It's supposed to take that long. It is much more advisable to keep your steem power though, as they get a crazy interest while Steem will permanenty get diluted and lose in value

You need power to get started anyway, no point in powering down.
Steem is the most echo chamber of all social networks I've ever been on and I suppose only the top 50 users can make a living off of it. I know people who joined the same time I did and they can make 20$ a week with just programming posts (for which they would receive 0 on other platforms), but you must really like writing. And the place is also bot infested like no other site.

it's a good idea but the system can clearly be gamed. like you can post something on there and get $0.00 and some dude will say "nice post" and get $0.05 and then the top rewarded post will be like someone's vacation pictures.
