Alpha is extremely tough to extract from commodities markets OP. It's requires very sophisticated strategies, and is extremely to predict correctly due to the number of market participants that engage in these markets. For example, oil is extremely difficult to predict since the political underpinnings of OPEC are difficult to predict, and events that lead to large shifts in gasoline usage for households (such as an abnormally cold winter causing more fuel for heating) are very difficult to predict.
Fuck off bomer we need all the space we can get for crypto threads

Kys, I've seen sugar increase 300% within the course of 6 months, while at the same time I've seen cryptos go from a few dollars to 0

Only cryptos you've seen hit 0 are total shit projects
in the past six months the growth of cryptos have been insane. many, many, many projects have 10-30x in that time frame..even if you just had all your money in bitcoin it would be over 4x now

Any interesting thoughts about agricultural commodities specifically?

Vastly more fail then thrive. Also, bitcoin did not go up 4x in 6 months, so get your head out of your ass. It went up like 2x, lower than sugar's 3x

There are a couple ways to earn profits in agricultural commodities. Since many of these perish (such as beed, pork bellies, or oranges) fairly quickly, large profits can be earned through good logistics (if you can purchase a large enough volume of an agricultural commodity and store it at a cheaper price than other traders through better logistics and operations, you can earn arbitrage profits). Another way to make money would be to test to soil quality of the top 30 coffee bean farms, and use that to try and predict this year's yield.
For individual investors, commodities aren't too useful in the portfolio, unless you want to purely speculate on a single commodity. Also, it's difficult to buy a commodity, besides through ETF, which probably charge a large fee for things other than gold or silver

Dead af. Market is in oversupplied mode. Need either droughts world wide to make ag markets great again or government intervention.
Don't fuck with ag. It's a place where many are losing jobs. Stick with crypto.
