Rei is strong. He knows the original Rei is a far stronger character than Asuka, which is why he keeps changing the canon to fit his desired view.

Rei II was harmed when Unit - 00 when berserk remember? It was where Gendo ran down to free her from the ejected plug and burned his hands. As for when II (and by extension III) was born is an interesting question, we're told that the clones in the Reiquarium are for the dummy plug system, but they're also said to be "parts for Rei" this probably means that when Rei dies her soul simply makes its way to one of these clones. But I wonder when these shells were made, it could be that they were made as a batch all at once along with her original body or later on, perhaps starting after the death of Rei I. It's shown that they're able to have the bodies age far faster than normal by virtue of of the original Rei being made after the death of Yui, when Shinji was a toddler but by the time of NGE she's roughly the same age as him and Asuka. So maybe they were made over time and all aged up to match the age of Rei's current body and would remain in sync.

I believe he did care about Rei enough to make her a worthy NGE character, but she became more popular than Asuka and Evangilion itself, is rumored to be the reason behin Eva's phenomenal popularity.

It doesn't work that way. Why would Rei want to steal some posters? Of herself, even? The question doesn't work without introducing the situation into NGE and adding a reason for it to exist. In which case, if some government has posters of her, then I don't think Rei would be against someone stealing them.

The truth is that Rei doesn't care very much about unimportant, trivial stuff like this. No one is getting hurt, so Rei would not mind.

Rei can also sympathize with protecting or standing up for something she likes or respects, and Shinji was unfairly slapped. So if some Rei fans who admire and love Rei wants to get hold of some posters, and come up with a scheme to do so by infiltrating a building, then more power to them.

Yeah, they forced him into the other movies as well. Not even Asuka gets a mention in 1.11. But it's only in 3.33 where he gets featured for more than a few short scenes, and only in 3.33 where there are massive plot changes to accomodate the character.

The Rebuilds could have been great if Anno had taken the job seriously.

3.33 was full of forced drama, almost everyone was out of character. The film's biggest faults were probably due to time constraints not a singular character. The goal of the film seemed to be making Shinji suffer as much as possible so that he had a reason to consider instrumentality.
Anno never had a high opinion of his work, especially Eva. He even said his wife's manga series was better than Evangelion.

I can see that you acknowledge that 3.33 does not make much sense, but I also see that you censor the reason for it. You speak of time constraints, of making Shinji suffer, to making him consider instrumentality, but all of these are elements or problems that come to exist precisely because of a singular character: Kaworu.

The truth is that we would never have time for Kaworu in an Evangelion story, we'd never have time for this arc. At most it could be part of the fourth movie, shortly as part of the intro, but never a full quarter of the whole story as it has been now. Even moreso if you add the tidbits from 2.22 and 1.11. God knows what 3.0+1.0 will bring, the only thing that is for certain is that Anno will never have enough integrity or self-insight to make up for what he's done to the story and Rei in particular.

Shinji isn't made to suffer for him to consider instrumentality, the poor kid does not even know what it is. Rei is not kept out of the series, likened to Yui and made subject to being simply a mother-figure just to make Shinji consider instrumentality - no, that is done because it will ruin Rei's character and please Kaworu and Asuka fans the most. Understanding 3.33 and indeed, Khara's new Evangelion means understanding that they are the destructive fan fantasies of Asuka and Kaworu fans throughout the years. Turn back the clock. Visit the archives of evageeks, 4chan, and behold all the so-called "fans" who desired the destruction of Rei's character in order to promote Asuka's and others.

Anno is an otaku himself. He harbors the same feelings, and he is slimy enough to take advantage of the otaku sentiments he sees posted every single day on 2ch and various blogs, not to mention what he himself hears from EVA fans.

You can say what you want about Anno and him "not caring", the truth is that he put an extreme amount of effort into 3.33, but not in the areas it's followers think.

As for what evageeks said or says, it pretty clear that site is full of Asuka fans that are more interested in fulfilling their personal fantasies rather than paying attention to the actual storyline.
I recall an interview in which Anno stated that after episode 6 of NGE, he had no idea of what to do with her character. He felt that with her smile Rei was done with her development. After episode 6 Rei didn't show up much for while, because Anno felt he had written himself to a dead end. In 2.22, Rei received a lot of screen time which allowed her character to be shown in a way not present in the original.
Rei doesn't bother to get close to others because she sees herself as a replaceable object. That's probably why Anno dislikes her fanbase as many of them see her as a perfect wife rather than a lonely person.

Not like Rei at all. Kaworu's character makes up less than 4% of the original Evangelion, and this is being generous. Rei is there nearly 100% of the time since the beginning. In the Rebuilds, bumping this up more (more than 25%) means the story, the characters and it's quality is forfeit.

