Ethereum pretends to be about dApps when it's really a better Bitcoin. There is a lot of value in a better Bitcoin without banker funding or chinese mining cartels.

You kinda answered your questiom yourself. People spend ETH when they need a decentralized, trustless solution. No servers or 3rd party for verification required (once there is a solution for the centralized oracles issue).

You might as well ask: why do people use cryptocurrency for payments when there is paypal and it's cheaper!?

It is a widespread misinformation that blockchain technology is cheaper than old fashioned alternatives
