What are the best options to break out of the 9-5 these days? I recently graduated and started working at a finance company as a software engineer in Chicago. The pay is good but I feel like a peon. I'm considering either starting a business or a consulting firm.

You won't be able to escape the 9 to 5 right now, and you shouldn't. Hang with your coworkers, make friends, and learn how a business works while you build your network. Then, find a few people in your network after a few years, who are good at what they do and are adventurous, and go into business for yourself. It could be real estate, it could be making a better toilet paper, whatever is interesting and more importantly something you're experienced in. The main thing I think hampers people when they try to leave the rat race is too small of network. I would say make friends and contacts and learn how the world works while you are young and have the energy, and then build yourself up when the time is right and you have the base of experience and contacts to put to good use.

t. Someone who is trying to do exactly this.

Yeah, I think having a good network of dependable people is important for trying to start something new in business. I think it's definitely an area I can work on. What area of business are you considering getting into?

Probably real estate. I like it and I work in mortgages, so every day feels like training for the future. Plus it's an industry that I feel is possible for people to do their own thing easily. If I had experience in like say the defense industry, I'd go the consulting route, because starting your own defense company would be very very difficult.

>this is what I'm doing so you should too

Don't listen to this fucker OP, learn your way. Trial by fire. Make some savings, and then stop being a pussy.

Nah, I mean yes op can do that, but I've thought about it, and if the goal is to reduce the amount of luck you need to become independently wealthy, my plan seems very optimized. Sure, OP could get lucky making a shitty app that gets bought by Google, but shots in the dark are not plans. By building a network, and gaining experience, you reduce the amount of luck you need to make it.

But whatever bucket crab. Keep on buying lotto tickets and maybe you'll be rich one day.
