Dollar getting wrecked up the ass, boyos. Time to get in on those precious metal dips. If data keeps coming like this over the next few months leading to December, the Fed is going to be hard pressed to raise rates. Bad for the dollar, good for the metals.

The New York Times reported Monday that one day trader managed to turn $500,000 into $12 million over five years by shorting a leveraged VIX exchange-traded fund like the ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures (UVXY).

The story combined with the fact that the CBOE Volatility Index or the VIX has been at historic lows for most of this year might make shorting VIX ETFs an enticing investment strategy, but it's very, very difficult to get it right. Macro Risk Advisors derivatives strategist Pravit Chintawongvanich crunched the numbers and confirmed that it is indeed possible for a simple short strategy to achieve those returns, but requires an iron stomach. In a note published today, he wrote:

Just for kicks, we wanted to see if it would really be possible for someone trading a simple strategy of shorting UVXY (with extremely high leverage) could have achieved these returns over the past 5 years, ignoring the borrow cost on UVXY shares. We are NOT in any way recommending this strategy, this is purely for illustrative purposes (and laughs)! The exact details of the rules are unimportant (since we aren’t pitching this as a viable strategy) – we simply simulated always shorting UVXY with a certain % of one’s money and shorting more when the VIX spiked. The point is that yes, it was possible, but only by taking extreme amounts of leverage and suffering multiple high (60%+) drawdowns. Also, notice how most of the money was made in the past year!
Most importantly, this strategy would not have survived 2008 and in fact it was mostly wiped out long before 2008 even happened. Even looking at 2011, we can see that the strategy would have suffered a 90%+ drawdown. This shows how the past 5 years have been a uniquely good time for shorting volatility, causing these strategies to have a misleadingly high Sharpe ratio. But that high Sharpe conceals the actual danger of running a negative convexity strategy with excessively high leverage.

Warning to UVXY lads- that shit is a slow, painful death. I lost a lot on it during election season last year, even more when the market shot up after Trump won. Sadly I was betting on his win but didnt realize it would tank volatility.

Depends what you want to do. Do you want to day-trade? Or do you want to hold and collect dividends?

Want to day trade? If you are using RobinHood, I'd suggest somewhere you can get real-time market data. http://www.level2stockquotes.com/ has very close to real time market data for free (maybe 5 second delay). Usually you have to pay for this, otherwise the data you can find (like yahoo finance for example) is delayed by 15 minutes or more. https://www.tradingview.com has a very simplified stock screener package for free that's pretty good. You can use this to find things that you might be able to profit off of by buying low, and flipping it at a higher price to make some money.

If you want dividends, you would want to look for large companies (Like Ford or General Electric) to invest in. Many dividends are paid quarterly, but you could move money from stock to stock to capitalize on dividends alone, as dividend payment dates are different from company to company.

You could ride news as well. For example, AMD is a meme here, but with new product launches, AMD has risen to around the $15 mark before falling off. That would be almost $2 per share profit at it's current price of $13.25.

For just starting out though, I'd use http://www.investopedia.com/ for terms and concepts that you don't understand or haven't heard of. It has simple things covered (like how a market works) to complex macro-economic things (how a currency pairing, like CAD:USD, fluctuates over a period of time and it's contributing factors).

I'd also go to Youtube and find examples from "gurus". Some of these "gurus" make their living just trading stocks. And by living, I mean making more than $250,000 a year. They usually have good advice and you can learn the basics and develop your own strategy to fit your level of comfort.

One last thing... If you do decide to trade more volatile penny stocks, I'd recommend not holding them overnight or over the weekend. A lot of these will move outside of normal trading hours. You generally won't be able to trade them after hours or in pre-market, and you could get burned pretty badly. Large-cap stocks (Like Ford or Apple) are good for a longer term hold.

No problem! After you get experience and capital trading stocks; I'd suggest commodities, ForEx or bonds/bond derivatives for better gains. I've seen some people make loads of cash trading things like cotton futures.

There was even a guy that made $5,000,000 a week as a floor trader at the NYBOT trading coffee. He had a heart attack and died from the stress of being a floor trader, but 5 million a week.

One thing I'd like to try is the Eurodollar futures contract. Each contract is worth a $1,000,000 and a one point movement is $25,000. This basically determines the 90-day overnight interest rate for USD deposits in overseas banks.
