What is the best way to hedge a small portfolio (~$12k) against a large market downturn? Investopedia and articles about hedging always assume that you have a portfolio of $100k or more.

You want to group things which, essentially, move in opposition to each other, but which both move up in price, over a certain period of time.
So if you wanted to hedge against a downturn, you'll want to group a security which tends to perform worse in a bear market, with a security which performs better in a bear market.
But you want securities which have both shown to be going up (on average), over time.

Doesn't necessarily have to be grouping of securities, could also use derivatives.
Nothing really. Stock fundamentals are weak. Interest rates can only increase so bonds are out. USD is plummeting. Gold is manipulated. Real estate is in a bubble.
