It's Eva, the character's happiness is not a concern for the creators, especially Rei's.
The line builds a character contrast with Asuka: While she could get pregnant but wishes she couldn't, Rei then could be a character that wishes she could be a mother but can't.
And on top of that, there's the dramatic irony that a character representing motherhood by her connection to both Yui & Lilith turns out to be barren.
They're not new arguments and nothing can really be settled in Eva but they make sense from my perspective.

In a way it's a good thing you're so self critical because it's made you improve quite a bit. Rei was in my dream last night.

We both went to the same school and I jokingly handed her a knife and told her to kill a specific student. She didn't get that I was joking and actually killed him.

I was freaking out because I thought I was going to be held responsible for that guy's death.

Then Rei resorted to a life of crime by climbing around apartment buildings naked looking for open windows so she could steel everything. Also her chest became a hairy man's chest while somehow keeping the exact same proportions as before.

The real tragedy of the dream was that I found an audio book of a story by James Joyce that doesn't exist in real life. I remember listening to it and it being brilliant, but nothing more. I can't even remember the title.

Anyone else ever have a dream with Rei in it?

I don't think so at all, your point is just because she's a bit socially awkward. There are loads of allusions to her having motherly characteristics (let alone the whole Lilith thing and her literally having the soul of mother nature), and she talks about her deep 'bond' with all people. To me she would be really loving, nurturing and fiercely protective.

That's a good point. I'm the same only I was 15. I like to think she aged with me, and I definitely like older depictions of Rei a lot more.

It is always strange re-watching NGE though, and feeling the same feelings now that I'm 23 but onscreen Rei is still a kid. It feels uncomfortable and like I'm going to be arrested and put in jail.

I don't see any evidence of extraordinary intelligence in Evangelion as far as Asuka is concerned, rather the opposite considering her consistently anti-intellectual nature of dealing with things.

If you watch NGE(1995), you'll be shocked to find that Asuka is a doll, not Rei. This is why Asuka breaks into a will-less puddle once her masters (NERV) take away her strings, the EVA. It's why Asuka has flashbacks about people calling her and her mother dolls, and its why Asuka's mind-reveal mentions dolls while Rei's does not.

Looking at it rationally instead of the "MEME" way Asuka fans often do, we actually see that Rei remains independent throughout the entire series, she lives alone, makes her choices alone, and disproves the idea that she's absolutely loyal and without will by soundly defying and defeating Gendo, the master of NERV.

So when Rei loses her EVA and thus her role as an EVA-pilot, Rei does not grieve or break down, rather she keeps her cool because Rei knows she is more than "just NERV's Pilot". Alas, Asuka does not so like a doll without strings, she collapses into a bathtub.

Anno likes Asuka for the same reason you do, his dick.

Well certain people do have special tastes, some like midgets, some like amputee, some like corpses, some like Asuka.

But that isn't healthy or common.

I think Asuka is a quality and well-written character, but not a good person. She's a good picture of a completely fucked up human being who is one's own worst enemy, and is pretty much antagonist for every one making everyone's life worse. Doesn't sound like the best girl to me. The best girl has a kind heart cares about everyone and tries to help people around her.
Most people like Asuka for the red color and action scenes, but if you actually like her for what she is, well that's you, let's say she's a better girl just for you and a few ones like you.
