If I want to invest in a bunch of altcoins, what's the best way to do it with minimum fees?
I used to use coinbase, but got tired of the high fees and wait times for coins to be deposited in your account, so I signed up for Gemini. Pretty good so far, but it's only BTC and ETH.
Should I just buy BTC -> Bittrex (or any other exchange for that matter) -> alts? Would using ETH be better? Or is there any utility in buying LTC on coinbase and using that, for >lower fees/faster tx's?
eth -> bittrex -> alts
eth actually has liquidity in pairs so no need for high fees or double conversion (with LTC)

I don't understand any of what you just said. Explain for a noob?
But yeah, I assumed ETH would be better overall. I do want to spend of a small chunk on BTC though just to hodl.

basically if you transfer ltc you get low fees but on any exchange you have to go through btc then alt, since there are no trading pairs with ltc. but with eth you still get low fees and fast transaction but no need to convert into btc for most alts since you can buy with ethereum.

Alrighty, makes sense. ETH it is then. Hope it doesn't tank any further
