I'd say Rei it's an inward artist and outward healer.

We all get the sense she'd be artsy even though we never see her do anything like that in the show; so it's mostly because of her reading, her monologue and a few lines that let you see she has a poetic bent underneath her rational demeanor... On the other hand the few times when she's the one seeking out others it's not for her own benefit but theirs, we see that with Shinji, Gendo, Asuka even Touji...

So that's how I see it; she'd be the kind of person that would write or paint or sing or whatever, not to broadcast it to the world but just for her personal enjoyment. On the other hand she would definitely seek to help or be a comfort for others. So I think a help channel would be more likely than a artsy one.

Also since I'm among the population that's responsive to ASMR I love the idea that she would do something like that.

This came to mind for me, too! I guess it follows, because Rei/Lilith is, y'know, literally mother nature.

Sometimes I feel a bit strange loving her because of this. Is it kind of like how religious people love God? Or is it like a romantic love between two people? Or is it a bit of both? Anno likely never had any intention of making a fourth movie to begin with. From his perspective, 3.33 is the perfect way to end the story, or at least good enough of an ending that he won't need to make the fourth.

It strongly glorifies Asuka (and Kaworu, alot) and leaves the impression of them as characters to cheer on and pay attention to.

Then of course, it ravages and insults Rei's character and leaves it with no way forward.

Once Anno did that, it's in his interest to keep up that "status quo" for as long as possible. For that reason, any 4.44 is forfeit as it'd only be more of the same toxic otaku nonsense.

The chances for some sort of "redemption" in Anno is practically non-existing.

Did you guys enjoy it before the 3.0? I liked how cute and comfy Rei was in 2.0, it was nice seeing her happy for a relatively extended point of time. 3.0 was shit and I don't expect 4.0 to be any better, but I still hold out a naive amount of hope that she may get a somewhat happy ending

Like you say, seeing Rei be happy for an extended period of time was nice, but ultimately the character deserves to be more substantive than that.

In my book Pokanami is a mixed bag, I get why it's liked but also why it has its detractors. It had a few problems but for me, where 2.22 left her off was good enough for a mid story point.

1.11 showed mostly the classic Rei we all know and love, while 2.22 showed a bit more explicitly than NGE what Rei's life was during the interim period between Asuka's arrival and when shit hits the fan. That's a plus, but it erred on being too sugary which is a minus.

But that could be forgiven when they still had two other movies to go on which is where Rei would have shone. but that time has passed so all we got was 1.11's rehash, 2.22's moe-indulgence, 3.33's impostor and 4.44's dead end.

But 2.22 had moments like the aquarium scene that fooled you into thinking that the full glory of Rei was still there and yet to come.

With a single line she acknowledged the precariousness of her situation beyond the idyllic bubble she was caught at the moment.

Even the cooking subplot has a couple things that can be salvaged. It started as an act of reciprocity, and like I said in some other post, when Rei approaches others is not for her benefit but for theirs that applies here, her regret at the end of the movie wasn't 'I'm sorry we didn't have dinner together' it was 'sorry you and your father still don't get along'. It took on dumb love triangle overtones when Asuka got involved, but from Rei's perspective it was about healing a bond, not something for her.

I was enjoying the Rebuilds and hoping for the best as far as the Rebuilds went. I'd seen so many poor quality spinoffs by then and hated them for their quality and poor treatment of Rei.

I thought the Rebuilds would be different since Anno was working on it, but it turned out that the Rebuilds were even worse. The changes he's done in the first two movies could passably and potentially become great in future additions, however when 3.0 reared it's ugly head it turned out that it would not be the case as Anno had completely succumbed to his own otaku obsessiveness.

What we know for sure is that Eva's community is somewhat of a conflict zone, something the red incursion ITT is a rather mild example of. There's no shortage of Rei-haters who pose as Rei fans either.

So it's either people lying about their previous opinion (despicable), or they are Rei-haters.

This is a good story and all, and something that seems normal for a Rei fan, but here's where your story starts breaking apart:

You mentioned 2.0, but not 3.0.

Because in 2.0 as with 1.0, we've got the initial developments and indeed Rei crafting her own identity. It's only in 3.0 where the hammer hits with the Yui-parallels - 2.0 has one superposition of Yui's face on Rei's, and that's a completely understandable thing considering we're literally getting "Gendo-vision". This infers no statement about Rei's person, but only what Gendo sees.

Yet Rebuild will go extremely far in renaming Yui to Ayanami, putting Rei in the exact same spot as Yui (EVA01), and loudly declaring Rei a clone of Yui.

In fact, what your'e saying right now with this in mind is best known as a faked opinion only uttered by Rei-haters, in particular Kaworu fans. So tell me, do you think it goes by unnoticed?

I'm the poster from >>2713773 So I have to say something since I'm one of the people you describe as historical revisionists. Unlike the other guy that says he thought Rebuild would be crap from the start, I did 'revise' my opinion on on 1.11 & 2.22 and I acknowledge it. I don't think there's anything disingenuous or Rei-hating about that because they're an ongoing thing so each installment does change the perception of the previous ones.

For starters, even back then people saw 1.11 as a retread/rehash, but was received positively because of the animation, the score and the small changes that were enough to keep everyone happy since it was seen as a reintroduction and setup so you couldn't as for much more.

2.22 came along and it struck a good balance between familiar and unfamiliar leaving you in uncharted waters by the very end, but I remember even back then some complaints about how it was structured and about shinji being too TTGL and not enough EVA.

But most were happy because it did seem like Rei would be explored further in 3.33 and there would be new situations and more character development (with them being locked up and all), so it did appease the early rumblings about how that' what was missing from the first two since you could say, it's the latter half of the show when things really get interesting so it will be the same thing with Rebuild.

But then 3.33 came along, and 2.22 turned out to be a false promise, we didn't get much more to chew on about Rei or most other characters either, it all got got lesser than it was, and if from those eyes you go back and look at 1.11 and 2.22 in general or Poka-Rei in particular as the best and the most Rebuild offered you, then you can't help but say 'fuck that' it was acceptable when it was the build up for something, but now that we know it wasn't I don't think it's dishonest to change opinions on what came before.

Oh yeah, we're on a similar page here, totally. The crucial difference is 'revising' your opinion by claiming it was always your opinion, without admitting that it changed. What makes you and I differ from those people is this, and because it's such an important and fundamental stance it makes it likely that they are cover Kaworu/Asukafags who held that sort of opinoin to begin with. In particular the "omg poka-poka destroyed everything!!11one!" rhetoric is a favorite amongst those people.

You just have to take the bull by the horns, and it'll scamper away just like this other guy did.

I've changed my opinion on not just the Rebuilds but the franchise as well. However, I'm not one to deny that I once was very hopeful, and that if indeed 3.33 had been a serious movie, it could have been great.