It was pure pandering because in NGE, the character is introduced and used better, and is a better character. Giving Kaworu more screentime did not make for a better story, it did not make Kaworu a better character, it only did one thing: pander to Kaworu fans. The same Kaworu fans do not seem to care that Rei was to be murdered in the process, instead they embrace it and try to make it not seem important, like you are now.

There is a difference between being nurturing and therefore motherly, and being equated with someone's mother. The first one is a nice trait to have and and a compliment, but the second is what Asuka and Kaworu fans label Rei as to defend their own favorite pairings in the story. In the Rebuilds, Rei is now a clone of Yui, is juxtaposed on top of Yui, is now trapped inside EVA01 like Yui, and even loses her surname. Yui Ikari became Yui Ayanami in the Rebuild series.

The increased focus on tying Rei together with Yui while at the same time not allowing Rei to have any agency at all, is the perfect gift to shippers and people who hate Rei because it denies Rei's character while fueling their hatred towards Rei, as well as validating their own ships. Rei's characters was ruined to satisfy Kaworu and Asuka fans. The fact that you will deny this despite the above facts is in itself proof that it's true, since it's such a disgusting thing to do that you won't admit to it. But it is true.

We've all seen this, and we've all understood how false Anno is being in this interview. There are other interviews which explain how Anno worked hard to define Rei's character and experiment with original writing methods like gathering poems and art by schizophrenics in order to understand them better, to write Rei. At best, the comment he makes only refers to what he thought for one single scene. It's obvious from Rei's paranormal appearances in ep 1 and other mystery that she was destined for more than a smile. Rei was destined for goodhood in NGE, and that happened as part of the canon.

Anno only says he thought it was finished because he hates Rei, due to her popularity. He is frustrated and jumps to the first negative he can say about her in the interview.

So clearly people who use that interview as "evidence" that Rei isn't more than a smile are wrong. They are equally desperate to deny what happened in the series. The story continues for 20 more episodes, with Rei developing and doing some scary, disturbing things, not to mention brave and uplifting. EoE is a spectacle to behold, and Rei's development in the series is an extremely important cornerstone to the development of the story here. Misato, Asuka etc... have character arcs that make no real difference.

Anno, and Kaworu/Asuka fans who hate Rei will say anything even if it doesn't make sense about the original story in order to further their own fandom. This is why Anno is so negative towards Rei, this is why he dislikes Rei and the fans. I see you write this:

The only thing that happened to Asuka so far have meant giving her super strength and eternal youth. How can you rationalize this as anything else but extreme favoritism, while Rei is the constant target of attack?

Anno is a complete otaku. He sees Asuka, Kaworu as his "perfect wives", which is why he copied parts of their character from his favorite characters and even doujins he liked. People he knew, even. He wants people to love these "perfect wives", not the character he worked hard on and surprised him with her popularity.

Get this Kaworu fan: The injustice IS real, and you're part of it every time you deny.

Rei played an important in Evangelion, but it's not fair to say Asuka, Misato, or any other characters' didn't matter. Asuka's back story and character is still one of the most memorable aspects of the series and Misato's past provided important information regarding second impact.

You are a shipper yourself, I see, although that was given since you're a Kaworufag. The facts are that you obsess over the fact that Rei is supposed to be this and that person, instead of looking at the character for what it is. There is for a fact, no romantic get together for any of the characters. Shinji chokes Asuka in the end and doesn't respond to her advances. Kaworu betrays Shinji and then fails to destroy mankind, and dies. Misato kisses Shinji, but she did it since she knew she'd die. Rei becomes an ancient alien and ceases to exist on the physical plane. There is no lovey dovey end or consummation of any relationships, only various forms of attraction borne out of desperation. This is Evangelion, it is not about shipping per se. It has relationships, but not de facto couples concerning Shinji.

Shippers, which include you, therefore hate Rei because in this shipless void known as Evangelion she's a rival due to her popularity. Shippers do not need evidence of romance or anything in order to ship, and more popularity means more shipping. It's purely a personal community exercise, an answer to the hypothetical question "would they fit?". Often in answering this question as honestly as possible we are forced to accept that Asuka is unable to take care of anyone and Kaworu is useless as a partner. Which is good, because this is how Evangelion works, it's not made for you to "ship". This pisses you off, and makes you hate other characters, like you're doing here today.

No, Rebuild ruined these characters because it had one focus in mind, catering to Kaworu and Asuka fanboys and shippers. Rei's character is in fact the only one suffering, the rest are only poorly written. You will deny this as you have the other facts I'm sure. It's in your nature as a shipper kaworufag, to refuse to see reality and regurgitate your headcanon.

All the characters are worse than their NGE counterparts by far, but only Rei is being humiliated and represented as something objectively lesser than she was in NGE.
