Aren't altcoins nothing but gambling?

It's like gambling but with much less risk (if you're not stupid)
Everything is a gamble. Even you posting that frog runs the risk of someone calling you a faggot frog poster. The question is if the risk of looking like a faggot frog poster is worth the potential reward of posting a gay frog in a cowboy hat. See what I am saying?

No, they are essentially penny stocks that have some block-chain component.
Given that blockchain is an amazing and the potential upside from sub $1 investments is enormous, it's a pretty good space to bury some investment money that you can afford to lose.

OP, altcoins are typically investment opportunities where the investment you're making is in a tech company that is developing/using shared ledger technology. Shared ledgers are important because they significantly reduce market friction. You can think of friction as any impediment to the even exchange of value. Eliminating friction would mean any two entities could exchange assets without losing value due to intermediaries, security compliance, taxes, and regulations.
Folks on /biz/ putting all their money into shitcoins and getting huge gains due to market fluctuations ARE gambling, but it is also a speculative market with lots of new players competing in the same areas which adds to its volatility. This tech is relatively new, so the days of 100-1000% gains will not be around forever. Choosing an altcoin with good, active development teams, solid concepts and realistic roadmaps will probably result in an amazing profit in the next few years due to the applicability and practicality of blockchain tech.

yes. Even better, you can invest in coins that make profit off of gambling

Years. My estimate would be 2-3, which is when you'll see an exchange much more like the stock market intended for raising funds as well as global currencies which will benefit from more stability.
Bitcoin has been around since 2008. ETH improved on the bitcoin blockchain and now many altcoins are based on its platform, which is one of the reasons why its value continues to go up. Many more mature altcoins will be around for many years to come because they successfully found their niche, but their values will fluctuate less. Some will still innovate and explode the way you see now, especially as people move into the sector and think if new ways to use the tech and improve it (and find weaknesses/flaws). Think of the dotcom bubble. The web continues to be a platform for people to generate value. Blockchain can do the same (and will likely see a similar bubble-burst eventually).
