So I'm a bit new to this whole anime thing but I had a question for any oldfags, does anime only update regularly (like western cartoons) if its popular/profitable? Recently I got into musume and onii ai, and I also watch Attack on titan and naruto (yes I know, filthy casual), but musume last aired a year ago and there aren't any plans so far for a second season, onii ai on the other hand last aired in 2012, and there aren't any plans for a new season still, yet Naruto has been going strong for years, and AoT (massively popular mainstream anime that converted me) is taking its sweet time with that next season.
TL;DR: Explain anime release schedules

Most anime tends to be released in self-contained seasons where between 26 episodes (a full season) and 13 episodes (a half season) are made. The season usually takes place over the course of an actual season like winter. I don't know about anime like Naruto and Attack on Titan might have something to do with it being shonen. I'm sure there's more to it but that's what I know about it.
