yeah pretty much,
from my memory the fork happened because there was a large eth hack, so people got together and decided to roll back the ledgers as if the theft/breach never happened.

Of course this upset many people, because this introduced a moral hazard now and basically rewarded people who made poor choices, so some people decided to fork.

The whole inherent value in ethereum (simplistically) is
-hashpower
-number of dApps on the network
EthClassic has neither of those in abundance. Also, it's used my miners only for the purpose to get money on a lower difficulty (i.e. mine eth classic, then sell it for real Ether when it randomly PnD's or whatever).
